Perfect (Well almost).

Other reviews sum up this site pretty well and it is as tranquil and as idyllically situated as described. The access however is very narrow indeed and I suspect will cause more than a little concern to most. it would be helpful if the arrival and departure times were observed as it was only by chance that we came across a rare passing place to allow an early arrival (Too early) to get by. It would have been a real issue if we were a minute or two earlier or later leaving the site. Arrival and departure times are stated in the handbook for good reason usually. Please be aware that if you have children, there is a concealed disused quarry with deep water. This would certainly be an adventure playground for kids but would pose a risk if they ventured nearby without supervision. Having said all this, it's a great little site and we are pleased that we've found it and we hope to return one day.

Hidden Gem

A long, winding, mainly single track road approach road from St.Issey; no internet or phone signal; poor TV reception and sloping pitches - if you can cope with all this and do not want a manicured site but appreciate quietness and seclusion then you will love this site. We did! The published details are a little out-of-date and we had difficulty contacting the owner before we travelled but it is a gem of a CL. The site sits above a creek running off the Camel estuary. You can walk from the site to Padstow or, if you are less energetic, it is in easy reach by car to this great stretch of coast.

Initially Crowded

This is a truly beautiful spot as detailed in the other reviews however there were some serious drawbacks during our week which are worth considering before booking this site. Firstly, when we arrived we found a combination padlock on the gate which we had not been told about and we therefore did not have the code. Luckily there were other club members on site who were able to give us the code; had there not been anyone there we would have been well and truly stuck, completely blocking the very narrow lane with absolutely no hope of reversing or turning around. To compound this the only phone number for the site kept going to answerphone. I understand that this padlock is a recent addition following an incident of fly tipping however, the fact that we were not contacted and informed of the code shows a lack of organisation and poor communication. Secondly, on arrival we found 5 caravans already on site, one of which was permanently pitched for the season but unoccupied at the time; we were told that the owners come and go regularly and indeed they arrived 2 days before we departed. So, we were the 6th van and our friends were 10 minutes behind us in the 7th! This is not a big site and due to the undulating nature of the ground, places that you can actually pitch are limited, especially if you have an awning. That said, there are numerous hookup points so without an awning and with a bit of imagination there are quite a few options. To compound this, one of the potential pitches had a very active beehive right next to it, although we were told that this was temporary. It took a lot of thinking and negotiating with the people already there to find 2 more pitches but this did result in 4 vans very close together which is not necessarily what you want when you go to a CL. As it was, we couldn’t find a pitch that was suitable for the awning so ended up siting our van temporarily and then moved it the following day when someone left. Thirdly, do take note of the recommended maximum length of 6.5m. The approach road is very narrow and has several very tight turns. We have a Challenger 480 and only just made it round some of these bends. Anything longer and you may find yourself having to “shunt” round these corners. Also, the hedges had not been cut and consequently we ended up with numerous light scratches down the side of both car and van, so probably not for you if you have a new outfit.

Special place

If you are looking for military precision line ups and mowed lawns, look elsewhere! This is an unspoilt CL in a setting with so much nature and stunning surroundings, fantastic views of the countryside, and down the river to Padstow, plenty of space, rabbits visiting at night and egrets wading in the estuary fishing. Very quiet as the lane only services a few properties. If you have young children, note there is water in the old slate quarry and of course, the huge river estuary. The site is sloping in places which adds to the character. The owner was friendly and very helpful with arrival instructions. We enjoyed every moment, sit down by the river as the tide comes in with a cup of tea or glass of wine if you like, you'll probably not see anyone! There are some very nice subtle touches that the owner has done here, you notice them, we did. We would like to return soon, Thank you for this CL!

Trevitha Farm CL Cornwall

I am renewing a review which was lost due to the recent web site change over. There were other reviews for this site too. This is a very lovely CL dipping down to the edge of Little Petherick Creek, not far from the Camel Estuary with walks which include one to Padstow (45 mins-1 hr of peaceful walking taking in the Camel trail.) The site is in a particularly beautiful spot, surrounded by unspoilt countryside however the access is tricky and not for the fainthearted down a long and very narrow steep banked Cornish lane. The rewards are good at the end! Amongst a huge amount of space there is also a nature reserve in an unfenced quarry, a haven of peace and tranquility with wildlife and plants to discover. We visited this CL with friends for many years and for those who like the great escape it is worth a visit. It is possible to launch portable boats on the tidal creek. There are two pubs within reasonable walking distance and shops in nearby Padstow or Wadebridge.

The reluctant reviewer

Okay, why write a review encouraging others to use this site, which we could be tempted to keep secret? Because it is just too good not to share. We stayed here in July. Yes, the access lane is a bit tight. But that is the nature of this part of the world, and is one of it's charms. No real issue, and no noisy passing traffic, in fact hardly any traffic at all. The site is undulating, although there are some flat areas. If you can drive, you can easily get your van level. And with a surplus of electric points, plenty of room, and no marked out pitches, there is an array of opportunities to fine the perfect pitch. The grass is cut, the electric points accessible, and the facilities fine. The views are wonderful, and the peace and quiet a pleasure. The water is a minute away. It is tidal. We had about a four hour window to kayak on each tide. The Camel Trail is a 15 minute walk away on footpaths, and a 20 minute cycle away (don't try to take your bikes along the footpaths). So Padstow is an hours wonderful walk, and Bodmin an hour and a half on cycles (30 minutes to Padstow). The nearest pubs are 20 and 30 minute walks respectively, on quiet lanes (the ones that you will have arrived by). There are buses a 30 minute walk up the creek, or a 30 minute walk on the lanes to St Issey (where the second nearest pub is). This is a wonderful and charming spot, so please don't tell anybody...

No welcome, in fact no one around all week. Bins full, nettles around electric, water & toilet waste. Plus lid wooden &old broken. Not easy, add to that long grass & uneven. Very narrow lane. £16 a night I question greatly! Having said all it is very peaceful &away from it all.Pub 1 mile walk & worth it. Cycling difficult very hilly. Only folks on site all week,

Bliss

This site epitomises the dream of wild camping but with the comforts of water and electric. It's quiet, rural and beautiful with access to the estuary and some lovely walking. If you want to get away from it all but still want to be near Cornwall's more popular attractions then this site is perfect. The site itself is 'undulating' and access is very tight for longer combinations however the pain is more than worth the gain so don't be put off.

Cornish idyll

We first stayed at the CL 15 years ago before it had electric hook-ups. It has since changed hands but apart from the site looking much more overgrown and therefore smaller than we remembered, it is still a beautiful, peaceful site with lovely views. There are fairly flat areas to pitch at the top of the site but it then slopes sharply down to an estuary where when the the tide is out you can walk along the shoreline or launch a canoe or dingy. There is a permissive footpath you can use when the tide is in otherwise, which is great for walking dogs. There is a flooded quarry, which is roped off but it could pose a danger to young children. The owner is very laid back and accommodating but he does occasionally allow more than five caravans, which is always an annoyance when the reason you use CLs is because of the five van rule. The approach to the site is down a very narrow, winding lane so may be difficult for bigger outfits. All in all a gem of a site.

Lovely Hideaway

A very attractive CL in peaceful surroundings mid-way between Wadebridge and Padstow with access to the tidal Little Petherick Creek. The pitches are all on grass. There are lots of walks from this site along the creek and further afield. Padstow is about 45 mins on foot or 20 mins by car, a busy harbour town for most of the year. There is a pub within walking distance but no shops nearby. Also on site is a disused quarry, now an interesting nature reserve, parents would need to be aware of this as it's secluded. Access to the site is down a mile of very narrow lanes with restricted visibility. A friendly owner and a firm favourite with us completes the picture.
