See you again

We had a good holiday at Hillhead even though we weren't able to have the pitch we had booked.  The staff were brilliant at sorting things out after their recent spell of rain which had left some grass pitches having to be closed.  The facilities at the site are excellent, it is extremely well laid out and the surrounding area is lovely. We used our feet and public transport (including the ferry over to Dartmouth) to get about, only going off in the car a couple of times. One day we walked from site with our dog down on to the coast path and on into Brixham; as with most of Devon, if you walk down you then have to walk back up and it took us about 3 hours, however we stopped at the cafe on Berry Head for coffee and then had a late lunch in Brixham. We caught the bus back, which dropped us at the gate of the site - a great day out. We will definitely return to this site and would recommend it to others.

If we had known

If we had known about the mudbath we may not have come here, but as it was the staff did a great job of getting us on a hardstanding which we swapped the next day for one with a sea view. They were moving people around all over doing their best to please everyone If we had known about the shop, we would not have stopped at Morrisons(other supermarkets are available). This site has a shop unlike any other club site we have been to. We only needed to bring clothes as everything else we used is stocked by this mini supermarket/caravan part outlet. The weather didn't spoil it for us. would come here again for the Dartmouth regatta

Hillhead Sept '15 review

Very pleased with the site and facilities. Loved the heated swimming pool and the cleanliness of that area. The wifi was down at the time of our visit which was unfortunate, but did not cause us too many problems. Will recommend this site to our caravanning friends.

mud bath

Lovely and clean site but pitches we were on water logged which slopped down. When I booked I ask for pitches for two small campervans with awnings and a four man tent . I would go back but will ask for better pitches next time

Great views so why hide them??

There are some lovely views of the sea/countryside from this campsite I jus can't understand why they are so hidden by bushes!! Privacy is one thing but to the extent of ruining your view.....why oh why!

WET and muddy for SOME

Treated like a second class citizen is putting it mildley Yes a lot of people were in the same position because of the wet weather some very muddy pitches but being told you cant move pitch because more people are arriving and they did, some for just a few days onto a dry hard standing and off again enjoying their stay no doubt. The caravan club let a lot members down on this site i only hope the dry pitch's were not being reserved for non members the rule of three days notice of wishing to leave or loose your money needs to be changed when the caravan club cant offer you decent facilties very poor on site descisions being made during my ten days, just spent the weekend power washing ground sheet and cleaning the mud off the awning

confusing / stressful pitch selection

our third year. our last year. Because a lot of pitches are tucked away, you are told by the wardens to walk around and 'find' the pitch you want upon your arrival. They all had different coloured pegs 'warden allocated'apparently. When i asked what this meant i was told that the bigger pitches were reserved for bigger units...okkk  why then did i see small vans without awnings on wide hardstanding pitches. we had to cram onto a small grass area with 4 pitches on it. in a motorhome with all the rain we were positively sinking! it is completely ridiculous how you are sent out to find a pitch, we saw loads and loads of people running around looking stressed and harassed, its a big site, trying to find something suitable. not a great start to your holiday. your pitch is all important and this last year was the worst pitch of all. ... the site is just too crammed

Impressed

Having just enjoyed a week at Hillhead , we found our stay pleasant and facilities excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant and food was to a good standard be it the booze kinda expensive . The shop was very well equipped with almost anything required for camping. Our pitch was number 192 which was a touch small but pitching sideways wasn't a problem at all and staff were on hand to help if a mover was not fitted . My only issue is the awful WiFi reception but saying that maybe a good thing to disconnect for the holidays .The site is excellent for families and is family orientated , I do note people complaining about noise etc but with holiday season and kids around it can be expected to somewhat lively, we do not have an issue with that . Would we re-visit? of course we will.

Could do better

Having arranged to meet up with family here at their, favourite site we were disappointed by the standards in toilet block. The site was busy as expected as it was July, but in view of the amount of wardens on site was not good to find toilets with no hand wash, empty toilet roll holders and at times so smelly that you did not want to be in there. Surely when it is busy toilet blocks should be checked during the day. Even my sister a regular visitor here was not happy.Food was adequate and not overpriced we felt.

The pitch spoilt the holiday

We have stayed at Hillhead twice now; the first time was in August 2014 the second was August 2015, both times for about 14 or so nights. Both years we booked a serviced pitch; last year we were 'given' the last serviced pitch they had – 192. We didn't like this pitch was it was a bit noisy and small and we had to pitch side on... This year we were again given the last serviced pitch they had left which was 193. This pitch was even smaller than 192 and again we had to pitch side on with the front and the side of the caravan about 3 feet from a hedge, the made the inside of the caravan very dark and it felt like a prison. Pitch 193 is also on the main road through the side so if the kids wanted to play swingball they were about a meter from the cars hurtling past. It was so noisy with site traffic; some morning’s people were driving around at 5am. The food in the clubhouse is over priced and the kids food is horrendous especially the sausages, they are like sponge. I asked what the meat content of the kids sausages were I was told 100%, I then asked for the allergen info and the sausage were actually 32% meat which is the lowest meat content allowed by law. The kid’s meals also included a nasty drink full of colourings and artificial sweeteners, I asked if they could have fresh juice instead but I was told no so we gave them water. We saw many people arriving early and walking around the site and reserving pitches with hook up cables and chairs before they booked in, I guess this is how you get a good pitch. Not really a great holiday especially for £800.
