Great Site for Exploring Northern Fells/Northern Lake District

We've stayed on this site twice so far this year; once in April, and most recently in August. As mentioned in another review, the site layout has changed. It is now only a 3 pitch site due to the 2 small luxury cabins that have been built taking up the space where the 2 lower caravan pitches used to be. Although I agree, the views would be better if they cabins weren't there, if it was fully booked in the old 5 pitch layout, there would been 2 caravans in the same place as the cabins currently are, arguably blocking more of the view than the cabins if awnings were set up. For us, it didn't really spoil the view. It blocks a small part of the views of the fields, but you still get views down the valley and you can clearly see Barrow, Catbells and the mountains towards Keswick. Another review mentioned that the site is a bit tired, however, I'm guessing this has been redone at the same time as the cabins were added. It is now well gravelled and the hard standing pitches are in good condition. The only negative part is the pretty acute slope on all pitches. The 2 times we've stayed, we've been in the upper pitch and you will definitely need blocks underneath your jockey wheel and front steadies. It's a really quiet site and depending on the day, the loudest thing is either the hens, or the owner of the hens looking for the adventurous little chickens that have wandered off - Morning calls of "Millie, come on Millie, Millimina, come on now" are quite funny to listen to, and you can buy the eggs The water and Elsan points are very close and well positioned. There are no scary, narrow roads heading there; always a worry in The Lakes. However, depending on which way you come, the turn into the site is a bit tight. We head down from the North on the A591 and there is no issue turning right into the site, but heading from the South (if you come down A66 and pass Keswick onto the A591) you will most likely have to go onto the other side of the road to get the clearance needed to turn left into the site. Other than that it is an easy entrance and exit.....I'm towing a 7.380m / 24′3″ long caravan. We're planning to go back within the next month or so and it will be one of or 2 regular choices when going to the Norther Lake District. If the pitches weren't as sloped, I would have rated this site a 5 - We're not bothered by no toilets or showers so won't deduct from the rating for that.

Not what we expected

If you think you are going to have an un-obilterated view of Bassenthwaite Water (as per the picture) you, like us, will be massively disapointed. The site now has 2 wooden clad Mobile homes (See https://kilnhillbarn.co.uk/) Lodges at the front of the site obscuring the veiws from the CL pitches which are now placed further to the back. As an aside, on leaving the site, it was difficult to see the traffice coming from the right and you have to be a long way out of the entrance to get a clear veiw. It is very unlikely that we will be visiting this site again.

Stunning views - tired site

The views from the CL are stunning - in between Lake District clouds! And a motor mover is pretty much essential here - especially if the ground is wet. However, for a CL in such a beautiful location, a little bit of investment to sort drainage, mark out and perhaps extend and level the pitches a little would be most welcomed. Our pitch by the stile got muddier and muddier as our stay progressed with all the rainwater coming down the drive and settling around our van. A motorhome came in during our stay and made a mess of trying to get in the top pitch by the barn and ended up parking up on the bottom - very close to other units and running their electric lead right across the site. With the 3 bottom pitches not marked out clearly, it was difficult to know what space we had and had we wished to erect an awning, would have struggled to know where to put our vehicle - especially as the middle caravan on our arrival had gone in sideways. We love CLs dearly - and in comparison to many others now, we felt Kiln Hill Barn to be tired. Be careful on arrival - the site does creep up! We missed the entrance first time, but there is safe turning a little further on. In fact, turning into the site from the right is a lot easier! Very easy electronic payment from the owners. So apologies for the slightly negative review - it is, as it was!

Return for fantastic views

This is our 4th visit and the views are very special, still peaceful and a good walk to the sunn inn well worth it food great Just a couple of niggles the hardstanding has worn away making it muddy on the front pitches, Theresa who is looking after the site said they have plans to renew this but can only complete when the bookings reduce. In the meantime it would help them if club members used their grey water collectors and not just drain away waste directly on the ground as happened while were there on both sides of us as we were in the middle pitch. A sign for the disposal of grey water would be helpful as it seems people are not sure where it should go. Still enjoyed our stay and will return yet again Pete/Karen

Amazing Views

We have just had our first stay here and this site has amazing views, The Sun Inn a mile away and plenty of walking in the area. We loved the location and would stay again, however, we have one or two things to mention, our first encounter with the owners was a request to pay the full amount for our stay in advance a MONTH before our arrival, a deposit is sometimes requested but this is a first for us and we use cl sites most of the time. The instructions for A591 from Keswick, although appear clear on reading, the entrance is obscured and the caravan club sign is not clear on approach so nearly all new arrivals had to turn round in the hotel car park higher up the road. The pitches are all accessed by a single track road, as you can see in the picture, and are difficult to negotiate onto without a motor mover as you're not allowed on the grass (there are signs everywhere), if the caravans have awnings on the lower three pitches cars cannot park easily as there is only one car width at back of each caravan (there wasn't as much room as picture shows), so we had to keep asking the two other caravanners to move their cars to be let in and out. We also had a lot of heavy rain, the lower three pitches have very poor drainage and we were all waterlogged.

Good time at Kiln Hill Barn

Spent 4 nights in October. View from the pitches towards Borrowdale is fantastic. Site is very quiet. Somewhat muddy in wet weather. Access is easy from the A591, though you come across the site entrance at very short notice when driving from Keswick (More detailed directions are available on Kiln Hill's own website). Under new ownership and management since August 2019. We received a warm welcome and were invited to choose from the available pitches, which are all on a slope. Approach to customers is friendly and relaxed. We only used the EHU, waste disposal and fresh water facilities so didn't verify the other facilities advertised.

Amazing Site

We booked this site in the depths of winter when you really need a summer holiday to look forward too. We were not disappointed. The views are spectacular and we found many walks we could do from the site. The site is well maintained and very clean. We are now planning a holiday next May with our neice and nephew and hoping to stay here then.

Delightful return

We stated this time last year that we would return here as it is a delightful place with wonderful views and for once the weather was the icing on the cake. Great base for walks and access to Keswick and nearby areas of interest. Lambs bouncing around with bird life of all varieties. Peaceful site and good for stargazing toboot. Even enjoyed the diggers preparing the New water pipeline. Once again we enjoyed a great c/l site and look forward to our next stay.

Lakes Distillery Tour

We chose this site for its proximity to the Lakes Distillery, having been given one of their gift tokens as a birthday present. The CL was easy to find. The owners were welcoming, and showed us the available pitches, and location of water/waste points. All 5 piches were occupied but well spaced so not feeling crowded. As the site is sloping, all pitches benefit from lovely open view down the valley. The Sun Inn is a short walk away in the village of Bassenthwaite, and The Castle Inn Hotel only a few hundred meters up the road. Bus stops opposite the Castle Inn have regular services to Cockermouth/Workington, & Penrith (service X4). We walked to the Lakes Distllery (well worth a visit) or the bus route X4 running every other hour stops there. We will visit again.
