An absolute gem

Dark Orchard CL is a 2.5 acre off grid CL site located on the England/Wales border. Divided by the Dulas Brook, Dark Orchard CL sits on the English side of the border in Herefordshire whilst the town of Hay-on-Wye sits in Powys, Wales. Dark Orchard CL is situated just meters from the River Wye and a few minutes stroll from the iconic town of Hay-on-Wye (Hay). Often referred to as the town of books and famous for its literary festival, Hay is home to over 20 bookshops and is surrounded by natural beauty for hikes, biking or paddling on the river. You'll also find a vibrant market containing local fresh produce, arts, crafts, and antiques every Thursday in Memorial Square. Dark Orchard was immaculately kept during our visit and we had the opportunity to meet the lovely Pete 'The greet' who had a wicked sense of humour and lots of useful information about the area. We also managed to meet the owners Lynda and Chris on our last morning who were extremely personable and helpful. Lynda and Chris had a last minute family event on the weekend we visited but told us they are often on and around the site to meet guests and answer any queries on the area. Lovely site

Was only able to stay one night due to availability & I can see why, lovely site, well kept, spacious & friendly owners with a dad who knew everything about the area, short walk into town, we wish we could have stayed longer, will definitely return, now in my top favourites of CLs

A Delightful Site!

A very large, pretty site which is very well maintained. It is run by a friendly team of wife, husband and father all of whom visit each guest frequently providing local information and help when need. Idealy positioned to explore Hay and the many walks nearby. Facilities are perfect in all respects. The entrance is narrow with a sharp turn around a terrace of houses. I have a long caravan towed by a long car and could only enter and leave by unhitching and using the mover to turn the corner. Smaller outfits should proceed with care; there are many scratches on the stonework in the turn!

Great stay, Covid-19 safe and friendly.

Thanks, we had a great stay, Covid-19 taken seriously. Great space, peaceful and quiet. Short walk into Hay. Good restaurants and lots of nice walking direct from the site. Thanks Lynda for all your attention. Bill and Jan.

Just excellent

Just returned from 3 nights over the Bank Holiday weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend & although Hay was quite busy because of the Bank Holiday it was totally peaceful on the site. Beautiful location and loads of space to chose a pitch. Clean facilities & as previous reviews have pointed out, plenty of hand sanitizer. Lynda & Pete the greet both very welcoming and informative of things to do locally. Went into the tourist office & got some leaflets of short walks locally which were really good & only cost 40p each. Hay has plenty to do within the town as well. It is a hidden gem & I will definitely be returning as I don't live that far away, have already recommended to my sister & husband for next year.

Dark Orchard is a hidden gemstone!

We (2 adults, two children aged 8 & 9) have just returned home from a lovely weekend spent in Hay on Wye at the Dark Orchard CL, and what a fantastic weekend we had. Lynda was a perfect host from initial contact to discuss the booking, throughout our stay right up to the moment we left the site. The site itself is large - easily accommodating 5 outfits with ample space for all. Access is fine from the main road, we approached Hay on Wye via the A436 and the B4351. Worth noting at this time the extra effort being put in by the site owners to counter Covid-19 spread with hand sanitisers at the gate, water stations and the elsan. Hay on Wye is truly delightful and only a short walk away. Noteworthy are the river side walks which will take you to 'The Warren'. from there it is a short walk back into town where there is not shortage of book shops, antique and curio shops and a particular family favourite - Shepherds Ice cream parlour! The is a supermarket about 400 yard from the site should you need it and several pubs and restaurants in the town. I cannot speak highly enough if this site, and we shall definitely return!

A Perfect Off-Grid Situation

A perfect situation, nicely off grid and away from it all but a short walk to all the amenities of wonderful Hay-on-Wye, and longer walks in every direction up those hills and along the river. Made to feel very welcome, with handy local tips by Lynda and Peter. Highly recommended.

A peaceful stay

What a beautiful CL site. Lovely surroundings, so quiet just the sound of the river yet only 5 minute walk into Hay. There’s plenty of space for 5 vans, if you like being off grid then this is perfect. We had a lovely welcome from Lynda standing in for the official meeter & greeter, although we did meet Peter when we were leaving and he gave us a lovely farewell. Just a word of warning if you’re in a large Motorhome, the turn by the row of cottages just before the site entrance is quite tight, we are an 8m Motorhome, 2.2m wide and managed it with care. I can highly recommend this site and will definitely return.

Epitome of a CL site

Putting this on my ‘little gem’ list. The epitome of a CL site. Two lush grass fields to accomodate 5 units and located 5 minutes from one of Wales’ most wonderful towns. Ideal for dogs and surrounded by wild life, we had a woodpecker in the tree next to us. Great welcome from Peter the Greeter who is a mine of information and always up for a chat. Linda too makes a point of visiting all new arrivals. Highly recommended.

little Gem

arrived on Saturday 18th july for a two night break. Warm welcome off owner Peter { lovely Gentleman} and later we met Linda [Peter's Daughter] who helps run site. large field with plenty of room to social distance, lots of sanitiser around site etc: entrance gate, fresh / waste water areas and refuse area also. lovely levelled mowed grass. Short walk into Hay on wye & river walk pathway near by that you can cycle on too. we will go back and next time take our bike to cycle the path trail. Please make sure you follow directions and not Sat Nav as I did. do not approach from B4348 its very narrow (although I got through I would not recommend if you are a nervous driver] I have a 7mtr Motorhome so once down at entrance there was a very tight turn so needed to reverse around to get into site. B4350 is the right road and makes entrance so much easier to access.
