Why stay here ...

This site boasts a fantastic location, being a stone’s throw from Biarritz and with direct access to a magnificent sandy beach. Some pitches overlook the cliffs and beach, affording spectacular views, particularly at sunset.

Although it’s busy in high season, the site is kept clean and tidy by the cheerful, friendly staff. The beach is accessed via a key card and is excellent for surfing. We do advise, however, that younger children are supervised as the waves can be high. Lifeguards are on duty over the summer.

Bidart and Biarritz can be reached on foot, by bicycle through cycle paths or via buses that run from near the campsite entrance. Naturally, surfing lessons are available at the nearby surf school and bike hire is available on site for those who want to explore from the saddle. The Spanish border is less than an hour’s drive and the enchanting resort of San Sebastián is worth the journey.

Great beachfront location with wonderful sea views but....??

Le Pavillon Royal
This was our first visit to this lovely site in the middle of June this year. On arrival we received a warm welcome from the friendly and welcoming staff who spoke very good English. The site is in a great location with direct access to the beach and fabulous views over the ocean towards northern Spain We were given a choice of two pitches at the bottom end of the site close to the gate giving direct access to the beach, neither of which was ideal, but on looking around all all of the pitches in this part of the site were small. The roads around the site were quite narrow, making access to the pitches quite difficult - thank goodness for motor movers. Expensive site - 7 nights at an average of over £34.00 per night for a fully serviced pitch. Water tap connections on all pitches seemed to be defective and leaked meaning they couldn’t be left connected. - I reported this to reception but nothing was done to rectify during our stay. The toilet facilities were strange in as much as there was one block for WC’s, separate mens and women, and about 50 yards away another block for showers and wash hand basins. On saying that they were relatively new, and well maintained although cleaning them around 8:30 / 9 o’clock in the morning seemed a little strange when they were in peak demand. The site WiFi reception was poor at best, so I was glad I was able to use my 4G data roaming connection instead. The site was not overly busy during our stay but most visitors had congregated at the beach end mainly because of the views and direct access to the beach. It is definitely a magnet for the surfing fraternity. In our opinion not a 5 star site but 5 star prices. Clearly you pay for the sea views and the location directly on the beach. Being close to the beach the site is susceptible to the prevailing westerly winds. If adverse weather was likely the security staff did come round and warn visitors and if relevant recommended taking down awnings or canopies. For us this only happened on our last night when we had already taken down our awning and were glad we did. Other than the beach, round and about there are plenty of places to visit and things to do. Biarritz is only a 15 minute drive away, the picturesque coastal towns of Bidart, and Saint Jean de Luz are also close by, both with lovely beaches. The Basque cities of Bayonne and San Sebastian (just over the border in Spain) are well worth a visit, and not forgetting the foothills of the Pyrenees just a short drive away. We shall visit this area again, but not sure if we shall stay at Pavilion Royal based purely on price and small pitches, particularly those close to the beach.

Great Stay

Le Pavillon Royal
We stayed for 20 nights and had an overall great stay. We were there in mid July. Lots of French and German families. The reception staff on our arrival were very friendly, welcoming and informative. Pitch was allocated a bit of a tight squeeze sandy pitch. There are two toilet blocks and shower blocks there is also two large washing up areas. There is also a laundry. There is a shop onsite open till 8pm where you can get fresh baguettes everyday and other groceries. There is a bar and restaurant that also does takeaway food pizza is very good. We did not use the restaurant but was always very busy. The beach is accessible from the site and is accessed with barrier card that is supplied. The beach is sandy and the waves are big good for body boarding and surfing but not great for regular swimming. There are lifeguards on duty. There is a swimming pool on site. The reception provide free bus tickets for Biarritz and Bidart they will give you advice on which buses to use in order to get to Bayonne and other places of interest. Espellett a must visit place. The site does have episodes of extreme wind however the site staff did come and warns us and other campers about securing awnings etc. There is an Intermarche supermarket and Lidl 5 mins away in the car. We would definitely stay again at this site and would recommend it. Easy access to the A63. Not far from Spanish border approx 3 hour travelling from site to Bilbao for ferry easy roads. Great drives to be had from site into Basque Country with great mountain views and drives .

5 night stay September

Le Pavillon Royal
Stayed here for 5 nights third week in September -2 adults no children. Had a lovely pitch overlooking the sea with views of the mountains in the distance. Site has a large number of pitches some better than others and we certainly had a good one. Site very popular with surfers as it has direct access to the local beach. We enjoyed our swims in the sea but you have to be aware of the surf conditions and possible undertow. Well stocked shop on site and although we didn't use the restaurant it seemed popular. Facilities clean, tidy and adequate and the staff were friendly and helpful. The area can be subject to strong winds and one night a squall suddenly sprung up with everyone scrabbling to 'batten down the hatches' thankfully it passed as quickly as it arrived. Biarritz is very close and well worth visiting - we also visited Hendaye, St Jean de Luz and Bidart. There lots of coastal walks and it's a lovely coast road to drive between St Jean and Hendaye. We did notice the main roads in the area were busy and suspect that in high season the whole area and campsite will be very busy indeed. All in all a good site and we enjoyed our stay.

One Night Stopover

Le Pavillon Royal
Stayed here for one night on 23 August. Booked a Special Pitch via the Caravan and Motorhome Club. On arrival staff didn't know anything about a Speciak Pitch. We were allocated Pitch 33. Not very good as it did not fit our Motorhome. The pitch was very muddy and backed into the road to the beach. Constant noise from gangs of youths and mopeds all night. Tried to get our pitch changed but Staff were unhelpful Restaurant was good with good atmosphere

Fabulous

Le Pavillon Royal
This is a fantastic location with direct access to the beach. Beware of the waves at high tide and use the swimming pool especially if you have young children. New this year - bar and shop renovations, introduction of a childrens club 2 mornings per week and some evening entertainment which is very low key. Traffic round the area is busy
