An ideal location

When you arrive, beware, don’t turn into the first wide entrance that you come to on your right, even though our Caravan Club satnav instructed us to do just that! Drive 50 – 60 yards further on, you come to a 5 bar metal gate in a much smaller entranceway on your right, displaying the club sign to the Caravan and Motorhome site! The site has quite a significant drop running its full length & is fairly flat but not level. When set up, the low end of the caravan is quite a difference in height than the other end, although it caused us no problems. Eileen & John who own the farm are very friendly and welcoming and couldn’t be more helpful. The location of the site is lovely, we pitched our unit, adjacent to the road and yes, you can obviously hear vehicles passing by but 2 or 3 an hour, which rises to 5 or 6 in the rush hour!!! Most of the “noise” came from the adjacent fields which had large numbers of newborn lambs bleating and gambolling around! Bucolic is a word that springs to mind! We couldn’t get a television signal, which doesn’t bother us, a radio signal was fine. If you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle, you can exit with your unit at the bottom end of the site. Failing that, John is only too helpful in assisting with his Land Rover, should you require help! There are dozens of walks in this beautiful area, many can be accessed close to the site. There is a Co-op supermarket, cafés, delicatessen, restaurants, tea-room, take-aways and pubs in Coleford. One good find was an Italian restaurant called Amici. It’s on the Chepstow road, about 75 yards past the main crossroads with traffic lights, in Coleford. For good honest pub food, we found The Angel Hotel in Coleford’s Market Place (the irregular shaped roundabout with a church on it) was most value for money. For two of us a 2 course meal, tea, coffee and 3 drinks was under £35.00!!! A pensioner’s light lunch will set you back all of £5.00!!! Very good value for money. In the opposite direction is The Ostrich pub in Newland, again about 20 minutes walk from the CL, along footpaths or follow the Burial Lane, which leads straight to the pub. The Ostrich offers al a carte food but as one would expect, much more expensive. I think it relies on tourism more than locals, as generally, this is a low income area. We did eat at The Ostrich on one occasion but their prices are a third more expensive than elsewhere, on the lunchtime that we visited, soup on the menu was £8, which is a bit over the top, especially for this area! After previously spending a long 7 – 8 weeks of hard graft at home, we were exhausted and needed to get away, so we booked this site for 2 weeks of R & R in order to unwind. This fulfilled all our requirements, with ticks in all the boxes for; tranquility, peaceful, scenic, quiet and restful. Thank you Eileen and John for a delightful stay, even though it rained for a whole week! We shall return. Ray & Maggie Hutton

Lovely location

Very friendly welcome from John & Eileen who had saved us the one hard standing pitch - handy for our motorhome. Scenery/views in this location were excellent. For the fee it would have been helpful to have a toilet on site but I believe that this is now under consideration. Nice walk to local pub in nearby Newlands down the 'coffin trail'.

Great location

Just spent 5 night on this great site. Owners made us welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. Gave us information on local footpath to Coleford and best roads to use when leaving for days out. It's a working sheep farm so visitors with dogs need to ensure they are kept under control. Information shed had details of local attractions and maps. Finally the owner came to see us before we departed and thanked us for staying. Also opened the gates for an easy departure. Nice touch and we will be returning Martin

Rural peace

We booked this CL to explore the Wye Valley, and found it was a perfect base, only a few minutes drive down the hill to Redbrook. Written directions from Monmouth were supplied on request, but do NOT rely on satnav, which may take you via Symond's Yat. Friendly welcome, grass was cut, views of the lambs playing in the next field and good dog walking all around. The single track lane adjacent is so quiet, (we pitched next to it to get the best view) but Coleford with shops and facilities is only 5 minutes drive - amazing. The icing on the cake is the Ostrich pub a half hour walk or five minute drive. This ranks with the best of CLs, very friendly helpful owners, thank you, we will be back!

Excellent

I pre booked and was told that there is one hard standing pitch and the others were in a very grassy field -did I have a 4x4? Yes I have but it wasn't necessary. We arrived and found a reserved notice on the hardstanding pitch, but saying if we wanted an alternative just pick one. We chose the reserved pitch.  We were greeted when the owner arrived, very friendly and helpful. The site was one of the best we've visited. No facilities other than electric, tap and toilet disposal, but what else do you want?  Easy access to Coleford  (5 mins) but you're in the middle of very lovely countryside. Easy access to the site. Very quiet. If you want peace and quiet in the countryside with a friendly and helpful greeting book this one. ( I know some have said £15 per night is a lot for no facilities, but get a grip - this site is fantastic)

Friendly, welcoming and excellent site

This is the second time we have visited this site, both during April, and we are surprised, and saddened, at some of the negative comments. The welcome from Eileen and John could not be more friendly. Eileen makes a point of making contact asap armed with a wealth of information and knowledge of the area. There is an information shed too should you need additional info. The views from the site are delightful and relaxing - who cannot find the lambs mesmerizing to watch? The site is central to the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley so there is plenty to see. Great site; we don't mind if you don't book this gem of a site as it means we will have more chance to get in again in the future - as we all know, by leaving positive feedback, really good sites like this get booked up too soon!!

A wonderful site

Having read a number of negative comments, we thought we would redress the balance.   We spent two weeks on site in August 2015, and had a peaceful, wonderful time.  We were give a warm welcome, and it was good to renew friendship after about 10 - we were remembered as well!  Our experience was that it was quiet and peaceful, grass cut, and buzzards flying overhead.   All in all a great site to stay at and enjoy the local walks.

EXPENSIVE

We spent 5nights on this site. The owner is very helpful but that's as far as the positives go.£15 is very expensive considering there isn't even a tap at the chemical loo point. The site is overlooked by, and is in close proximity to some self catering holiday homes with some very noisy people sitting outside. The small lane which runs past the site can also be quite busy, perhaps we were just unlucky with the noise.

Comment from The Caravan Club:

Thank you for leaving a review. The CL owner has been in touch as she wishes to address your concerns. The self-catering cottages that you mention are managed by the CL owners and any guests who stay in a cottage sign a contract to, “not cause any noise to neighbours”. The noise you mention actually came from a private house that was celebrating as they had just got married, and we are very sorry that this disturbed your stay at this lovely CL Site. Please be assured this is not a regular occurrence but a one off to celebrate this special occasion.

The normally quiet lane was busy that weekend as it was the 3 day Coleford Music Festival (1 mile away). This is an annual event. During the rest of the year the lane is again quiet.

We are sorry that you do not feel the site is good value for money. The price is competitive for the area and many guests return time and time again. The CL owners have recently invested in electric hook up, secure fencing and an information hub and plan to continue to invest in the CL Site next year. We hope this helps address your concerns and thank you again for leaving a review.

Very long grass!!

We stayed for only 1 night as we wanted to do the Forest of Dean Park Run, and the CL is only a couple of miles away from the start. However, we struggled to find the site (we came from the Brecon Beacons) and once arrived no one around to tell us which pitch to use. As it was raining we pitched up and hoped it was OK. The grass is very long, and there was no info around regarding the waste/water etc. There was dog poo (the owner has a border collie that is left to run around the field unaccompanied) we didn't expect to have to wear wellies in July to avoid the poo and keep our feet dry. The cost of the CL is £15 per night, and it's the most we have paid in over 4 years of using CL's, and have enjoyed more facilities eg toilet, shower and mowed grass for much less money. The views from the site are lovely, and the nearest town has everything you need.

Comment from The Caravan Club:

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The CL owner has been in touch as she wishes to address your concerns. We are sorry to hear you could not find the site. For future reference the site directions are in the Sites Directory & Handbook and on The Club website. The farm is named on the ordnance survey map and the postcode works on sat-navs. Please note if you were still having difficulties, the CL owners would have been more than happy to help if you had called them for assistance.

The CL Owners always aim to greet guests but as you did not arrive until 9pm they were unsure if you were still coming as they had not been advised you had been delayed.

Regarding the dog mess on site, as the CL is a working sheep farm their dogs are never allowed to be unaccompanied. The dog mess may have been left by previous guests and the CL owner is very sorry that this affected your enjoyment of the site and would like to assure you that this is not normally an issue. If you had notified them, they would have been more than happy to remove the mess and offer you an alternative pitch. The price and facilities are all described on the site details page website and in the Sites Directory & Handbook and all guests are again informed when making a booking. The CL owners have recently invested in electric hook up, secure fencing and an information hub and plan to continue to invest in the CL Site next year, including the purchase of a more reliable grass cutting machine to ensure visitors have a lovely experience when on site.

As you can see from previous reviews, many people have had a wonderful experience when staying here and have very much enjoyed their stay, so we are sorry that you did not enjoy your 1 night here.
