Not so scenic views

A well organised site with not a lot to add to what others have said but we never met the owners and we were disappointed with the lack of views. We appreciate things change since the listing was first put on and hedges grow but the site was chosen because it mentioned scenic views.

Ideal - especially for Stansted

We booked this site with links from the CL Booking App. We paid up fully for the two nights before we arrived (now £18 per night) so we never saw the owners once whilst we were there. Before arriving we were emailed details of the code for the gate padlock. Note - there are 4 numbers on the padlock not the five we were told - so it's a process of elimination as to what number to start with! There are two hard standings - so we highly recommend booking in advance if you require a hard standing. The entrance to the actual camping field was pretty muddy, so we were glad we managed to get on a hard standing, especially as we are in a motorhome. Had we not we would have booked to go elsewhere, especially after all the recent wet weather. Electricity is metered - we think we put in £5 for the two nights. There is a shower and WC located on the adjoining static caravan site - the shower is coin operated. We didn't use the facilities. National Cycle Route 31 is located close to the CL. On the afternoon of our arrival we cycled it to Sudbury - which meant we cycled some of our return ride in the dark! Thank goodness we have good lights on our bikes. We had plotted a loop for our return ride - had we seen the state of the puddled, potholed country lanes beforehand we possibly would have cycled back the way we had cycled there. We actually cycled the same lanes the following day and saw just how bad they were. Fortunately the lanes were pretty quiet. The Chappel viaduct is a 5 minute cycle ride from the CL, and is worth going to view. The CL's proximity to Stansted airport was ideal for us, as we were picking up our son from the airport on our departure day - so we stayed until just before 12 before heading out towards the airport. Fortunately there are a number of lay-bys to park up in before getting to the airport. We may well return in the future as there are lots of quiet lanes ideal for cycling.

Fab place

What a lovely place to visit. Very small which was great for us. Jenny greeted us just after we arrived, then left us to it, but was there or on the phone if needed. We loved it here. 15 minutes from Colchester Zoo, 5 minutes from the railway station, less than 10 minute walk to little post office / shop who were really helpful. Lovely and quiet, everyone was really friendly. Facilities were really clean and tidy. Will definitely be back to do some of the lovely local walks. We didn't get to the pub which was only a 10 minute walk away, but others staying did and they said it was really nice. Lovely big garden centre nearby with good cafe. Thanks Jenny and Matt.

A local site which will become a regular site.

This is a well thought out site with all the facilities and space needed. Fairly easy access and convenient for the local bus service. Food pub in walking distance. Booked online and owner called to see all was well. Metered electricity but not a problem.

Odd toilet block/bathroom

Stayed here last weekend. In essence this site appears to be a plot of land that the owners have set up pitches and then left the visitors to their own devices. There are 5 pitches in a decent flat field and two hardstandings. We were glad we didn't opt for the hardstandings as they faced a stark looking fence. We never had any human contact from the owners - the booking was all on-line and upon arrival the message was very much 'look after yourself'. This lack of on-site 'supervision' meant that the pitch next to us had a load of their family visit for the day - which in this current climate is not allowed. I did let the owners know about this but had no response. The toilet is a bit odd - it reminded me of the 'Cooler' in 'The Great Escape'. They had tried to make it look like a bathroom inside which included a hand towel. In this current climate?! So there was this solitary unisex bathroom - to serve 7 pitches. The door into the toilet was a barn door with gaps - when drying yourself by the door you really didn't feel it was very private. On the plus side we took our road bikes and had a nice afternoon riding in the north Essex countryside and on another day caught the bus to Earls Colne. The bus stop was 2 mins walk down the lane and they go every 30 mins, The local pub (10-15 mins walk away) was lovely and you have the viaduct as the backdrop. This wasn't a bad site - it just lacked a bit on the facilities and 'owner interaction'

Lovely Site - with video

Spent a few very nice days here. Large open site with plenty of room to set up. The site is flat and very secure with decent facilities. The local village very pleasant with a handy little shop and nice play area under the viaduct. Short walk to the bus stop for buses into colchester. https://youtu.be/cwW60qvUWxM

Very Accommodating

Had a lovely stay and will come back if we are in the area. The padlock on the gate is rather fiddly but not a huge problem. Jenny and Matt are very accommodating. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Unlockdown

Having had 4 holidays cancelled due to covid- I was feeling very tentative about this break but equally desperate to get away!!!! Communication from Greenacres during lockdown was easy and I was responded to quickly despite the site gaving no more real knowledge if when they were opening. However the 4th was booked long before the pandemic so when release was given- yippee. We stayed here for two nights as we were touring. There was a toilet and a shower- coin operated shower which were very clean £1 for 10 mins was also more than enough. We also had to use coins for the electricity ehu - once again very cheap and no bother. The site was lovely quiet peaceful. The village of Chappel with the viaduct was fab. There were some lovely walks of which we completed one. The site was very quiet and well maintained. Many thanks and thoroughly recommended

Lovely site

A very easy visit. The booking was great (online), the sat nav brought us direct to the site, code for gate already given and site ready to pitch on. The site is very well kept, neat and tidy, very clean facilities and lots of sanitiser. Quiet location with some lovely walks direct from the site. Beautiful fields of comfrey, lovely walk along the Colne. The viaduct is very impressive. Nice local shop and the pub looks good but we did not go this time. Coin meter for electricity seemed very reasonable, less than £1 a day.
