Holmside, wonderful place

We returned today to South Wales after spending three weeks at Holmside. Everything others have said and more. Caroline is exceptionally helpful, whilst never being intrusive. She even offered help to put up our awning when we arrived. When we left, the recommended route out of the village had a road closure, access and exit is harder the other way but we put the car on the grass verge outside and moved the caravan wit( the mover. Caroline came out and helped in case of traffic coming around the bend a few yards away. It proved much easier than we’d thought. Breakfast and afternoon tea, on separate occasions, were delicious, what a treat having them brought to the van! Such a lovely, unspoilt area, it was like going back in time, people were so helpful and welcoming, from the locksmith we had to visit when the lock broke on the caravan door, to the young man in a supermarket car park who fetched a trolley for us ( he wasn’t an employee, must have felt sorry for us! ) Wastwater was my favourite tranquil, stunningly beautiful place. It was so hot one day, my husband swam and I sat on a rock with my feet in the water, watching a lovely young family having great fun in the water. Bliss. We also visited Enerdale, The Hardknott Pass ( an adventure) , had a train trip on L’aal Ratty, St Bees and Seascale for beaches and ice cream, Whitehaven was also lovely. We did a little trip to Keswick, which we’ve visited several times in the past, but it was very busy. We ordered good weather! We were so fortunate, the sun shone for most of our time there, rained the last few days but that’s what makes it so beautiful. I wish I could say we will return, but it is a long journey and as we are getting on a bit now, it’s becoming tougher. But if you have the chance, go there.

Superb site, owner and location

Full review and photos: https://www.theroadtwospoons.co.uk/blog/holmside-cl-review Holmside CL is a beautifully situated CL in the Western Lake District. Located between the beaches of the West coast and Wasdale which is home to Scafell Pike (the highest peak in England) and Wast Water (the deepest lake in England). Due to its location and setting Holmside CL is ideal for a variety of people to enjoy. You can be at the beach in Drigg within around 10 minutes with other options available such as Bootle or St Bees in 20-30 minutes. Depending on traffic due to narrow roads you'll find yourself at the North end of Wast Water in the main car parks in around 30 minutes.

A Little Gem

We spent a long bank holiday weekend here. Caroline, the owner, was extremely friendly and welcoming. Large hard standing pitches with electric. Toilet and shower room on site, free of charge and immaculate. Fresh and grey water, elsan and rubbish/recycling on site. A hut contains local goods with a honesty box and information files on local interests, restaurants and take aways. Thank you for a lovely few days away. Shame you aren’t closer to home. We’ll be back.

Fantastic

We have just spent four nights at Holmside. What a fantastic site. Shower and toilet very modern and clean. Excellent location for exploring the western lakes. Very good information hut, with DVD's you can borrow as well as books. We didn't make use of the breakfasts on offer, but we did see Caroline delivering them to a couple of vans. The site is only 12 months old, so all the facilities, grey waste etc are new and easily located as you have to drive past them. If you are into horses, there are a few in the adjacent fields. Overall, highly recommended and we will definately stay here when next in the area. My nomination for CL of the year.

Great Site

Stayed for just the one night in our camper van. Agree with others that this site is immaculate. Facilities were excellent with flat, spacious hard standing pitches with grassed areas next to them.12 minute walk to the first pub in the lovely village of Gosforth, The Kelbank ( great food and beer). Not the best weather but hey ho, it is February. Good spot to stay if you intend to chalk some Wainwrights off as well . Will definately return again later in the year.

Ha a really great Christmas and New Year at Holmside

We have just left Holmside having spent 10 nights over Christmas and New Year. Caroline is so helpful and welcoming it feels like we have a new friend. A campsite gathering was organised for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve with mulled wine/hot pimms and a wonderful buffet. It made the festive times so friendly. We were able to order a 3 course Christmas lunch (£20pp) from Caroline which was delivered to the van and was delicious. We also had breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner delivered during the week which were equally great. A lovely area on the west of the Lakes, close enough to visit the busier east side but much quieter. Can’t wait to go back.

Without a doubt the best site for a relaxing and peaceful stay

We stayed here at Bank Holiday weekend in August and I can only echo the comments from other visitors. The site is immaculately maintained with huge pitches and plenty of space. Caroline and Alison are fabulous hosts and really make everyone feel very welcome. Great location for visiting the beautiful West Cumbrian coast and valleys. We had the Cumbrian breakfast and afternoon teas delivered to our caravan by Caroline and Alison and WOW, the food is fantastic (afternoon tea arrived with teapot and china cups and saucers and was beautifully presented). You can’t fault this site in any way, the facilities are superb including the hut with homemade cakes, games, books and lots of local information. You will not be disappointed if you choose Holmside for your break.

hidden gem

beautiful site just outside the village of Gosforth. Site is immaculate and owners are lovely. The on site horses are a bonus if you like them as do we! The info shed, with its honestly box for cakes, is so nice. Its a lovely spot with very nice touches that make it a perfect place if you want peace and quiet and tranquility.

Beautiful site, wonderful hosts (homecooked food available!) and stunning landscape

We stayed here for 8 nights from late July and it was the ideal place to enjoy the Western Lakes and not too far from Coniston and Ambleside (as long as you don't mind some breath-taking driving routes!). We wanted to climb Scafell Pike and you can actually see the summit from the site (when the weather was clear!) so we had the best vantage point. The site itself was easy to find and very accessible with clear instructions of which route in to take, just make sure you take heed of the signs that state 'Unsuitable for Caravans' and don't rely on your sat nav. It was a real bonus having a recently built toilet and shower room on the site - especially with our family of 5! The pitches are very clearly marked and there's a handy hut on site with local information. Our hosts couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, especially Caroline who impressed us with her wonderful selection of reasonably priced home-cooked food and pulled out all the stops for a family afternoon tea and cooked breakfast during our stay - the perfect treat! We also had a dog with us and whilst we didn't fully explore walks nearby, the site has a handy small field to allow well-behaved dogs to let off steam (ours isn't though, so we kept him on the lead!). All in all a great first experience caravaning in The Lakes and one we hope to repeat before too long.
