Outback Explorer

Days 1 – 4: UK to Darwin

Darwin isn’t just the gateway to the Northern Territory – it’s a destination worth exploring on its own. Whether you're keen to explore the culture at one of the many museums and galleries, meet a ‘Saltie’ at Crocosaurus Cove, or enjoy a sunset cruise, there are endless unforgettable experiences to choose from.

Explore Darwin’s vibrant food culture at the iconic Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, where the aroma of sizzling street food blends with laid-back tropical charm. Taste dishes inspired by bush-tucker, savour freshly caught seafood and be sure to try the local favourite – Laksa.

Days 5 - 6: Jabiru (Kakadu National Park)

Distance: 248 km / 154 miles

After collecting your motorhome and some groceries, set off on Arnhem Highway to Kakadu National Park. As you travel you will find plenty of opportunities to encounter local wildlife. Make a stop at Corroboree Billabong for a scenic boat cruise or take your adventure up a notch with an airboat safari through the Mary River wetlands—an incredible way to spot native birdlife and the iconic saltwater crocodiles basking along the riverbanks.

Kakadu, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed treasure, offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, cultural heritage and birdlife. With over 5,000 Aboriginal rock art sites, the Bininj/Mungguy people who have called Kakadu home for over 65,000 years are ready to share their ancient culture and insights into the region's dramatic seasons.

Include a stop at the Bowali Visitor Centre for refreshments and their interpretive displays. Explore Kakadu’s stunning landscape on one of the many hiking trails or enjoy a scenic flight for a bird’s eye view of Australia’s largest National Park.

Day 7: Cooinda (Kakadu National Park)

Distance: 58 km / 36 miles

Continue your journey through the Mary River and Yellow Water regions of southern Kakadu with a stop at the Warradjan Cultural Centre, where interactive exhibits and live artist demonstrations offer a deeper understanding into local Indigenous culture.

This area of the park features most swimming holes and waterfalls including Maguk, Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, Ikoymarrwa, Boulder Creek, Motor Car Falls and Kubara Pools. Relax and enjoy the scenery on an included Yellow Water Billabong cruise.

Days 8 -10: Katherine

Distance: 285 km / 178 miles

Travel south along the Kakadu Highway toward Katherine, the Northern Territory’s third-largest town. Immerse yourself in the region’s rich heritage by visiting Aboriginal-owned art galleries, catching an outback performance, or exploring the fascinating Cutta Cutta Caves nearby. A highlight of your visit includes a cultural cruise through the awe-inspiring, sacred Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.

Just over an hour further south, relax in the crystal-clear, spring-fed pools of Mataranka and Bitter Springs in Elsey National Park—perfect for a peaceful soak surrounded by nature.

Day 11: Litchfield National Park

Distance: 278 km / 172 miles

Next, journey to Litchfield National Park, renowned for its striking waterfalls and dramatic natural landscapes. On the way, stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery—an important site that commemorates the Top End’s wartime history.

Marvel at the Magnetic Termite Mounds, with towering structures over two metres high and more than a century old. Follow the Tolmer Falls loop walk to a scenic lookout, then head to Wangi Falls, where twin cascades tumble into a large, inviting swimming hole. This popular spot is perfect for a refreshing dip, with shady lawns and barbecue facilities ideal for a picnic. If you didn’t bring lunch, the nearby Wangi Falls Café offers a convenient alternative.

Set in the heart of the rainforest, Florence Falls offers a cool retreat beneath the canopy. Take in panoramic views from the lookout or explore one of the walking tracks for a different perspective of this lush area.

Day 12: Darwin

As you head north, be sure to stop at Berry Springs Nature Park, where you can unwind with a swim in its clear, spring-fed pools and enjoy a picnic in the shaded grounds. A gentle walk through the surrounding monsoon forest and woodlands offers the chance to spot local birdlife.

The final stretch along the Stuart Highway brings your unforgettable journey through the ‘Top End’ to a close. After returning your motorhome, enjoy a relaxing final night’s stay at your Darwin hotel.

Day 13: Depart Darwin

Distance: 176 km / 110 miles

Check out of your hotel and continue your journey—whether you're boarding The Ghan for a southbound rail adventure, catching a domestic flight to your next Australian destination, or heading home, the next step is entirely up to you.

Day 14: Arrive UK
