South Port O' Spittal a Stunning CL camp site.

We have been a bit remiss for a long time. We first visited this CL when it was first opened around 18/19 years ago. We come back each year either once or twice, more if possible if possible. That may give the reader a sense of how we regard the site and owners. We have been all around the British Isles but return here more often than not. Ian Beck a busy farmer and a friendly giant of a man runs the CL. He tries to accommodate all who come to stay and will always attempt to sort out any queries or problems you may have. Ian is constantly looking to improve the facilities here. During the Covid outbreak he installed fresh water points for each pitch and these remain, making life just that bit easier and safer for all. At present he is working on updating the site showers and utilities. It should be remembered that as a farmer Ian may not always be on hand to direct you to a pitch, but there are plenty to choose from, something to suite most people. A more tranquil and quiet place in Scotland would be hard to find, with stunning views across the sea to Ireland and Belfast on clear days. There are plenty of interesting places to visit around the immediate area and either up the coast towards Ayr or further inland. There are an abundance of gardens to visit and wander around. Lots of places to eat out, some which can equal or sometimes surpass many more expensive restaurants elsewhere both in food quality and service. Portpatrick hosts a good few, as does Stranraer. Then moving just a bit up the coast at Kirkoswald there is Souter Jonnies Inn, again serving excellent food. A bit further on up the coast, Ayr boasts plenty of good shopping for those that want it. There are many more in and about the area, Newton Stewart being one and far too many more to mention. As a CL site I believe it is exceptional.

One of the best CLs we have stayed at

Lovely location, lower part flatter than the top. The showers and toilets and laundry areas, while housed in slightly decrepit buildings, seem to be under renovation and the showers are new with plenty of room and a chair - better than many campsites - and an extra for a CL! Water at each pitch is also a bonus. There is WiFi (not secure, but the only way I could do this review), my contract internet hardly worked at all. Have not seen the farmer yet, just selected a pitch and settled in about 8 hours ago, but that is not at all unusual with a CL. The price is £20 cash and is fairly normal this year when taking into consideration the facilities provided.

Left to our own devices

We had a 2 night stop here. We were notified on booking that the first night would be £20 and all subsequent nights would be £15. When we arrived we naturally assumed that the owner would come and welcome us as he was mowing the grass on the lower field - he didn't - so we just pitched up on the top level on the hardstanding. The pitch itself was on a slope (to be fair most of the hardstandings were sloping) - so we had to use our blocks. As stated in a previous review the site is split into two - hardstandings on the top level and a grassed area at the bottom. The grassed area looked to be possibly more level than the top. Both areas were in full use over the 2 days we were there. As it was obvious we weren't going to get a welcome we had to find out where everything was ourselves. Fortunately the water tap was next to the pitch, so it saved us hunting for the water source. I made a recce of the laundry room and ladies toilet block. I needed to wash out some of our cycling gear, but I opted to do it by hand as I wasn't entirely sure the laundry room was up and running - the strong winds we experienced over the 2 days we were there ensured all the washing I did dried well on our washing line. Both toilet blocks were definitely in need of some tlc. The loos were ok, but the showers left a lot to be desired - so we opted to use our own facilities. We pitched ourselves in the top corner nearest the hedge-line - and thus nearest the wind turbines. True, they were quite noisy, but not so much that it disturbed our sleep. Come the final night of our stay the owner still hadn't been to see us and as such we had no idea how he wanted payment - so I ended up texting him saying I was quite happy to pay him by BACS. He replied saying he would come round the next morning at a time convenient to us and take payment - so it was a good job we had enough cash on us. He was very amiable when he came the next morning, it was just a shame that we had to chase him in this regard. The site itself was very well maintained with lovely views - as well as having great cycling in the vicinity on the quiet country roads.

Just Beautiful

We were a little apprehensive about staying here after some of the reviews, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Fantastic location, amazing views, what more could you ask for? John met us upon arrival, as he was helping out as the owner, Ian, was away. John was very friendly and offered us a choice of pitches. I wanted to be selfish and not put a review down, as I didn’t want it booked up when we wanted to come again!, but felt I should do as it just blew me away. Thank you Ian for allowing us to share your little piece of heaven😀

Coastal delight

Excellent site tucked away in the south west corner of Scotland. Warm welcome from extremely laid back owner Ian, had total choice of pitch as only one other van on site when we arrived. Stunning views from the site across to Ireland almost parallel with Belfast where we saw a cruise ship leave through the evening haze. Well placed for touring the isle of Whithorn, the coastal route is stunning. Can thoroughly recommend this site for a warm welcome and peaceful stay. Will certainly return. Jim & Nancy & wee Bailey

Views Across the Irish Sea

We found the site after travelling along progressively smaller roads, but there are passing places. We didn't meet the owner until our last day when we contacted him about payment so it all seemed a bit laissez faire about where to park. The site seemed to be divided into two parts with hardstanding where we first drove in and then grass further down. The grass has the better views so we parked there and used our chocks. There was a laundry room which had a sign on saying it was closed although after I'd done 3 lots of handwashing I discovered it was in fact open and in use! There was also a shower room, although only one shower seemed to be in use but we used our own facilities. One of the things missing from this otherwise beautiful site, was useful and up to date signage. The owner was very friendly, when we met him. There are three wind turbines which can be quite noisy when they get going in the wind. They create a background swish a bit like helicopter rotary blades (but without the engine noise!). It wasn't too obtrusive but some people may be particularly susceptible to that kind of noise. On our second day the wind dropped so they were still, which was when we realised how much noise they'd made. From the site it is a short drive/walk/cycle to Portpatrick, Ardwell Bay and Stranraer.

Wonderful Place

If you’re looking to relax then this is the place for you but with easy access to Portpatrick where several pubs serving food can be found. All pitches had a water tap which for us is the icing on the cake. Lovely views over to Ireland and the sight of the sun shining on the sea will have you reaching for your camera. Ian the owner was friendly and helpful, the pitches were well kept and spacious. Cannot comment on facilities as didn’t use but can thoroughly recommend this little gem of a site.

Blown away

We spent 6 nights here, a fantastic site. The header refers to the weather which to be honest was bloody awful for the whole of the time we were there. Should have realised that as there are two turbines on the site there might have been an occasional bit of wind. Saying that we picked one of the hardstandings, the grass pitches were waterlogged on arrival and even more so when we left. Sat Nav took us straight to the site, the owner was away collecting sheep but called the next day to sort things out. We had the site to ourselves. Good access to all the local attractions. Covid did put a damper on things. Imagine going into a pub and not allowed a drink. Only outside by Ms Sturgeons rules. Great site, nice owners we will return.

Stunning views

Visited beginning of September. As mentioned narrow approach but wasn’t a problem. Ian was welcoming and very helpful. Grass kept well mown. Choice of hard standing or grass pitches, all with views to N Ireland. Covid precautions well thought out. We didn’t use the facilities but they were in use. Hand sanitisers provided at communal points eg water taps. Excellent value for money.

Lovely site in a great location

We spent 3 nights here and really enjoyed our stay. The site is well laid out with fantastic views, within walking distance of the nearby beach (15 minutes or so) and within driving distance of all the local places of interest. The access roads are quite narrow but it is not too far to the nearest main road, Friendly welcome from Ian, and all very relaxing. Would recommend and hope to return.
