G & Ts are ready!

Our second visit here this summer. We picked a quiet pitch next to a new and expensive looking set up with two men sat outside. After a very pleasant walk across the reservoir dam we returned to find that this had become a loud group of people drinking wine. At about 4pm, there was a shout (see title), they moved on to the gin and we moved on to another pitch at the far end of the site! Such things must be real challenge for the staff; the "party" was still going strong when we took the dog out in the evening.

Great short stay

We were originally due to stay at the Uttoxeter Racecourse site for two nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend but our booking was cancelled a few days before we were due to arrive by the CAMC due to the the security situation and the mass trespass there. Thanks to the helpfulness of CAMC customer services staff we were able to secure another booking close by at Carsington Water. We loved this site! it is very nicely situated right by the reservoir and we managed to get a lovely quiet pitch near the top of the site with plenty of privacy and space to sit outside. There is lots of woodland and trees - it reminded us of Center Parcs. One drawback would be the lack of sunshine because it is do densely wooded (there wasn't much this weekend!) but there are other areas which are more open. We enjoyed being able walk directly to the reservoir and cycle round it too. Not much time to do anything else on a two night break but we did have a drive out and came across by chance a lovely small vintage cinema in Wirksworth with a bar which was lovely. All in all a great short break not too far from home.

Good for families with noisy children

This is the first bad experience I have had at a Club site - so bad I had to leave after 1 night because the noise level was unbearable. As I wasn't offered a refund for my booked nights I feel justified in warning campers who want a relaxing break that they will not get it here. The hyperactive children who had no respect for other peoples pitches, turned the whole campsite into their adventure playground, screaming and shouting until after dark, no parents in sight. Then the next morning an extremely loud lawn mower started up. Add to this a few disgruntled dogs and you get the picture - noise, noise, noise. Also the grass pitch I was one was half mud where someone must have used a groundsheet. The pitch should have been closed until the grass had recovered. Consequently I was just bringing mud inside the caravan as I didn't want to make matters worse by putting down a ground sheet. I can't comment on the facilities as I didn't use them, feeling that no Covid precautions were being followed. I suggest, if concerned about Covid, that you take your own hand sanitizer. Such a shame. One site I won't return to.

Ideal site to explore the Peak District

We visited Carsington Water for four nights from 15th to 18th August. The location is perfect for exploring Carsington Water and the Peak District. We arrived at 13:00 and the warden met us at the parking bay before the barrier and politely confirmed our booking and membership. Payment was managed efficiently and we were free to choose our pitch. The camp is set within a pine and rowan tree plantation with pitches located in several avenues and cul de sacs. The excellent facilities are well maintained by the site staff who do their utmost to keep everything spotlessly clean and tidy. Sadly, some campers are incapable of wiping their feet before entering the toilet blocks, picking up toilet paper they have dropped on the floor, flushing the toilets and occasional dumping dog poo bags by the waste bins. The wardens must just despair. We found a pitch in what seemed a suitable position equidistant from the centrally positioned facilities and a water and waste station (of which there are several). We had just got set up when a family set up next to us. All seemed fine until the dogs emerged from the car, two pugs with the most horrible screeching barks. One immediately ran off and started fighting another dog on the other side of us and had to be pulled off, with no apology and oblivious to the concept of dog training or control. Next, two more families arrived, related to our neighbours and also with their dogs barking. Although they pitched elsewhere, base camp was next door to our ‘van and the noise continued until 22:30. Regrettably, barking dogs across the site continued to be a problem throughout our stay. Needless to say we moved pitch first thing next day after first asking the warden who was agreeable and found a near perfect spot with views of Carsington Water through the trees and quiet ! There followed three great days (and nights) walking around Carsington Water, through Dovedale, Ilam Hall Park and Wirksworth. So overall, we enjoyed our visit to Carsington Water and would return (probably during school term time). If we could request one thing of the wardens it would be to ask campers on arrival if they had dogs and impress upon them the importance of keeping them under control, including barking so that the enjoyment of others is not impacted and where necessary, take action where they are a persistent nuisance.

A delightful site

We came across this site by simply looking for inland sites near water. We had never been to the Derbyshire Dales so we were really interested to see the site, the reservoir, and the local area. The site is delightful, clean, and very spacious around individual pitches. The hosts were wonderful. The reservoir is fantastic with a walking/cycle path all round which is mainly flat but does have some ups and downs. We also made a larger cycle loop of around 25 miles taking in two old railway lines now converted to walk/cycle paths. All in all the two nights stop were excellent.

Excellent site

We stayed here for 3 nights in August. The welcome from the staff was warm and friendly; and the site is set in a beautiful; peaceful; wooded location - ideal for cyclists and walkers. Everything was spotlessly clean, with sanitiser everywhere, and lots of service points. Although the site was full, it never felt overcrowded and was always peaceful and quiet. Carsington Water itself is a mere 3 minutes drive/ 5mins cycle from the site, and is easily walkable. One of the best CAMC sites we have ever stayed at, and we would not hesitate to recommend this site.

Could be a great site!

This is a good site in an interesting location, with modern facilities and quite well maintained. During our stay the site was full (too full really) and we were pleased to be advised at Reception to go the very far end of the site. We soon found out why, the shouting and screaming around the play areas went on late. We were also shocked at the arrogant and unpleasant attitude of some of the other users for example at the washing up area, not at all the decent friendly folk we usually find on C&MC sites. The staff are fighting a losing battle when there are people on site who do not know how to flush a toilet or where used toilet paper should go and I don't envy them the job of cleaning. We will return, but not in the school holidays.

Could Do With Improvement

At the top you are requested to go to the new arrivals bay wait to be called into reception to check in.Depending on the queue including new arrivals but for the shop depends on how quickly you are called. This was classed as a family site but also peaceful & quiet. We had to go a way into the site before finding a pitch that seemed quiet. This was not the case as the children on the site were not controlled in anyway, allowed to ride bikes, scooters etc anywhere they wanted, even across your pitch, whilst yelling & screaming to each other,to make it worse they were not in our section.Noise went on until 9:30/10pm for two nights only the other night being quiet as it rained & kept them in.We left a pitch marker on our pitch. On return we stopped at the shop on site to buy ice creams. The Reception/Shop only allowed 1 person in at any time a queue formed outside which consisted of other campers as well as new arrivals,in total about 8 people,4 being children wanting ice creams. The person in the shop not only wanted to check in but sort out further dates for herself & family during August, then cancel ones that were incorrect.Having waited a good 15-20 minutes a Warden appeared, asked if she could help which was not possible.I asked why the shop could not be separated from the reception to eliminate problems only to be told in an agressive manor that it could not & they had to adhere to COVID guidelines.Fine, but when there is a store room with doors which could have been altered to form the shop it seems very stupid not to put it to use. When pointed out another Warden said he was not going to do it,was not allowed to do it & that I was only being argumentative.I suggested a summerhouse on the green opposite only to be told no not allowed to don't have the money to do it.When we got back to our pitch we found bikes & helmets over it which belonged to people visiting the caravan opposite.Nothing was said but it was clear it was our pitch they then proceeded to walk/cycle across our pitch at every given opportunity coming periously close to our vehicle with the obligatory screaming/yelling until they eventually left early evening. Was it worth complaining to the Wardens, after the reception in the afternoon NO.Children are not controlled in anyway on this site, left to do exactly as they please including chasing/frightening the rabbits & squirrels. The Wardens are nowhere to be seen apart from 2 who cut the grass/emptied bins. There was no hand santiser in the unit by the bins/drinking water/chem waste etc for 2 days. The site is in a lovely location but does give the impression nearer to Carsington Water than it actually is.The problem of the reception/shop could easily be sorted but with the attitude of the Wardens will not be as they really do not seem to care about any of the site. The facilities whilst okay at times dirty & washing up sinks had to be cleaned before use.Would we stay there again, NO is the answer.
