Peace & Tranquility

APRIL 2022 This is a Caravan Club certified adults only site in the heart of Hampshire and just 13 minutes from the charming Village of Romsey with its pubs, restaurants, cafe’s and an Aldi or Waitrose Supermarket, something for everyone’s pocket. The team at Whinwhistle are all lovely. Mandy & Ant were incredible hosts, always available and helpful. There was constant enthusiasm from their team too, the friendliness and fishing tips from John & Oakley and Andy’s culinary skills made our stay all the more enjoyable. We stayed on the VIP lake so had complete privacy but it was still just a short one minute walk to the Cafe and facilities. On arrival we were given a full explanation of where everything was, help in choosing our spot and made to feel very welcome before they left us. We were able to drive our car over to our pitch to unload everything and set up our Motorhome and then park it in the car park just the other side of the lake. The pitch we chose was on grass so I would recommend you have what you need to level up but it was very secluded and private with only the noise of the countryside to listen too. However, there are 5 other lakeside certified hard standing pitches where you can park your vehicle next to your Motorhome if you wanted to. We had beautiful views across the lake with countryside walks right next to it. There and 4 we’ll stocked fishing lakes (one specimen) that fish very well, and you can have your own swim, right outside your pitch for just £10 per day if you want. The toilets and shower although basic are always clean and being due for modernisation soon will be even better in the near future. The fishing shop has all you need including bait and if you’re not sure, just ask, nothing is too much trouble for the team. The fishing tips I was given were invaluable which upped my catch rate to new levels, including a new PB 8lb mirror carp, new skills I will have forever so a big thank you to John & Oakley for checking on how things were going throughout the day and giving me their time to help me improve and quite refreshingly, stop me spending money in the shop on stuff I wasn’t going to need! My fellow anglers were also very friendly and without my newest best friend Eddie, who gave me his time (and his bait) there may never have been that new PB for me! :-) Thanks Eddie! The cafe was open all day and from the full English breakfast to the home made cake and coffee, or just some cheesy chips, everything we had was excellent and freshly made. In summary, you will have a lovely relaxing time and my guess is you will want to return, we have already booked again! A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ to all the team and we will see you in again soon! :-)

Amazing site

We had a wonderful time staying over the New Year weekend. Our stay was made extra special by the extremely friendly and welcoming people who run the site and fishery. The owners, Mandy and Ant could not have done more for us. The beautiful surroundings and the great fishing were beyond expectation too. Great food is served at the nice cafe on site. Also on site is a very well stocked tackle shop in case you forget anything for the lakeside. John, who resides on site and other staff at the shop including Mandy and Ant’s son (who’s name escapes me, sorry) are on hand to give great advice about the fishing, should you want it. All the fish caught during our stay were sizeable and in exceptionally good condition. They were specimens the like of which one sees in the pages of a well illustrated fishing book. There are good facilities with toilets and showers which are kept spotlessly clean. New year was made extra special with great fireworks and fun. All in all, wether you like fishing or not, this is a lovely place to stay. Jackie and Clive (A.K.A. Alf🤣)

A handy stopover

This is a lovely little site and very handy for me as a one night stopover on way to Sussex. Although a longer stay would definitely be welcome. The site itself is more like the car park to the fisheries and on first sight could be a bit off-putting. Vans are pitched a bit too close together for my liking, but are all lakeside which makes a lovely outlook. The owners are absolutely delightful and very friendly and attentive - I got offered a cup of tea upon arrival which, I think is a first. The lakeside cafe is lovely and a big bonus and the breakfast was superb. This all makes up for the slight negatives. The toilet is adequate and the shower is very basic and could do with a bigger space, but at the end of the day, it was a nice hot shower and that is a bonus for a CL and there are plans to enhance the shower at some stage. Overall it is a lovely peaceful place for one night or a few days peace and tranquility. Thank you Ray and Vanessa for looking after me.

A Fishy Business

Just spent six nights at this tranquil site. Ray and Venessa James, the new owners are a lovely couple. warm and friendly and keen to develop the caravan side of the business. As the name suggests, the place is predominantly a fishing venue consisting of a number of lakes as well as a stocked tackle shop and lakeside coffee shop with five hard standing lakeside pitched each with electric hookup. The facilities if basic, consisting of a separate male and female toilet and one disabled toilet and one shower cubicle, are spotless and the James have plans to improve these facilities. The site itself is a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing place, full of wildlife just outside your window. Just sitting, listening to the birds sing and watching all the different species come and go or the fish rising is just heavenly. Yes, we loved the place. If you fancy slightly more activity, why not fish or take a stroll around the site. Off site, you're only an easy short distance from the A36 Salisbury road or M27, so in easy reach of somewhere that will interest you. This site is well worth considering even as an overnight holt but I'm sure you'd want to stay longer.

Some good points and some bad points

The good points:  lovely peaceful setting alongside the fishing lakes which cannot be faulted if you accept it is a fishery and fisherman will at times walk over your pitch. It is very well kept and a delightful place to relax. However for us the not so good points outweigh the good and this will be our first and last visit. The not so good points: The pitching for the lakeside pitches was very tight to say the least and although pitches were marked there was certainly less than 5 metres between units during our visit The facilities although kept clean the shower especially is very dated, cramped and in need of updating to justify the cost of staying at this CL. There appears to be no designated area for disposal of grey waste but the thing that discouraged us most of all from returning is the cost  - £22.00 a night including EHU I think is far too high a price for a CL with such  outdated facilities however pleasant a spot it is!

My favourite CL

My wife and I first stayed here in 2004 and have returned several times since.  Last year my wife died so I went alone to see if I could still caravan on my own.  I was made very welcome as always and managed to spend 2 weeks which gave me plenty of time to reflect and decide that yes I can do it alone. I have visited several CL's in the past but for me this is the best.

Great site, very quiet.

A lovely little site with perfect place for the caravan. We looked directly over the lakes with only two other caravans around us. Great if you want your own space. Access to the site is easy and we were made very welcome by mine hosts (even offered a cup of tea). Toilet block could do with a bit of TLC. Security of the site is good with the main gates being closed at 7pm, so you know no unwelcome visitors/arrivals after then. Some lovely walks along the river bank. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a quiet stay with no hassle.
