Why stay here ...

The Friars Court Island CL is the only site of its kind in Oxfordshire, located on a three-acre island with the river Thames to the south and a backwater to the north.

It's ideally situated to explore the Cotswolds, walking the Thames footpath, or simply as a place to sit, relax, and unwind while watching boats and swans drift by. It's possible to launch dinghies and paddle boards from the riverbank.

All pitches are on grass with river frontage. Fishing is permitted from the 16th June, a local rod license is required and may be purchased on arrival.

Not up to expectations

Friars Court Island
This CL did not live up to our expectations of a £12.50 per night for a non-electric site. On arrival, this CL had very long grass and, despite this being cut late on in our stay, it was still long. During the weekdays we were there, RAF planes were flying very low over the CL up to 1.00am. This island caters more for the marina than the CL and was not peaceful during the weekend period. During our 6 night stay, we did not meet the warden, and we feel that the CL is poor value for money compared with other CLs on the network, falling well below our expectations.

What a great spot

Friars Court Island
Lovely site on the banks of the Thames. Easy to find spot with a coded gate to enter. We found a spot overlooking the river as are all 5 of the pitches. We where greeted by the manager who was very pleasant.Great pub near the entrance with good food and drink, also with canoes to hire. There is another camp site on the over side of the river but this didn’t cause any noise issues. Your can cross the road and take lovely walks along the river to the locks about 30 mins away. Water and waste facilities near the entrance. Good phone and TV reception.

River Retreat

Friars Court Island
Over the years we have visited the Island CL at Friars Court many times. It never changes and we never tire returning here. The CL offers the essential basics of a CL (fresh potable water, elsan and grey water disposal, rubbish disposal and decent access) yet punches above its status owing to its location being bang on the bank of the Thames. The required essentials are impeccably maintained. The layout is informal but all caravans tend to pitch next to the river's bank which is wonderful as it is so relaxing to watch the wildlife and boats pass by. The Thames footpath runs nearby as do other footpaths. We even managed to launch our inflatable canoe from the CL. Clanfield is charming, Faringdon and Bampton are the closest locations for shops. The owner is charming and visits you to ensure you know where the facilities are located but is never intrusive. No EHU or toilets / showers, and all the better for it! The CL is firmly one of our favourites and return visits will happen!

Truly Unique

Friars Court Island
Sitting here on Friars Court Island writing this review. Late April, it's a wonderful place. We're on the CL feild but the cricket bat feild looks great too. Being pitched so close to the river is wonderful. The field is massive, plenty of room to spread out and no marked pitches. There is water, elsan and rubbish. The access to walking from the site is great and very easy, particularly if you want to pick up the Thames path. Interesting planes going over head into Brize Norton too. There is no road noise at all and everyone is very friendly. The site warden, Ian, is a lovely chap and his welcome was a very warm one. At £12.50 pn it's good value and we would definitely return and recommend visiting this unique place.
