Not up to expectations

This CL did not live up to our expectations of a £12.50 per night for a non-electric site. On arrival, this CL had very long grass and, despite this being cut late on in our stay, it was still long. During the weekdays we were there, RAF planes were flying very low over the CL up to 1.00am. This island caters more for the marina than the CL and was not peaceful during the weekend period. During our 6 night stay, we did not meet the warden, and we feel that the CL is poor value for money compared with other CLs on the network, falling well below our expectations.

What a great spot

Lovely site on the banks of the Thames. Easy to find spot with a coded gate to enter. We found a spot overlooking the river as are all 5 of the pitches. We where greeted by the manager who was very pleasant.Great pub near the entrance with good food and drink, also with canoes to hire. There is another camp site on the over side of the river but this didn’t cause any noise issues. Your can cross the road and take lovely walks along the river to the locks about 30 mins away. Water and waste facilities near the entrance. Good phone and TV reception.

River Retreat

Over the years we have visited the Island CL at Friars Court many times. It never changes and we never tire returning here. The CL offers the essential basics of a CL (fresh potable water, elsan and grey water disposal, rubbish disposal and decent access) yet punches above its status owing to its location being bang on the bank of the Thames. The required essentials are impeccably maintained. The layout is informal but all caravans tend to pitch next to the river's bank which is wonderful as it is so relaxing to watch the wildlife and boats pass by. The Thames footpath runs nearby as do other footpaths. We even managed to launch our inflatable canoe from the CL. Clanfield is charming, Faringdon and Bampton are the closest locations for shops. The owner is charming and visits you to ensure you know where the facilities are located but is never intrusive. No EHU or toilets / showers, and all the better for it! The CL is firmly one of our favourites and return visits will happen!

Truly Unique

Sitting here on Friars Court Island writing this review. Late April, it's a wonderful place. We're on the CL feild but the cricket bat feild looks great too. Being pitched so close to the river is wonderful. The field is massive, plenty of room to spread out and no marked pitches. There is water, elsan and rubbish. The access to walking from the site is great and very easy, particularly if you want to pick up the Thames path. Interesting planes going over head into Brize Norton too. There is no road noise at all and everyone is very friendly. The site warden, Ian, is a lovely chap and his welcome was a very warm one. At £12.50 pn it's good value and we would definitely return and recommend visiting this unique place.

Is there a better CL....................I think not.

We stayed at this fantastic site with friends for a weekend and we all agreed it has to be one of if not the best CL to visit! you park up right on the bank of the Thames, you have a public house 5 minute walk away the same distance gets you on the Thames path as well, with great places of interest to visit, we walked along the Thames path into the small market town of Lechlade (7 miles, comfortable 3 hours walk) for a bite to eat and a look around. the site itself is so peaceful with no noise or light polution (such a treat in this day and age), there is a fresh water tap along with toilet waste facilities and rubbish bins. Such a great place to just sit by your motorhome on the river bank watching the world go by!

Best CL we have visited - riverside pitches

We stayed on the huge Cricket Bat Field, which runs along the riverside on the opposite bank to the Thames Path. First time we have been pitch our 7.5m motorhome on a river bank, and sit next to the bank for the evening, with no barriers or passers by. It was a real delight. Stayed in June - and despite about c.24 hours of rain we were still able to drive off the site. Water at the field entrance - toilet emptying and waste disposal were some distance away - we just drove along, and then back. Pub next to site entrance, and great Thames path walks in both directions. Owner and manager were very helpful and available - and even gave us a lift one morning. No road noise at night - one night the RAF were flying a lot, but that stopped by midnight. Perfect peaceful spot highly recommended (although perhaps not if you have small children).

Unique location

We stayed here a couple of months ago and loved it! We were on the Island part of the CL which I would definitely recommend, and parked up just metres away from the Thames. It was lovely to wake up to the view of the river and we even saw a kingfisher one day. The pub is great and we were lucky enough to be there for a couple of sunny days so could sit in the pub garden with a beer! Great walks along the Thames either way, very picturesque and peaceful. Really nice to get away from it all and have some time out. Facilities were fine, as described.

A very unique site

We actually stayed on the Cricket Bat field site which is operated by the same owners and just a few hundred yards further down the river, but I also took the chance to have a good look around the Island site and make a video of both sites (links below) which can show them far better than I can describe them. Island CL Site https://youtu.be/_g6KV8wIqY4 Cricket Bat Field https://youtu.be/_HAfOUdCnYw The Cricket Bat field doesn't have the uniqueness of the Island site in that it is not fully encircled by the Thames, but it is spacious, has plenty of riverside pitches, and is quieter being further back from the road and the pub etc. The downside is that the toilet emptying and bins are back at the island site but not really a problem. It's used for rallies and small group hire but to be honest it's such a large field with rows of trees to break up the view that it still felt almost empty with the dozen or so vans there when we stayed. The Island site is closer to the activity around the pub, the bridge and camp site on the opposite bank of the river. It still has plenty of space and riverside pitches and of course is limited to five vans. Both great sites to visit for a unique experience.

Messing around by the river

I have just spent a week on this delightful site on an island in the thames, waking up to the sound of ducks or the gentle sound of a narrow boat chugging by. I have nothing negative to say about this site, the local pub made us very welcome and their evening music on Friday did not disturb us although we were only a little way away. The pub does have a glamping site on the opposite bank but again this did not impact on our enjoyment one bit. The site is great for fishing and Bryan the site manager issued a permit and was very welcoming and helpful. This has gone to the top spot on my list of favourite CL's.
