Absolute Gem of A Site!

After our fourth stay now at Hawton Waters, I feel compelled to write this review because this place is just too lovely not to share! Hawton Waters really is a gem of a site, and it has definitely secured its place as our favourite CL - and we are well travelled Motorhomers! The setting is just stunning, and the place has such a peace about it, it’s impossible not to relax! In fact when we showed some friends a photo from one of our stays they asked if the view from our rear lounge window was a painting as it was that picturesque!! (Lake side pitch). Maria is a wonderful host – very attentive and always checks we are ok - Thanks Maria for always making us feel very welcome and for creating such a perfect setting for a relaxing place to stay. If you are thinking of staying here you will not be disappointed – like I say we have stayed here four times now and plan on many more visits in the future. Highly recommend this absolute gem of a site.

Just perfect!

We stayed here for only three nights as part of our 'homeland tour schedule' and we were absent from the CL during daytime with various rendezvous to keep. This was our first visit back to UK since emigrating in 2018 so it was primarily a 'friends and family catch-up' excursion. We regretted the shortness of the stay immediately the awning was being stowed away, the CL suited us perfectly being set on a vast country estate with freedom to roam afforded by the owners. Yes, of course your dog should be under close control on farmland... but there are acres and acres of grassland and a beautiful path around the substantial lake - so if the collar happens to be slipped occasionally nobody's likely to notice. We enjoyed a view directly over the lake, as wildfowl enthusiasts this was quite splendid. A truly delightful place to pitch, administered by landowner Maria and estate manager Tony in the most helpful and sociable way. Only on our final evening did I discover that young Maria and I were raised in the same village, although not of the same generation! Thank you to the delightful Maria, the exuberant Tony and our lovely neighbours for helping to search for our keys... that weren't actually lost! Sorry... Such is the natural wonder and sheer space of Hawton Waters that I wouldn't be surprised to see it upgraded some day soon, with a local authority licence for many more pitches or 'pods' of one sort or another. The owners have already invested well and it's difficult to imagine a neutral (let alone profitable) balance sheet based upon the revenue from just five CL pitches. I only hope that the lakeside CL will be retained, with development of additional facilities kept sufficiently separate so the Caravan Club association isn't lost. Let's make it clear that we are ancient CL users and we are happy with a grass field and a water tap, mains hook-up is a luxury. An evening's entertainment is a smokey plancha meal or BBQ over several hours with a decent bottle of wine or two (just as well we brought some from France) and jovial conversation while we count the stars and monitor the nocturnal wildlife. We don't seek candyfloss, one-armed-bandits, laundry blocks nor provided entertainment. I wish we had stayed a fortnight. Longer, even. J.

never again

On arrival at this site there was no-one about so we knocked on the door of the house and spoke to a gentleman. We asked him where we should park our motorhome as we had recieved a confimation email we were booked on. He advised us that as we did not require ehu we could go anywhere we liked, so as we were there to fish, we parked and set up by the lake. About 2 hours later a lady came with three dogs one not on lead ( states clearly that campers dogs MUST be on leads which ours was) which came over to have a go at ours, but she managed to recall it. She then said I hope you are not planning to park here for the night? to which we relayed what the gentleman had told us, and we were all set up. She said ok and would be down to see us later without these (dogs). A few hours later we were fishing with our backs to the motorhome we heard a commotion and turned to see the owners dog set upon our ten year old dog who was on her lead and no eacape. We ran and chased it away, it was with the owners daughter on the golf buggy and out of control. We just held our hands up to say, what the hell? She said sorry. Our little 10 year old dog was covered in saliva and hurt her leg trying to get away. She was trembling for hours, We immedietley packed up and were off first thing next morning to the vets. wher she was diagnosed with a ruptured cruciate ligament. £2000 operation and 12 months recovery, which due to her age we are reluctant to put her through. I had an email the next day from the owner to see if we were coming back and if we needed ehu. I told her what had happened (which went to her i phone and was read) but did not hear anything till the next day with an apology, that her daughter had forgotten to put them on leads.

Excellent Location, great owners..!

We picked this CL as a convenient overnight stop over from Suffolk to Cumbria. What a super location. Very tidy, professional and caring operation (Maria was delightful & welcoming) - although we only stayed the night, we would definitely stay again..!😎👍

Fantastic CL

What an amazing place to stay! The owner is friendly, the site is kept well mown and spotlessly clean and tidy. The views over the lake are breath taking and the walks in the well managed woodland are magical. Will we be returning? - Definitely! In fact, I’ve booked several future weekends before even leaving. This site is a real hidden gem.

Wonderful and well kept site

We stayed at Hawton Waters on our way north to Whitby. My wife and I were so pleased that we also booked for the return trip and then also stayed an extra night. This is a very rural site surrounded by open countryside, but the big attraction is the beautiful lake which we both enjoyed walking round and our dog thought she had arrived in heaven, with so many new smells to explore she really enjoyed her walks, and the first time in her six year she learned to swim. This coupled with the warm welcome and the very friendly atmosphere made for a very pleasant stay. We look forward to returning another day.

One of my favourite cls.

This is one of my favourite sites it's perfect base for discovering the area, the site is always kept pristine. Loads of walks within the site. The only gripe I have is having to carry the waste to the gate. Being disabled I have to use the car for this. Apart from that I have no negatives, owners friendly as are their children they are a credit to them so polite.

Lovely site, very friendly and welcoming

This is a lovely peaceful site in a quiet rural location, a few minutes away from Newark. The owner was lovely and friendly, and the site has a large mostly level field. The grey waste comment on an earlier review is now out of date - there are sturdy brick disposal areas for both grey and toilet waste. All in all a lovely site and we will return if we're in the area.

What a Gem!

When we arrived we were buzzed in through the security gate and told to pitch where we liked, we did with a lovely view of the lake. The site is really well kept with lovely views all around. There are plenty of walks along the river Devon and wooded area. A perfect site for us will definitely be visiting again.
