Mosquito bites Sandringham

We visited the site during September 2023 for 12 days. We don’t use the toilet facilities or site WIFI but had a good TV signal and our own phone Wi-Fi so, the site was perfect for us. However, I was bitten over 30 times by mosquitoes and all the chemists in the areas had run out of creams. Other caravaners were bitten even worse. Two days after leaving I had an allergic reaction which started in my hands. The itch and swelling was excruciating. Lashing of creams eased the itch but next day I started to get problems swallowing liquids! This got worse as time went by and after two consultations with chemists and a visit to a minor A&E unit, I ended up on Hydrocortisone cream and Anti-Histamine tablets. This started to reduce the affects but after the tablets ran out, the symptoms came back with vengeance. I am now on a stronger Ani-Histamine tablet and things are getting better. Has anyone had similar affects?

A Big Improvement At Sandringham

We have just had our third visit to the Sandringham Estate club site this year and after almost three hours of traveling we received a warm welcome on arrival. Also, it was great to hear that the new Wi-Fi system is now up and running which is a significant improvement on this site as coverage by mobile network providers is poor to non-existent. Although the CAMC are not able to do anything about the network signal, the implementation of the new Wi-Fi system provides connectivity which makes planning a day out much easier. Previously we have refused to pay CAMC for site Wi-Fi but using the new free option we were able to browse and book venues to visit, check opening times and plot routes all from the comfort of our caravan. A big improvement! The facility blocks are a bit dated and in need of refurbishment which is apparently on the cards. However, in the meantime the club staff keep the things spotless and tidy but unfortunately some of the users are not so meticulous. The site is run by a friendly team who have proved very helpful in suggesting places to visit for walking. We have recently enjoyed walking on Dersingham common and in the Ken Hill woods, both places we would have missed without advice from the wardens. There are also nice walks in the woods around the site with the opportunity to observe wildlife such as deer and maybe even buzzards or red kites. This is a favourite site of ours, mainly due to the lovely ambience and there are also plenty of interesting places to visit without having to travel far. Will there be a fourth visit by us before the end of the year? Possibly, but nothing booked yet. Since the clubs change to T&Cs we no longer book ahead but watch the weather forecast, check availability and book accordingly.

Is this the same site??

We rarely use Club Sites, but having a voucher to use, we decided this was an area we'd never been to, but we were a bit worried by some of the reviews. Well as the title says "Is This The Same Site?". We were greeted at the barrier by a very friendly warden, who told us everything we needed to know to get 'Pitched Up', so made our way to the Motorhome Service Area. This was well sign posted, very well kept, and easy to park up at. We drove round the beautifully kept site, and selected where we wanted to pitch. Returning to reception with our pitch number, we happily chatted away for some time with the very friendly wardens, and got loads of ideas about the area. We also checked out the well stocked Information Hut for maps and timetables. Tea was sorted when the visiting Fish and Chip Van arrived, and very nice they were too! With access directly into the woods, it's an incredible place to wander round, very relaxing, although the dog enjoyed charging around much faster! The walk through the woods to Sandringham House is just gorgeous. The wi-fi on site worked well, although my 4G was only slightly affected. Didn't bother me though. We did not intend to get a TV booster if it didn't work, we're not that bothered. However, we found we got 35 stations, some better than others, but was perfectly watchable. And finally the "facilities". Well unless you're expecting Brand New 5* Service Blocks, we can't understand some of the comments. Yes they have seen a few years service, but they were all perfectly adequate, spotlessly clean, powerful hot showers, and working toilets.....what more do you need? Great place, will definitely return.

Badly needs an overhaul - facilities, signal and approach to customers

This is a relatively expensive site that seems to rely on its location reputation to mitigate the very poor facilities, lack of signal strength and unhelpful staff. 1. Signal strength was especially poor - some of us need to keep in touch with dependent others. When we asked a site warden about a signal we were told we’d have to go offsite or use the phone box. The member of staff seemed more concerned about their site management tasks than member dissatisfaction. Booster cables were available but these were charged for. 2. The facilities were very old and impossible to keep properly clean - cracks in tiles and porcelain sinks. The shower heads looked unhealthy and one of the cubicles was covered in talcum powder (the fault of a user obviously but The Club should remind its members that they need to clear up after themselves when using the facilities. Talcum powder in particular is a health hazard). One of the blocks contained a very small corner basin for hand-washing. Not all the hand wash receptacles were full either. 3. In general the site wardens seemed to spend most of their time on tasks that avoided coming in to contact with site users. To conclude, this site is stuck in a time warp. It is not OK in the 21C to shrug off poor signals, poor facilities and poor customer service. Yes, some people like not being in touch with the outside world but that should be an individual choice not a club choice. Land management and maintenance is important of course but it should not be more important than customer service.

Honesty is the best policy

The site is in a good location, granted, but the facilities are so poor in comparison to the great majority of sites, I'm surprised it continues to get such good reviews. There is no wifi; no phone signal; no TV reception - no, you won't be fine and yes, it is infuriating. The site is advertised as 'peaceful' - there's a reason for this... The shower blocks are just grotty - also, note the insect screens; they are there for a reason - we got eaten alive as our pitch bordered the forest walk which smelt rank on a warm day as it's a dog-walking area, too. There was also a smell of sewage for the few days we stayed there as the cesspit borders the fenced area near the entrance to the site. Due to the location, the cost of the site per night is comparatively high and the facilities do not make up for the convenience of being in North Norfolk. However, to end on a positive note, the staff are relentlessly cheerful and helpful.

Glorious week

Mozzies bad, but it's next to the woods and weather apparently was also a contributing factor, be warned and take stuff to combat it, the club can't be blamed and there is a stock of anti-bug wipes in the shop. Phone signal on Sky Mobile poor, again not a club fault, but enough to book tickets for visits and let's face it getting away from the world is perhaps one reason we go touring. What is within the control of the club, particularly the site staff, is be efficient, keep the site clean & tidy and be pleasant to visitors, all of which were top notch. Perhaps some of the facilities are starting to show signs of age, but not a problem to complain about for us and everything is clean at any time of the day and working as it should. Ideally placed for the sights around North Norfolk and there are plenty to keep you busy for more than the week we spent there, so that and enjoyment of the site is the reason we will be back. The weather in the high 20's didn't harm our enjoyment.

Great Location - but the mozzies were killer on this occasion.

The site at Sandringham is our local club site, so any excuse is used to pop over and stay for a few days. In fact it has been a bonus this year that we have been able to use the facilities at all after the proposed refurbishment has been delayed. On this occasion we were staying on a hardstanding pitch on the bottom field so that we could make the most of the sun over the weekend. We were booked in for 3 nights and had a busy weekend planned visiting the local beaches and sites. However, on this occasion we had a greeting party of a number of mosquito's so I was bitten several times whilst unhitching the van. Half a can of bug repellent was used whilst setting up the awning. That said this situation is unheard of on our previous visits and has been caused by the recent wet weather followed by the sudden warm weather causing an explosion of numbers in the forest. Despite, the bugs our enjoyment of the weekend was not dampened at all. We had our usual relaxing time. Other reviewers mention the poor phone and wifi signal, but this just means you get to relax more and don't have to worry about your phone. The pitches are large and spacious so you don't feel that your are being overlooked. The site is quiet and friendly. The showering facilities are showing their age but they are very clean and the water is hot. The Site Wardens also stop and chat on their way round. They are friendly and helpful in good measure. What's not to like. We will certainly be back in the very near future.

Great location shame about the Mozzies, phone signal and wifi

Great site in beautiful location, The hot weather and rain apparently fuels the mosquitoes and the site was plagued by them. Be aware that you have to go top end of site to get phone signal and wifi is limited to hotspot outside reception. TV signal from cable to service point is fine. Certainly go there again but not in august.

Lovely site, excellent staff and location, but looking tired

Excellent location, fantastic staff but the facilities are looking pretty shabby around the edges. The toilet blocks are tired and cramped and not up to the usual CAMC standard - they badly need refurbishing. Several pitches are very uneven making levelling hard work. Wifi atrocious and no bench by the single hotspot leaving people of all ages to sit on the pavement. The play area is nice and the layout of the site is good with a variety of settings. Watch out for the mozzies if you’re by the trees. We enjoyed our stay and will be returning, but we hope some investment has been made to justify the price of the stay.

Ready for refurbishment

Spent 10 days here in June. Lovely weather but facilities let it down. Showers and toilets clean and the wardens are doing their best to keep the deteriorating facilities in good condition, but they are desperately in need of a refurbishment. Pitches also ready for upgrade. Wi-Fi poor when we were there, had to stand outside reception to get signal. Lovely wardens, very helpful and friendly. Lovely location, great for walks into the estate and good for dogs. Will go again but only after it has been refurbished.
