Situated at the end of Morecambe Bay close to Lancaster, Carnforth's biggest claim to fame is that its railway was used as the setting for the 1945 feature film Brief Encounter. Today, visitors can walk around a reconstruction of the studio set thanks to a refurbishment by the Carnforth Station Trust.
Once out of the station, it's worth heading to the Visitor Centre's interesting museum, as well as Carnforth Bookshop for more than 100,000 second-hand and antiquarian tomes. A handful of cafes and pubs can offer refreshments after a spot of sightseeing.
Warton Crag overlooks the town and is a haven for wildlife, including the Pearl-Bordered Fritillary butterfly, as well as for hikers, climbers and abseilers.
Just outside Carnforth, Leighton Hall and Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve are both well worth a visit.
