Peaceful, with beautiful scenery

This was our first visit to a CL and we were not disappointed. We stayed 5 nights on a hard standing. Each pitch has EHU and a picnic bench. There is a toilet and a chemical waste point. The CL site is on a working dairy farm but this just enhanced the whole experience. The cattle are milked twice daily but this doesn’t interfere with the peacefulness of the site. The scenery around is lovely. There is a local pub in the village within walking distance, which we were told is excellent but only opens late afternoon. Would highly recommend a stay on the site. We will definitely return.

Fabulous

This site is fabulous. Ross makes you feel very welcome and is full of information about the area, always happy to talk about his farm. The site is on A WORKING DAIRY FARM, so you have to accept there will be moo-ing and noise quite early in the morning. We are early risers so not a problem for us. The cows also attract lots of flies, so make sure you have your fly nets down. They weren't too much of a problem for us, we still ate outside and enjoyed the lovely views of the surroundings. The local pub is only half a mile or so away, very welcoming and we had a lovely roast there on the Sunday. The farm is part of an old Manor estate, the Manor House and church are adjacent to the site. Lots of history to discover. We used the Tarka Trail many times, flat or only gentle inclines. We do not have e-bikes and managed to put the miles in, riding as far as Yeardle and, the other way, to Fremington Quay. There are plenty of coffee and cake stops along the trail so you can take your time. Bideford is only 3 miles away. We had a lovely week there and would definitely return.

What a Gem !!

The Barton is situated in a quiet and pretty setting. The village of Weare Gifford has a regular bus, which stops outside the site. Local attractions of the Dartington Glass Works and the RHS Gardens Rosemoor are both only a few miles away. Our welcome was friendly and although we didn’t require anything, we felt the site owner would have been happy to help. The pitches are level, the water taps are nearby and all have EHU. The grass was nicely mowed and everywhere was tidy, and very good value for money. Overall an excellent site and would thoroughly recommend.

We'll be Back

My wife and I had a most enjoyable three nights at The Barton. We endorse everything that's been written about the good facilities, setting, tranquillity etc. Ross is a star. He interrupted his work at milking time to pull our motorhome out of the rut that I'd caused in his wet grass and laughed as he did it. 'You're not the first and you won't be the last', he observed. It is a working farm and all the more enjoyable for that.

Peaceful, sheltered well kept site in rural North Devon

5 level hard standing pitches arranged in a curve around a central grass area over looking a horse paddock next to the farm. Picnic bench and EHU for each pitch and a couple of water points. It's a working farm so expected some noise but other than the farmer whistling (presumably at his dogs) at 5.45am we heard nothing other than bird song. There is an information board with the pub menu and bus times. It would have been useful to have directions on how to access the tarka trail on foot which I found but was a bit of a mission! Left out of the site, along the road, over the bridge at Annery Kiln and there are some steep steps on the left immediately after you walk under a bridge. I turned left on the trail and walked to the bridge over the river with a great view of the Aquaduct and back (5.5 miles). Along that stretch of the tarka trail they are restoring the Rolle Canal and there are various information boards explaining the history. The site owners are obviously busy farmers and we didn't meet them but paid by bank transfer.

A peaceful friendly gem of a site

It really is a farm site so, if you don’t like cows, then this is not for you. Beautiful surroundings and very close to the Tarka Trail for cycling and walks. The family are very friendly and laid back but still obviously hard working farmers. The facilities are clean with 5 level hard standing pitches for year round and grass pitches for better weather. We really enjoyed our stay and our cycle to Barnstable which had a great stop off at Fremington Quay. We’d love to return again and recommend it to anyone who wants peace with active options.

Lovely peaceful site

I cannot really say much more than that posted by Wherenext below. Although both of the sites were nearly fully occupied the whole time we were there there was no excessive noise, it is a very peaceful quiet site. Ross the owner was very friendly and extremely helpful when we had a problem with our caravan. We too will use this site again when back in this area.

Disappointed

I always book CL sites as I like peace and quiet and not too many people. When I arrived at the Barton there were 11 vans in total. I know 5 were separated from the other 6 by a bit of stock fencing, and that technically it’s allowed, but I agree with another reviewer that it really isn’t in the spirit of CL sites. I’m just suprised more people don’t feel the same!

Excellent stay at a reasonably priced CL in North Devon

We had a pleasant stay at this new to us CL set about 3 miles south of Bideford in North Devon. When approaching from the north from the A386 turn left just after the sign for Weare Giffard. Drop down to a very sharp left turn under the Park Trail (old railway bridge). Take care here (use of a car horn might be advisable). Continue over a humped back bridge and through the start of a long village. there are passing places. At the top of a hill the farm can be seen on the right and the turn in easy to see. There are 2 parts to this caravan area. One is a CL, the other (The Paddock) isn't. They are separated by a wooden fence. The hardstanding pitches are just for the unit and can slope slightly depending which pitch you end up on. Not a great bother though. Car goes on the grass, where a picnic table is provided for your own use. EHU is shared. Water points are found around the CL. There is also a wooden shed where the toilet is found (not used by us) and the Elsan point, knee high and adequate. There is also an information board. Bus time tables are best checked but we noticed them passing about once every 2 hours and many stayers used them. Recycling is encouraged. talking of cycling the Tarka trail is accessed from where you left the A386 and is traffic free for many a mile both north and southwards. Bideford has a Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Aldi. Plenty to keep you amused locally. Wifi and mobile phone signal were both excellent (EE). A quiet CL but you will hear the cows being milked early in the morning. Not a problem for us. We'll try to use this CL again when next in the area as it was perfect for our needs.

Back again for another dose of 'Barton magic'

Well, as planned, we were back on The Barton in mid May and again we pitched in 'our' corner pitch 3. The fact that it rained every day for the 2 weeks of our stay did change our plans but didn't lessen the pleasure of the site's situation, great walks and socializing. The grass field became a challenge for some visitors but Ross and the 'Disco' soon got them placed or on their way home. Running repairs and surface improvements to a muddy gateway (Now a sturdy gravel surface) provided entertainment to watch from the caravan. Nothing seems too much trouble for the owners and once again we had a great time and we'll see you both in 2022. Pete and Ev...
