Lovely site but a couple of niggles!

We stayed for 4 nights in our 6m motorhome. The country road which is a very sharp left from the main A590 roundabout, is tight in places and you need to thrust up the very steep incline. This incline is followed by a another sharp left followed by another steep hill to the entrance of the site. We arrived a bit early but staff were swift in getting units booked in. Our site map showed quite a few areas were not available so we drove round and picked a pitch with a reasonable view. The directory did state that there was some sloping but we were surprised just how undulating our pitch was. We tried several parking positions to level out, but it was obvious we’d need our levellers. These didn’t make much difference as not only were we sloping forward but also to the side too! This was not conducive to a goodnight’s sleep as we felt we were going head first to the side of our van. The site itself is lovely, very well laid out with dry stone walls and lovely views over the bay and beyond. Shower block/toilets were impressive and very clean, however while we were there there was no heating in the showers which was quite chilly! The country road you drive down to the site, takes about 15 minutes to walk back to the road where there is a concrete bus shelter. From here you can get the excellent X6 bus either into Grange over Sands/Ulverston or cross over the road to get the bus to Kendal. We enjoyed our stay, it’s made us realise we need higher levellers!

Never disappoints

We have been to this many times in both a caravan and our current motorhome. It is always kept beautifully clean and tidy. Staff are friendly and helpful. Its location is everything for us because we go walking along the marshes at least once in every visit. Grange, Kendal and Cartmel are not too far away and worth visiting. One thing that surprised me this time was the lack of heating in the mens shower block, particularly when it was at the coldest part of winter?

Immaculate

3 night break here in our motorhome last weekend. We did 2 walks from site, one into Grange - easy flat 3 miles one way - excellent cafes and promenade, one circular 10 mile route heading east along the estuary and looping back on the cycle route. We don't normally comment on facilities, but absolutely spotless at all times of day, a real credit to the team at Meathop, and even the grounds were maintained beautifully. Nice people too! Definitely recommend for a short break in large M/home, or longer break with off-site transport.

A lovely Lakeland site

This is a lovely site, open and spacious and plenty to do in the area. We chose to pitch at the bottom on pitch no 84 to take advantage the views. Newly refurbished shower block. It was a shame that the local road into Grange was flooded, but we will return in the spring when we know we can walk in. However there are plenty of car parks in Grange, a lovely town with a two mile walk along the prom with great views. We also drove to Cartmel, 3 miles away and had a lovely walk and stroll around the village. It’s about a 10 minute drive to the beginning of Lake Windermere, we stopped in Bowness and the drove back via Conniston. One of the highlights of our stay was being able to walk to Woodlands hotel for our evening meal. Reasonably priced good food, we ate in the Conservatory. Take a torch as the lane is dark, but great for star gazing! Also a large enclosed dog walk, always a bonus and a lovely adventure playground for children. Have to say we preferred this site to Kendal.

Quiet site (almost)

Lovely site and will visit again. However, as we were there late December wthere were few walks from the site. A drive to Arnside was well worth it and there is always Grange within easy driving distance. Two problems - central heating in shower block wasn't working (not good in December) and we were pitched (Pitch 15) near an electricity sub-satation the roof of which sounded like a bass drum as rain fell on it! Most disturbing. We'll definitely come back, but probably when it's not raining.

Just the tonic

Stayed mid-November 2021 for 9 nights. Meathop Fell is a lovely site. I found it to be quiet with pitches well laid out and spacious. The site is close enough to the M6 to be really handy and far enough from the A590 to be quiet. The road to the site from the A590 is tight but doable. Nice walk into Grange-over-Sands and a nice walk/cycle on the 70/700 cycle route that runs past the site entrance. We ate at the Commodore Inn in Grange-over-Sands one Sunday lunch and it wasn't great. Also had a meal at the Pig and Whistle in Cartmel and it was delicious. Cartmel itself is a lovely place to visit and is about 14 minutes from the site in the car via A590. For those who enjoy a good stroll I will suggest taking the walk from Harrowslack National Trust Car Park to Wray Castle (the walk took us about one and a half hours each way) along the side of Windermere. All said and done Meathop Fell is a site that I will probably go back to.

Nice well kept site.

Just returned from another short break at meathop, if you want a quiet break within reach of the lakes this site is ideal. you do need transport i would say as the main road and bus stop is about a mile away, our holiday was RUINED due to the butchers in grange over sands being shut (monday) lol, it really is that good. from grange its a 5 minute train to arnside or carry on to lancaster. The wardens do a good job of keeping check in smooth as long as members listen, facilities are kept clean and tidy as are the grounds , woodlands hotel is within walking distance ( 500m ) for drinks and food or take away. looking forward to a return visit.

Fab Views

Reviews - When I read reviews I'm looking for useful information. Meathop is quite a pretty site with some great views. It has lots of open pitches only a few dark tree ones unlike a recent review stated. All the usual great facilities which we don't need to mention. Useful, the bus stop is a bit of a walk, don't wait in the shelter, stand on the main road and put your hand up, otherwise buses will ignore you! Get a One day saver for £7.50, you can go to several places but still a limited service rather disappointing but I had already checked this prior to booking site. The lane to walk into Grange was flooded so that was not possible to do. Woodlands hotel bar, very friendly, allows dogs and had an excellent meal on last night. Dog exercise area good, 2 of them. Disappointing no circular off road walking for dogs, only a couple of linear road walks, yes quiet roads but not ideal. Would not recommend to stay for more than 3 nights if in a Motorhome.

Another Perfect Stay

I stayed here for the second time, in September. The rain was pouring down when i arrived at the same time as several other caravanners. Top marks to the staff who were fast tracking people to their pitches because of the weather and the queue to check in. Very peaceful site and the facilities were spotless. I can recommend Arnside chippy, and you can even watch the bore wave during a high tide. The woodlands hotel next to the site does a good take away too. Pity I never caught the little visitor that came into the awning every night to see what was in the bin! Got to expect that in the countryside I guess. I will hopefully be back in the not too distant future.

Restful quite vacation

My wife and I stayed here in late September, we really enjoyed our stay, we stayed on a service pitch which works really well for us, we have noticed some people use service pitches and still use the site facilities, we think this is a waste, we go on a service pitch so we can use our on board facilities, we had good relationship with the wardens found them really friendly and welcoming, they work hard keeping the site very tidy, that can't be easy when autumn is starting, the site now as a second dog exercise area which is really good, we went to arnside fish and chip shop and we can highly recommend it, it's excellent, approx 12 miles away, we took a thermal bag with hot water bottle inside to bring the chips back in to the caravan, yum yummy, we are definitely coming back here in 2022.
