Why stay here ...

This site has changed ownership and recently re-opened.  Toilet and laundry facilities have been revamped and are well looked after.  You have the choice of grass or hardstanding pitches all with electrical-hook ups available.  We are looking forward to welcoming you.

Nestled in an area of outstanding natural beauty and in an area of specific scientific interest, The Spinney sits within 50 meters of the Royal Military Canal, with a wealth of wildlife a few steps away. You can enjoy fishing, ambling along one of the many footpaths, or boating and kayaking. Surrounded by farmland we have amazing uninterrupted views of the Kent countryside. If you are into nature and the great outdoors, this is the place for you. We are right on the National Cycle network, leading through the Romney Marsh and down to the coast.

The Royal Military Canal is steeped in history, and just a short walk away you will find pillboxes dotted along the canal. As you wander along the Canal, by bearing left from the campsite, your route will take you to the small village of Bonnington, with its beautiful church sitting just off the bank. Port Lympne Zoo is approximately 3 miles from the campsite which you will be able to see in the distance, and there is also the popular seaside town of Dymchurch around 3 miles away. Dymchurch is home to many amusements, the best homemade ice cream at Ameretos I have ever tasted, fish and chips and of course wonderful seafood. From here, you can follow the coast in either direction to either New Romney or Folkestone.

Noel Coward used to only live a few houses away from the campsite and we have a photo of him sitting outside of our house along the canal, painting a picture of the Canal at Giggers Bridge.

Latest departure time is 11am and arrivals from 12 noon. We are sorry but we do not offer car charging facilities on site.

Stunning CL Site

The Spinney
We’ve just come away from 3 glorious nights stay at The Spinney (Oct ‘21). What an absolute gem of a site with Sarah and company giving us a lovely welcome (and foraged mushrooms for breakfast!!). The toilet block with one toilet and laundry facilities was spotless and very COVID safe. We generally don’t take our Motorhome out once we’re on site so cycled to Hythe, Dymchurch and even Dungeness from the site (Dungeness is a very long but flat ride. I would suggest only for fit cyclists) so easily accessible. Walking along the Military Canal is lovely too. The road alongside the site can be fairly busy morning and evening with locals going to and from work but we class sites as peaceful when it’s quiet at night time which this certainly was. Loved it!!!

A beautiful CL

The Spinney
Sarah greeted us on arrival and apologised as our pitch was blocked. We were shown an alternative pitch next door and was happy to pitch there instead. Smart meters have just been installed and you need to leave a £10 deposit for the payment card. The card has a payment of £5 on it in case you use the allocation given. We did and I am not sure how? It’s not explained how the daily allocation works and we ran out Sunday morning at 7.30 a few hours before we were due to leave. Unfortunately Sarah was unwell so we wasn’t able to find out when the system is reset. The site is well maintained and clean. If I could make one suggestion it would be to have a poop bin as dogs are more than welcome here. Unfortunately as we are light sleepers we was disturbed at 4.30 am by car doors slamming and driving off the site. For us the site was spoilt by the noise from Dog kennels up the road. There is occasional road noise but nothing that intrudes as much as the dogs barking down the road. Lovely walks nearby on the Military Canal. Just eat also deliver which is nice if you want a break from cooking. Overall a lovely site for a night or 2

Beautiful site on the edge of Romney Marsh

The Spinney
We stayed here in September for 10 nights and were made extremely welcome by Sarah and Danny who was here, there and everywhere with information and recommendations. The site access caused us no problem with an 8 metre van and 4.5 metre tow car. The site is extremely spacious, flat and with views towards Lympne Wild Life Park and Romney Marsh. The one slight downside is the road that runs past the site did generate some road noise. Sarah and her team have done a lot of work in improving the site and their hard work has paid off. For a CL, there is the addition of a toilet block (no showers) with laundry facilities which are kept clean and have hand sanitiser available. The Spinney is ideally located for visiting the southernmost reaches of Kent and is excellent value for money.

Very Popular CL

The Spinney

We only just managed to get into this very popular CL and only for 2 nights (we ideally wanted 3). We were met at the gate and shown where everything was (including Paul O'Grady's house), told about walks we could take down the canal and was then directed to our pitch at the far end of the field. The pitch afforded lovely views - but we couldn't sit outside for long because of the flies - which was a real shame. On site there is a little hut which contains a loo and a washing machine and tumble drier. The directions for use were missing, but we were told the coin box accepted £1 coins. I got my washing, selected the programme (40 degree wash), inserted the £1 - and the digital display showed my wash cycle would take 3 hrs 40 mins! We finished setting up, had some lunch then decided to go for a couple of lovely walks down both sides of the Royal Military Canal. We got back to find the washing machine unbelievably still going. In the end we had to switch it off and 2 £1 coins later I managed to drain and then spin the wash before putting it all in the drier. The whole wash/dry cost £5 - which in the grand scheme of things wasn't too bad - it just took so long. Needless to say my washing came out really clean! Sarah had some jams and chutneys in the hut which could be purchased for a donation. We bought some gooseberry jam - which was delicious. On our second day we got out on our bikes. The NCR2 is accessed a couple of miles down the road - alongside the canal. We cycled through Hythe and on to Folkestone and then up the blooming great hill to the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne - which was worth the ride - and had exceptional views over Folkstone itself. The round trip was just over 36 miles. This venture for Sarah was totally new to her. She hadn't been in the property long and by all accounts the CL was in a pretty run down state when she took over. It was obvious she had done a lot of work to have it looking as lovely as it was and she hoped the customers also enjoyed the little wild flower area in the far corner of the field. We told her we thought it was a lovely idea. On the 3rd day we had to leave so decided to visit the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway. For those with motorhomes we had no problem parking in the car park at Hythe. The first part of train journey was lovely with scenic views.  It's just a shame the whole stretch wasn't the same. We alighted at all stations - Dymchurch being our favourite destination. We went to the end of the line at Dungeness - not an awful lot to see - so we just got back on the train again and alighted at Romney Sands to sit on the pebble beach until the next train was due - there was nothing else to do there either! All in all a short and sweet visit.
