First experience of caravan and motorhome club sites

This was our first experience of the club and we weren't disappointed. We only stayed one night and had a very warm welcome from the staff who also helped us 'newbies' sort out our electric hook up. We were given an option of pitches with advice on the pros and cons of each and were pleased with the grass pitch on the same level as reception (other have commented on pitches sloping so we arrived armed with tyre wedges which were useful). The pitches further up site may well suffer from vehicle noise on the A66 although they are well screened by mature trees. Facilities are very modern and immaculately clean. While there is little to do in walking distance of the site it would be a great base to visit the area or as an overnight stop while travelling through the country being so close to the A66 and A1.

Perfect as a stop-over (but that's all)

First the Positives: This is a beautifully landscaped site, maintained immaculately, with clean and modern facilities and (when we were there) very friendly relief wardens. Everything that you would expect from a CAMC site. It has great views and it's very handily placed, not far from the A1(M). However: If you are in a motorhome, be aware that you will be effectively trapped on site, unless you choose to drive off somewhere in your van. There is a footpath outside the site signposted to Melsonby, which requires you to take your life in your hands crossing the A66 (dual carriageway), yet just 200 metres the other side of the A66 the footpath abruptly ends. Instead we tried to walk down the road to the village of Gilling West except the verges are not maintained, they are totally overgrown, making any walk there totally hazardous. The "Dog Walk" onsite is about the width of a skittle alley and should really be renamed "Dog Toilet". The first thing I had to do was pick up after other (inconsiderate) dog owners! So, given the lack of dog walking either on or offsite, if you have an active dog you really should find somewhere more appropriate to stay! The site is on quite a slope. The hardstanding pitches all look nice and level. But if you arrive at 1pm in a motorhome you are likely to be assigned a sloping grassy pitch (and as mentioned in other reviews there is no negotiation on this) so be prepared and bring ramps with you! Also as mentioned on other reviews the site is adjacent to the A66, and the road noise is incessant. So be prepared and take some sleeping pills and earplugs with you!

Lovely Place for a Break

We had a lovely time at Hargill House, what a hidden gem. The wardens are so hardworking, always on call, never seem to stop, but have time to chat and help anyone that needs support or advice. Yes, you can hear the road as others have mentioned but while we could hear it it never disturbed our sleep, we were there at harvest time and the tractors did disturb the day time tranquility at times, but that is a part of country life. The views are terrific, never fail to please. The location is one that you really do need a car to get anywhere, there s only one walk and that is along the bridal path which takes you across the A66 - take your life in your hands. The positives more than outweigh the negatives, we will be back.

Beautiful site in the North Yorkshire Dales

We had a lovely 9 night stay here. We had slight reservations about the pitch we might be allocated but when we arrived were pleased with it. Janet and Phil made every effort to make us feel at home, and they ensured our stay was a nice one, even when we ran out of gas they came to the rescue! Nothing was too much trouble. The site is immaculate, it is central to get to many places, and the views are beautiful and the rabbits (which are quite tame), were delightful. I can see why some people are not happy about being able to choose a pitch because this is usual CMHC protocol, but the site isn't the usual layout compared to most of the sites we've stayed on. There are varying sized pitches and some pitches simply wouldn't be able to accommodate a large set up like ours, so I see why it is necessary that pitches are allocated. The negatives are that it is very close to the A66 and road heading into Gilling West. If you want total peace and quiet then this isn't the site for you. We live quite close to the M62 so the road noise didn't put us off, but it might some people. Also the site is on a slope and some pitches would need ramps to level off your unit. This won't put us off returning though.

Spoilt by pre-allocated pitches

We love this site which is beautifully maintained site with stunning views. Yes there’s noise from the A66 but that doesn’t spoil it for us. It’s in an ideal spot for the road networks in all directions. Only one thing spoilt our last two visits - the wardens pre allocating your pitch and there’s no negotiation. On arrival a couple of weeks ago we were told there was limited pitches, told which was our pitch and to go back to the office an hour to an hour and a half later and pay. The pitch allocated was not level and we needed to lift the door side up quite some distance which proved difficult for my disabled husband and our dog to get in and out the caravan as our step was not high enough. We were also some distance from waste, water and toilet emptying facilities. There were other pitches that were not occupied for 2 of our 4 day stay which were more suitable but that was not an option from the wardens. Choosing the rights site is imperative for us but not an option here. Disappointed.

Our Number 1 site

We have stayed on this site several times and enjoyed it. This time we stayed from 11th july to the 19th July. When we arrived, Phil and Janet, asked if we wanted a Grass or Hard standing pitch. We chose the Hard Standing due to my condition. They allocated us a wonderfull pitch, where we could view the hills in the distance and had a wonderful view of the Sunset in the evening. They and the Relief wardens could not have been more helpfull and i can only think those who have given bad reviews might have a personality problem. They went down the site and checked to see that people had settled into their pitch They are very strrct on the Club Rules and they need to be because some members seem to think the rules do not apply to them. We are going back on 3rd September for another eight nights and we know we are going to enjoy it. Yes there is some noise from the A66, but they didn't put the site there.

A one night stop

We used this site as a one night stop on our way from the south east to Scotland. The site is well located for this, though consequently, there is some traffic noise from the A66. Stunning view from the motorhome though. Having read some of the recent reviews, we visited at the start of July and were not allocated a pitch as such. We were offered a grass pitch, once it had been checked to establish if it was sufficiently dry. And our neighbour was assisted with additional blocks due to the slope of the land. There were hardstandings available and we were not offered one of these but we were not unhappy about this as we were just using the site as an overnight stop. Personally we found the wardens very welcoming and friendly.

Staying Again

We love this site as its so easy to get to many places of interest that we have after never ran out of . What makes it so nice is that it is so well run by Phil and Janet who give you as much help that you need or ask for or leave you to enjoy yourself. I wish we could find more site wardens like them. Having read some of the reviews that say strange things about them I cannot think we are talking about the same people. There is some noise at the top of the site but you become used to it as the day wears on so not really giving any problems unless you are a very very light sleeper. We have been to numerous sites this year when allowed and have found that our pitch had already been allocated understandable at the moment with what’s going on lets hope things can go back to normal soon. Again a lovely site to stay at and very well run…

A66 Day and Night

This was our first visit to this site, upon arrival I asked the warden if I could have a quiet pitch as I had seen the previous reviews, I was told I would hear the traffic noise no matter where we pitched up..as my allocated pitch had already been decided on the grass bank at the back of the A66, I’m afraid she didn’t even look on the booking chart to see what else was available as it turned out there were pitches away from the A66 available not good for customer relation/satisfaction. Please check your pitch allocation before booking if you are allowed the A66 at the back of the site is a 70mph dual carriageway which never lets up day or night it’s the main cross country trunking route not good for relaxing or sleeping unfortunately we shall not be returning.
