Excellent

Beautiful site.owners very pleasant and helpful, facilities very very clean toilets shower etc top marks  Only downside to me was how ignorant some dog owners are how they allow there dogs to bark and bark and bark if it had not been for this my weekend break would have been top notch but this does not have any affect on the site or owners  Would definetly be returning Richmond and its surroundings are beautiful

Fantastic site

It's being a great year at hargill house. It never lets you down for friendly service and welcoming. The wardens are a credit to the caravan club, for the service they provide and how they keep the site up to a very high standard and clean, it makes you feel safe and know that there is no problem about going off site and leaving the caravan unattended. We have going there for several years and this year has being one of the best thanks.

Staff

A lovely site, easy to find and in good order. Was not impressed by one member of staff who needs some people skill training. Laying down the law about no awning and awning pitches. Could have done it without the song and dance.

Comment from The Club

Many thanks for leaving a review.  I have been in touch with the wardens at the site who explained that they were on their knees weeding by hand a non awning pitch marked by a blue peg when you arrived on site.  My understanding is that you were given a site map which highlighted at least 10 available awning pitches (marked by white pegs)  for you to choose from and looking at records this is the type of pitch you tend to favour.  However, after driving round the site you wanted to pitch on the one that the warden was working on which stopped the work in hand despite the fact that the adjacent pitch was also available.  This point was raised in a professional manner when you came back in the office.  Our wardens are very keen to keep the site looking in good condition and take a huge amount of pride in its appearance and you can see this reflected in the many splendid comments they have received in other reviews.  Thanks again for leaving a review.

Convenient Break

We have used this site a few times and have had pleasant stays each time. This time the weather left a bit to be desired but being on hard standing this was not a problem, quiet mornings the out and about when it faired up. The site is reasonably well laid out but beware of the grass pitches on the level of the loo block, the slope is deceptive, caught us out last time, could not open the door so had to re-pitch a few feet lower on the slope. The only downside from our perspective is the road noise from the A66 which is a very busy trunk road. at 04:00 one morning I am convinced a lorry driver knows the site it there and blew his horn about 6 times in quick succession!! The site is well situated for lots of things to do and if it is wet there are two large caravan sales sites at Catterick to go and drool over the new vans, or buy extra's that you probably do not need. On the whole a lovely site and we will certainly return again.

A Yorkshire Gem

This is a lovely site nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire dales and one of the prettiest CC sites I can recall visiting. It is made especially attractive by little touches here and there added by the wardens: a little cluster of lights, ornaments and plants carefully constructed near a service point, a bird feeding station near reception, pretty butterflies, well-kept grass, good hard standings and more. What I loved was the glorious open aspect so very rare on club sites. There are a few well positioned trees but for the most part the southerly aspect, towards which the site gently slopes, is open and affords lovely views towards Richmond just four miles away. How refreshing this is. Would that one could say this about more sites. The wardens were among the most affable, helpful, co-operative and approachable I have known and they clearly take pride in their site and with good reason. This is a Yorkshire gem. The A66, the busy trans-Pennine trunk road, is adjacent to the northern edge of the site. This much is obvious from these pages so why people go there and then make a song and dance about the noise I cannot fathom. For myself, these things do not trouble me at all. A barking dog is way more disturbing in my view. But we’re all different so if you would hate this type of noise do not come here. Actually, I was about half way down the site from the road and the noise was not exceptionally noticeable especially at night. I imagine that if you went to the bottom of the site you would hear very little. There is a bus outside the gate to Richmond or Darlington; it’s not very frequent but is excellent for a two or four hour visit to either town if you are a motorhomer without a car. Other than that, it’s not really a great site for those in a motorhome for a long stay. There are no obvious walks; you can’t walk the local roads safely and the bus is limiting if you want to go further than the aforementioned towns. There are opportunities for cyclists, but the hills are challenging. I cycled to Richmond but ideally it requires greater fitness than I possess. Motorhomers will need levelling blocks as, the site being on a constant slope, many pitches suffer from a tendency to waver from the horizontal; but that’s why we have blocks. TV reception was adequate when I expected it to be bad and the wifi was good; I could log onto my office machine for an hour’s essential work – something one is rarely able to do effectively from CC wifi enabled sites. Nothing is perfect and my criticisms are that there are insufficient service points and the toilet block is not ideally situated. It’s a lengthy uphill walk to both if you are at the bottom of the site. There are four nose to tail pitches on tarmac. I wouldn’t want to find myself on one of them. I note that there is some structural work going on over the winter. Perhaps that will negate some of these criticisms. On the whole a lovely, very well kept and very friendly and welcoming site.

unhelpful warden

Felt vulnerable in ladies loos as no outside lock on door which backs on to a hedge & is out of view. Warden could have been more helpful & understanding & needs to listen!

Comment from The Club

Many thanks for your review.  I have been in touch with the Wardens at the site who advise that the main entrance to the ladies toilet block is well lit and regularly used and perfectly safe.  However, there is an unofficial short cut round the back of the toilet block which some members choose to use.  It backs onto a hedge and members are not encouraged to use this route as it is not well lit. This shortcut is being closed off in the winter during the refurbishment.   Our wardens work extremely hard to be helpful and informative and to ensure everyone’s safety and they encourage members to raise any issues whilst on site which gives them the opportunity to address concerns. Regrettably on this occasion this concern was not raised at the time.  Thanks again for leaving a review

Forthill Caravaner

The site situation was ideal for us to take a rest on our journey south.  As my husband is disabled he had to take a long detour to the toilet block to avoid steps. The toilet block is tucked away in a corner and I thought it rather isolated visiting at night as there is no key system in place. The wardens could not have been more friendly and helpful.

Excellent

Have just returned from an annual three week stay at Hargill. This is one of the best sites on the network which, along with the outstanding views, is down to the first class wardens, Mary and Harry, who look after the day to day running of the site. The facilities are spotlessly clean as is the rest of the site.Already looking forward to next years visit.

Another enjoyable stay

This is the fifth occasion we have stayed on this site. It is very friendly and relaxed which due to the layout gives the impression of being quite small and uncluttered. The views are highly impressive but above all is the location and convenience. Richmond 6 mins away with Swaledale Reeth a pleasant drive and Barnard Castle about 10 min drive.  The toilet block will be modernised this winter and there is no doubt my wife and I will return for another short break of 4/5 days. For those sensitive to noise you can hear background traffic from the A66. This does not bother us and you can never hear traffic noise inside the caravan. Hope this helps.
