On the doorstep of Thirsk town

Visited this entirely grass pitched site for 2 nights in September. Situated within a 5 minute walk to the centre of Thirsk, however this does mean there is a lot of traffic noise on two sides of the site throughout the day. The site underfoot feels firm so even in bad weather I would imagine drainage is good. Facilities are shared public facilities for race days so despite the cleanliness being adequate they were not to regular club standard. The 3 blue peg pitches adjacent to the racecourse rail are undoubtedly the best on site. The remaining blue peg pitches back onto a busy road so you are taking a chance if booking a blue peg pitch. Best aspect of the site is the locality to the town centre. The railway station is a 30 minute walk offering connections to York or Durham.

A Pleasant Site For A Short Stay

We last visited Thirsk 9 years ago for a night after picking up our new MH in Nottingham. Thirsk was far enough for a drive and near enough to return to the dealers if there was anything wrong. The reason for this visit was to have a security system fitted into our next MH and go further afield. We were fortunate that we asked for a pitch near the utilities block to help my wife who has health problem. We were pitched facing the racecourse on the running rail and it was wonderful. No noise from the road but I could imagine when the place is full and you are in the opposite corner of the site it will be noisy as you will be adjacent to the main road, and two supermarkets. The site is great for anything you need as Tesco and Lidl are adjacent. It is also a wee stroll to the town centre which is a lovely wee market town with plenty of individual shops not like most places with their homogeneous town centres. The facilities were great and I remember having a laugh the last visit and nothing has changed, they are obviously made for jockeys as everything is a tad tight for normal sized men. They were spotless and the shower was wonderful. I loved the poem in the men's cubicles which although I can't remember the words asked in a very nice way to clean the toilet bowl before you leave. I think this should be repeated in every C&MH club site as there are still anti-social people who seem to think leaving a mess in a toilet bowl is acceptable. Their homes must stink if they do the same there. We had a great stay at Thirsk and much thanks goes to Roger and his wife who were so helpful.

Got what I paid for

Was aware of the limitations of the site so no big surprise. Things were not as bad in my opinion as others have stated. However my big gripe, out with the control of the club, was the noise. There was significant traffic and train horn noise from early hours so the site was not peaceful. Although the toilet facilities were dated they were spotless and well looked after.

Great wee site

I’ve stayed in many club sites around the UK and find this to be a really friendly site. I use it as a stopover for 1-2 nights and always find myself chatting to several neighbours. Could be the simple layout that gets folk chatting. Great amenities. Great staff

First club stay.

After reading some of the most recent reviews I was worried this might be a bad expirence for my first club stay since joining. I arrived on site and was welcomed by the warden and his wife who were very pleasant and made us very welcome. The pitches are all grassed and fairly level. We were with another couple and we got 2 pitches together. The site was very busy and soon filled up. An ideal site for access to Thirsk with Tesco and Lidl less than 5 minutes away and the town a ten minute walk. The toilets were very clean despite previous reviews. The warden explained where we could walk the dogs and we walked round the racecourse twice. Great site for our first club visit.

This has to be one of the worst sites I've stayed on

Firstly, the positives: a very well located site very close to all the amenities Thirsk has to offer, including several supermarkets and many bars/restaurants and a petrol station. The site staff seemed to be friendly and efficient. However, it must be said that the site facilities are really poor! The toilet block is disgusting; very old fashioned, very poorly maintained and certainly not up to the standard that I would normally use. What is the Caravan Club doing being associated with such a very low standard site. I understand that the Race Course owns the caravan park, well they should start to invest some money in to improving the third class facilities. There are no hard standings and the grass pitches are becoming churned up with the recent bad weather. Furthermore, this is not a tranquil site: there is a considerable amount of road noise. I will not be returning to this site, neither could I recommend it to fellow club members.

Great value centrally located for Thirsk

Stayed here for 3 day at the end of August 2018. We were a little apprehensive after reading members reports of noise and facilities which were below standard. In my view these reports are without foundation. Yes, there is the odd noisy vehicle but the nights are very quiet. The facilities are perfectly adequate and kept very clean by a team of brilliant wardens who do make every effort to please. The grass is well mown and well drained. No boards needed under my motorhome. Thirsk is a couple of minutes away and there are buses to Northallerton, Ripon, York etc. The Herriot museum is a MUST. It took us over 2 hours to see it all and we could have stayed longer. All in all, a great site in a great location, and all for £14 per night.

Rally field and Motorhomes

This is the second time we stayed at this site. Its the first time on the rally field. My husband phoned ahead to find out if there was water available on the field and he was told yes there was. We duly arrived with no water on board to find out there was two auto stop taps with no facility to connect a hose. This is our only complaint. The wardens did explain later these are responsibility of the racecourse and there is nothing they can do about it. Lesson learned fill up your Motorhome before you arrive if you have to park on the rally field. Apart from this hiccup we enjoyed our stay and wardens were helpful and site has great access to town. Perhaps this information could be put on website

It all depends what you're looking for!

We stayed at this site in July and the purpose of our stay was to visit the Town of Thirsk. With this in mind, we thought the location was excellent and were prepared for the noise (although it wasn't intrusive). We were pitched close to the Lidl Supermarket side of the site and other than an early morning delivery there was little disturbance. The facilities, while dated, were very clean, and once I'd worked out the shower (I didn't read the notice!), the hot water temperature was good and plentiful. The grass was very well kept and looked pretty good considering the recent weather and we were on a reasonably even pitch, as were my parents in their Motorhome. There was a "disturbance" with some other guests on the Saturday night and once this was reported to the Wardens on Sunday morning they dealt with it very professionally. It's not really a site for peace and quiet, but we liked Thirsk and would visit again for the convenience of being able to walk into Town.

Value for Money

Great location for a lovely little site at a very reasonable price per night. Pretty level grass field with good facilities and excellent wardens. We were booked on the site over a period during a racing meeting so had to vacate to the rally field just around the corner. We knew this from the booking so were prepared for the temporary move. The site is ideally situated for the Market Town of Thirsk being within 5 minutes walk. Two supermarkets can be seen whilst standing on the site. The Railway station is 1.1/3 of a mile from the town and takes 20 minutes to walk. The site is ideally located as it is surrounded by some great day trips out. At the back of the site is a small road which can be noisy at times with tractors and occasional noisy exhaust pipe. The are also early morning deliveries to the supermarket close by which can be a little noisy at 5am., so don't park too close if your a light sleeper. Several members were reminded of the speed limit and several were reminded about keeping their dogs on leads - so no different to any other club site. We have visited several times and will continue to do so.
