Friendly stopover

We have just had our second visit to Cheltenham and enjoyed it as much as our first. The wardens are always happy, willing to help and keep the place spotless. It has great views over the racecourse and has easy access to the park and ride into Cheltenham. The town has great restaurants and pubs along with good shops and other attractions. Well worth a little visit.

Not your usual site

We have stayed here a few times and whilst its not your usual site its an excellent base for visiting Cheltenham and riding the GWSR, You can easily walk or catch the bus from the Park & Ride into Cheltenham, and the GWSR station is a short walk away, as is a shop if you need the basics. Regarding the comment being unwelcoming for families it's not a site for young children as there is no play area and its an open site with few clearly defined pitches. So maybe designating it an adult only site is a good idea. The facilities are good, but leveling blocks are essential.

Unwelcoming for families

We stayed here recently with our 9 year girl and six year old boy. We were made to feel very unwelcome by the people staying there (not the people who were running the site) who tended to be older than us. Our children were shouted at constantly for riding their bikes around the site by one man from the door way of his caravan and also got told off for playing with a small bouncy ball by another. It frightened him so much that my 6 year old refused to leave the motor home. The atmosphere ruined the weekend for us which was a shame as we were looking forward to going to the local food festival. My advice would be to make this adult only if the type of people we encounted are regulars.

Peace and quiet, nice stay

Nice facilities, good quality and clean. You'll need levelling blocks. Great views, and we walked up to the GWSR station for an outing on a steam train. Right next to park and ride for buses into Cheltenham.

Enjoy staying somewhere different!

Inexpensive, different, relaxed and terrific views. Yes you need levelling blocks and the non grass pitches are on what could be described as an asphalt car park but the facilities are clean and modern, the wardens all lovely and the views are stunning. You may need a longer rather than shorter hook up cable We were right by the race track and had a great stay. The weather was glorious but had it been wet, at least you wouldn’t be walking mud into your caravan or motorhome. Plenty of space between pitches and set out in such a way that you all get the view of the racecourse from the lower pitches. We took the bus into Cheltenham from the park and ride site opposite the site. Cheltenham is great for shopping and sight seeing, lots to do and some very nice dog friendly eating places too. Would happily have stayed a little longer than the 3 nights we booked if we had been able to. Looking forward to returning for a bit more retail therapy and relaxation.

Cheltenham Race Course

An inexpensive overnight stay here on a non EHU pitch proved to be a good choice. Most of the non EHU pitches are down by the rails so have an excellent view over the race course and the Cotswolds escarpment. There are also glimpses of the newly opened popular steam railway running from a nearby station (easy walking distance) where the train runs to Broadway. The race course itself is immaculate and the site is well away from traffic but expect noise on race days. There is a good park nearby with the old pump rooms where you can walk to town or easily catch a bus. Cheltenham is very pleasant but we missed out on seeing it this time. Spacious facilities on site although the motorhome emptying point is small and awkward. The site isn't easy for dog owners as it's well inside the race course but for a short stop we managed.

OK For Overnight Stay

First visit here, stopped over one night on 17th May before moving on to Somerset. Arrived late afternoon to be stopped by race course security checking that we were Club members and not Travellers which set the tone somewhat! We were expecting a carpark but surprised that most pitches slopped in two directions and then we had to hunt the hook up. Shower and toilets clean but old, basic and draughty. No wifi available. Don’t think we will choose to return.

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review and we are sorry to read you did not enjoy your stay. We wanted to advise that the travellers on the adjacent car park are no longer there. With regards to your feedback about the site this has been forwarded to the Sites Operations team. We hope that you do come back to visit again soon as Cheltenham Racecourse is in a superb location just one and half miles from Cheltenham town and there is regular transport into town via the park and ride. The site is also just a short walk away from the GWST steam train station and, as you can see from previous reviews, has often been complimented for its clean facilities, friendly site staff and fantastic views.

Travellers on Adjacent Car Park ruined our stay.

Some pitches back onto a jockey club car park and park-and-ride site that has free access to travellers. My car and caravan was damaged by stones thrown over the fence from this car park. Fence was down in one place and travellers children were seen to have climbed over. Therefore the security of the site is pretty poor IMHO. Local council apprently do not want to put height restrictions on the car park access and local police closed the file with no action. Site owner is apparently well aware of the issue. Shame, as it's really handy for the town and a good enroute stop-over point. Would only use again in a dire emergency but would keep well away from the top of the site.

Fabulous Location but..........

Whilst the location and staff were good, the length of grass on the pitches was a significant issue and whilst we had fabulous weather, because the grass resembled more like a field, it remained wet. Visited a number sites over the last few weeks and all were able to present excellent pitches. In fact the rest of the site and race course looked fabulous so I was not sure why the grass pitches could not be presented in the same manner? The showers are old and dated, although very clean the water temperature was not consistent and therefore unacceptable given what we should expect. Finally, discovered at 8:30am on one morning no toilet paper in one of the cubicles...........very unhappy. Moved onto another site and was presented with an excellent pitch with well cut grass and superb facilities, hot showers and plenty of loo roll! Shame because the location and many other aspects of this site are good. Visited 3rd May and left Sunday 6th weather was fabulous and grass was still uncut and very long....
