Gem of a site

This is an absolute Gem of a site! Just come back from a brilliant week here, was so good we stayed an extra night! Had read mixed reviews from last year and let me say so glad I didn't take any notice as we would have missed out!. We have been to many, many sites and this is without doubt one of the best. The bathrooms, showers & utility rooms are immaculate, modern and spotless, definitely 5 star. The pitches are spacious and well laid out with gorgeous views of Harlech Castle and the whole site is really well maintained. Great play area/park for kids. You have the beautiful beach (stunning sunsets to be seen from here) 5 minutes’ walk one way and 5 minutes the other way a well-stocked mini supermarket. Another bonus is its a great hub to visit all the fantastic places Gwynedd has to offer, Snowdonia national park, Ffestiniog Railway and all the other fab beaches along the coast. The new management Kayleigh and her team do a brilliant job and welcome you with a smile, they all go above and beyond to help you and the site is a credit to them all. We will definitely be back next year!.

Super break - but nearly cancelled!

Having just returned from a most pleasant first stay at this site, a holiday we nearly cancelled! Let me explain, having booked our stay I revisited the site details and read some very negative reviews, which made us think we had made a dreadful mistake. But fortunately some very good reviews suggested we would like Min Y Don after all, so we stuck with our booking. After a very pleasant booking in procedure by welcoming and friendly staff, you drive through a holiday park area before arriving at the touring site. This holiday park area is first class and the grounds are immaculate. The touring area is laid out in a series of cul-de-sacs, but as you have been allocated a pitch, this is not a problem. Between each pitch is 5 meters of grass plus hard standing (very sad - I measured it!) equal to if not greater than some club sites. One review suggested it is not really a fully serviced site as the service water points are the wrong side of the caravan and at some distance. Not a problem - I invested £38.00 on a water extension pipe. Arriving at your pitch, you are required to park the off side caravan corner next to the service point bollard, just as you would with the club pegs. The service point bollards - water/electricity and waste were perfect, well designed and worth copying, and surprise - right next to my caravan, any one want an extension pipe!! The toilet block is huge, immaculate with fresh flowers (in the gents) and spotless. A good design idea - these large blocks can be divided in two equal longitudinal parts for cleaning or reduced usage times - so no closure for cleaning. The Elsan emptying room was a revelation - stainless steel work station, spray head, wash hand basin, hand towels, soap and spotlessly clean. Now there were some down sides, one was the drive from the South through Barmouth - this was a bit hairy with the caravan. Shopping was interesting - two small but well stocked convenience shops locally with the nearest supermarket 10 miles or 20 minutes away - and this superstore was let's say interesting! And finally after checking every touring pitch, I did find some with shared service bollards (2 vans per bollard) where longer service leads/pipes would be required. This affected 22 pitches out of the 100 pitches available. These were at the very end of the site next to the dog walking area - so avoid these if you have not got long enough supply leads. Anyway - would we come again - definitely!

Lovely site

Lovely site, all motorhome amenities. Ehu, water, disposal. But nothing else. Not worth the price paid.

Would not recommend

Great location, close to the beach, beautiful views of the castle. However I would not recommend the site. On a positive note the site is immaculate and although only one shower block the facilities at the block are excellent. The water tap is the other side of the caravan which does not reach which is not ideal and only one chemical waste point for the site, therefore not really fully serviced site. The whole site is very regimental from the rows of caravans, the dog walk ( a small field in a circle ) and patronising rule book full of rules and regulations which are not required at other successfully run sites. Another gripe I have is the swipe system in place requiring a £10 deposit, I understand this is to ensure the return of the card and the budget required to replace these and for maintaining the system, I left my card in the shower block on day one of arrival and was informed I was to forfeit my £10, come on Min - Y - Don I am sure you could honour the odd genuine lost card £10 due to the high nightly fee you receive to ensure good customer satisfaction. I do not complain lightly but Love2stay / Min - Y Don need to take some of the constructive criticism on board to encourage the return of content customers.

I would only go back if Geillylydan was full up!

There is no doubt that this is a nice looking site, and some money has definitely been spent on it, but I didn't like it very much and would try not to use it again. The Good points: Close to Harlech Beach The Toilet and Shower Block were apparently immaculate A Good Children's play area. The Bad Points: There is no one way system, so one central road goes up the middle, and the touring area consists of spurs off this road, which are all cul de sacs. The central road gets very busy with pedestrians, who do not seem in the least bit keen to accommodate vehicles. The road is nice and flat, yet even with the slightest rain large puddles appear that you have to negotiate on foot if you want to go to the toilet block. There is only 1 toilet block and 1 chemical point on the whole site, and this can be quite a walk. The pitches are far too close together and small. You have to park your car in front of the caravan. I like my car, but I prefer a view of the Welsh countryside when I drink my wine! They claim that the pitches are all serviced, well I suppose on paper they are, but: The water tap is on the back of the electrical supply post (I'm surprised that's allowed), but that is the door side of a UK caravan. Our caravan, and most others I've noticed have their water intake on the other side. This meant that my hosepipe was not long enough. I bought another cheap one and connected them, they just reached when combined. The quality of the hard standing isn't as good as Club pitches. Too many great chunks of rock, or nothing at all! The noise was unbearable. It was school holidays, but the other people's kids were still screaming at the tops of their voices at gone 11pm. This would not happen on a CC site. We have children too, and they enjoy themselves having fun, but not at the expense of others. To get to the touring section you have to go through a large static area. Basically they have crammed far too much into this piece of land. The A496 is not a very nice road for towing, there are walls at either side, and or jagged rocks exposed. My advice would be to try to avoid it. On the way back we turned off for Porthmadog via the new bridge, and then turned right onto the A487, this cut out the worst of the A496 and didn't take any longer. We only had one key card, which you had to have, even if you didn't want to use the toilets. The "Welcome" pack was just some rules and a whole pile of adverts. The communal style wash basins were not a hit in the toilet block. Caravan Club - Please do not use this site as inspiration for new sites. The dragon picture shown on the website isn't even on Min Y Don, it's on Castle Point, which is next door! Min Y Don has a similar statue, but it's a Griffin.

Would not visit again

The site uses a card swipe system - only one card is supplied and it is needed for everything- even the dish wash and toilet disposal. Why? Most irritating. The door into the dish wash is difficult to open, there are 3 sinks in a small space and it is very cramped. The showers/toilets are clean, but have the dreaded push buttons. The temperature is pre set and was not really warm enough for our October visit. There were only 2 showers in use, which meant queuing. There are no privacy cubicles, just a row of communal wash basins. The push button taps have a fine spray of luke warm water and it takes ages to fill a small basin. The lights are on timer, which is not long enough, in the gents shower was plunged into darkness numerous times and needed to open door to re activate. Depending on your pitch, it can be a considerable distance from the facilities. The pitches are in regimented rows and very close together. Although hard standing, there is a strip of grass in front of each unit that you have to walk and drive over to reach your unit. Large puddles collect on the roadway after any rain that you have to paddle through to reach the facilities. The site is poster mad- 21 on the board by the ladies, 21 by the gents and more in the dish wash. Mostly rules and mostly unnecessary. On arrival, we were given a large "Welcome" folder. However, it contained mostly rules and regs. Any useful information could have been printed on a small leaflet. The site has a very large number of statics, which you have to drive or walk through to reach the touring area. It is a very steep walk up to Harlech, which is a small place and rather run down. Not worth the steep climb, unless to visit the castle ruins. We could not recommend this site and would not visit again.

Just falls short of being perfect

A lot of money has been invested in this site. The facilities block is suberb (if only the radio could be turned off). The pitches are excellent with good services but why leave 3 metres of wet grass between each pitch and the roadway. The roadways are smooth and level but just a small shower leaves enormous puddles that you have to wade through to get to the super loo. Harlech is well worth a visit despite the steep uphill walk. A walk on the beautiful beach is essential.

Very smart site in good location BUT!

This is an excellent site in terms of facilities and location - the amenity block is to die for! But there is a problem - the so called hard standings are not club standard. For the first time in 34 years of caravanning we had to take down our awning at 10 o'clock at night when the wind (which was not that strong) got into the awning. All the pegs had been loosened - this despite my best efforts in using all manner of pegs from standard tent pegs to the heaviest duty available. The reason is that the hard standings are no more than gravel spread over sand. So whilst a super site do not attempt to use an awning if there is any chance of a bit of wind - quite likely as this is a site situated 15 minutes walk from a beach.

Fab fab fab

Well, fab site, the pitches are set apart, but very close back to back. Still the hedge gives some privacy. Parking up is tight, leaving too. Overall we have had less space at Club sites. We booked the massive private room, a bath, shower, loo and basin. Worth the extra, gives some drying room too :) This is yours, and yours alone, its not shared. You can leave stuff in there without worry. It is behind a front door that auto closes, and then you have other doors. that also close immediately. Even if people follow you in they cannot get into your room. Our card gave access to two rooms. The full bathroom and a shower room, same as the first but no bath. Its a £10 for a key card. You get use to having to take a card everywhere. Stops beach goers using the site. Loos fab, new spotless, well cleaned. Cassette loo section spotless also. Wash ups ok come with bowls. Dog walk has a graveled path and plenty of poo bins. Great play ground and foot ball pitch, plus extra space also. Pitch well drained, the ground being sand is soft. The hard pitch needs super long gravel pegs to make any difference, normal gravel pegs had no effect. Almost feel the hard standing pitches need recompacting? Wind our week was from the south, persistent. You need to go prepared with storm ties, the site is exposed. We were very lucky with the weather, but the site dries quickly. Very handy for the beach 10mins, the castle 15mins, the shop 5mins. Harlech has a nice sweet shop, a great anything you need shop, the Indian we didn't try, but the Restaurant The Plas, is a must. Up passed the castle, turn on to the highstreet and its opposite the cafe and shops set back in the square. Here you get great food and if early enough a table with fab views :) We did the Steam railway up to Snowdon, booked ahead before the holiday, same for the Deep mine, both fab. Portmerion we booked ahead for ease, the ticket was valid for 31days after your chosen start date. Harlech and Criccketh castles, Barmouth for crabbing(watch your tides), amusements, bumper cars and fish and chips. Criccketh was £1 parking :) Most parking machines and the site washing/dryers only accept the new £1 coin. A great break, we'd come back but there are other places to go. Cannot fault this site, the people, staff or the facilities. Get what you pay for, as it is a bit pricey, but then you can pay£2 night and stay in a cow field, or stay here in total comfort, your call. Roads can be narrow, so care required when towing. Nice touch with the goodie bags for the kids on leaving.
