Could be better

The Knole
Nice location in the countryside just West of the NW corner of Dartmoor, with lovely views to the moor. A few words of caution, the site is £14 per night and not £12 as was advertised in the handbook, on the website and in the app. The owner has presumably contacted CAMC as the price on the website now says £14. The site is primarily grass, with only one hardstanding as afar as we could see. Much of the site is sloping and fairly wet ground after any rain. The location of the EHUs and water supply limits unit placement to a degree unless you have very long hook up leads and hoses. We managed to find a flat spot, but the people arriving after us were limited in choice of pitch. On most days I am sure it would be a peaceful and tranquil site with only the sheep and cattle disturbing the peace, but unfortunately for 2 or 3 hours of the afternoon yesterday the peace was shattered by a nearby clay pigeon shoot (I would guess).

Great CL not far away from The Granite Way cycling path

The Knole
We stayed here in the month of March not the best month of the year to visit as it had been particularly wet in previous weeks. Upon arrival at the site we had to squeeze through a maze of Motohomes who where on the hardstanding as you come through the gate .As with all motorhomes any damp patches and they get stuck. Well with 4 on the hardstanding we had the whole of the grassed area to ourselves. We towed our twin axle caravan in without a problem. Just up the road you can access the Granite Way where you can cycle up to Oakhampton on a good surfaced cycle track There are some great views along this path and the old railway carriages at Oakhampton were of great interest. The owners were very helpful full of local information This site is well worth a visit and would certainly use it again

Peaceful site

The Knole
The turn in from the signpost mentioned looks too narrow to risk towing along but don't panic as the farm really is only a hundred yards on the right. The camping field is a Pentagon shape with trees in the centre.  Currently the branches are too low to park under but Martin has plans to lop these. There are 3 electric feeds triangulated around the trees with 2 feeds on each. There's a tap in the middle too. Mavis will supply extention cables so you can park where you like. There are no marked pitches. The whole field is undulating although the part nearer the gate has been levelled and hard core put down so is the best spot for motor homes. Martin plans to do a similar area at the opposite end which is much higher currently and then grass over it to make it more pleasing. I needed my levelling blocks and some.  There are old paving slabs available that do the job. I took time choosing a levelish pitch but would have struggled with the awning too, so didn't bother as only stayed one night. Tall trees surrounding the property will shelter from wind but don't hide the wonderful view of the distant Tors of Dartmoor. The lane is extremely quiet and a short footpath/ bridleway runs from a quarter of a mile along the lane back to the road where a short walk back completed the circle for a 20mins walk suitable to let the dog off lead.  For longer walks,  drive to a parking area or the moors themselves. Town with a convenience store/pub a short drive.

Great location

The Knole
We visited in February and the site was a bit rough around the edges - grass area was very lumpy/uneven and not very well kept, but I do wonder if this was just time of year. We stuck to the grandstanding area and were the only ones there so was fine. Location is fantastic for us - good dog walking options straight from site, also some mountain biking options. Lovely little pub about a 20 min walk down to the village and a quiet ish road. Lovely view across the moor as the site is located up on a hill.

Now with hardstanding area for all year round camping

The Knole
Over the years we have stayed here and they have now added a hardstanding area, so no matter the weather our van will not get stuck. They have extra electric cables to reach this new area if you need to borrow one. Local to the site is the spectacular old railway (cycle route) between Okehampton and Lydford and it’s gorge (National Trust). There are also many local footpaths, as well as Dartmoor for serious walking. Historic Tavistock is a short drive away and is the starting point for the Drakes trail cycle track to Plymouth. The site itself is on a working farm and there were lambs and calves in surrounding paddocks. Easy, wide road to the site. Beautiful views from the site towards Dartmoor and across unspoilt countryside, oh and peace.
