Good site?

Contrary to a previous review, Phil and Janet are not interested in good relations with their visitors. Driving tractors and making up arbitrary rules is more in their line. The Caravan Club needs to review its staff selection procedures. The site, being alongside the A66 can be noisy from 06.00 onwards so choose your pitch carefully, if you are allowed. As a stopping off point on a longer journey, the site is fine but probably not as a centre for a longer stay.

Excellent site

A lovely site with great views of the surrounding countryside. The facilities are very clean and very well managed. Janet and Phil are very welcoming and pleasant and nothing is too much trouble for them. They are doing an excellent job in difficult times - keep it up :)

Disappointed

Having visited this site several times, on my latest visit I was informed on my arrival I was on a grass pitch because larger units were arriving later and needed the hard standings. The only grass pitches available were at the top of the site next to the noisy A66. My van is 7.3m long. Several vans arrived after us and were allowed to use the hardstandings. I later spoke to the warden and he informed me they had started allocating pitches. His first reply when I told him of my disappointment was that you need to get here early to get a hard standing we arrived at 1.30pm. It soon became apparent that he didn’t want motor home’s using the grass pitches because of damage they may cause and was saving the hard standings for them. It also became apparent that I was only staying one night so it didn’t matter. If this is going to be the case in future then the booking procedure should be altered to allow standard hard standings with awning and standard grass pitch with awning so the member can choose before they arrive what type of pitch they want.

Unsuitable pitch

I stayed at this site recently and was told on arrival that my pitch had bee preselected by the warden and that there was no negotiation. This pitch was not suitable for me for personal reasons. The suitabilty of the pitch was never taken into account by the warden. I was never asked if the pitch was ok, I was told where I had to pitch in no uncertain terms. I would never stay here again.

Brilliant site.

Brilliant site, well placed wether only using it to transit travel north or south. You will miss out on a really well run site however. The wardens we found cannot do enough to help you if you only ask. Site well placed to visit quite a few really nice villages and towns. Durham itself being a great historical town and very beautiful having both a Castle and Cathedral well worth anyone’s time.

Noisy Road

The top of the site is next to the busy A66 and you can hear road noise. These top grass pitches next to the motorhome service point, require levelling blocks. We stayed previously on the lower site where it is lovely and tranquil.

A warm welcome and encouragement

A very well maintained site run by the friendly and helpful team of Janet and Phil who, though very busy over our packed-out stay, still managed the time to welcome us and offer words of encouragement and details of the local area. Having recognised our relatively newness to caravanning, they offered advice, and after directing us to a pitch which suited our requirements, popped over later to see how we were getting on. There’s some goods walking from the local village of West Gilling, which also offers two pubs for some welcome refreshment, but do check opening times first, as both pubs aren’t necessarily open on the same days. It’s also worth co-ordinating your lunchtime with the timetable of the no 29 bus to avoid the long drag back up the hill to the site. Though don’t be alarmed when the bus turns left out of the village, and do make sure to ask to be dropped off “at the layby” the other side of the A66, from which you should follow the bridleway back to the site.

Absolutely wonderful staff ⭐️

We stayed here for the late May back holiday, a family of 4 plus Grandad. On arrival and prior to arrival (we got lost) the site wardens, who we later found out where relief wardens, could not have been more helpful and accommodating. They where friendly, chatty and made the campsite have a nice warm feel. The facilities where clean and well presented, the pitches generously sized and all very well maintained. We had a fabulous stay, but really would like to praise the staff over this weekend. They knew the site well, couldn’t do more to help and also brought some chat and cheer to all the guests. Can’t wait to return ⭐️

Above and behond

We use this site regularly. Just a thank you to Janet and Phil who went out of their way when we broke down with our towing vehicle,(broken spring.) The site is utterly immaculate and nothing is too much trouble for these wardens. This site is used a lot for overnighters just passing through which puts extra work on the wardens. There is traffic noise from the A66 but this doesn't trouble us.

1st stay at Richmond

We don't normally leave a review however the warden and his wife were so pleasant and went above and beyond what is normally expected. From helping us to select a lovely pitch to being so accomodating with our grandchildren. Watched the warden help so many people pitch up, very hands on, will definitely visit again. Toilets absolutely immaculate, very family-friendly will return in the near future.
