Clumber Park Club Campsite

My regular beef about sites is that they are too often surrounded by trees. So it was that I ventured to Clumber Park in the full knowledge that the gloom I feel when encased in forest would inevitably descend. As it was, however, I got a surprise; the site has lots of big wide open spaces and, consequently, although the boundaries are certainly tree lined – as one might expect in the midst of Sherwood Forest – I did not suffer with the usual claustrophobia that arboreal living gives me. The site was unexpectedly bright, open and not at all melancholic. I had no complaint at all about any of the facilities which were all up to par (although only one toilet block was open they looked pretty much identical from the outside) and the wardens were very friendly and helpful. The road immediately leading up to the site could do with a little attention but really there is nothing to complain about the quality of the site or the facilities. The children’s playground looks lovely too for the younger ones. The exception to these positives was the Wi-Fi. I sometimes have to rely on this to deal with issues that crop up in my work and so I was concerned to see a sign “Sorry no Wi-Fi” on arrival. In fact, it was working, but it was patchy and very slow. I managed to do what I had to do, but when one has paid for this service it is unacceptable that it so often is not available. I know some members pooh-pooh Wi-Fi and get all superior about its needless presence - as once people did about electricity or telephones. But one day soon it will be as essential as an electric hook-up and this is something that must be sorted. I had no (Vodafone) phone signal here either, not even a glimmer until I moved some distance from the site, but one can’t blame the CC for that. The TV points on the bollards gave a decent signal but even that was patchy.
The site is very cut off from any civilisation. Worksop is the nearest town but it is still just over four miles by the shortest route for cyclists or walkers. By car it is well over 6 miles. There are no shops or other facilities close by. Because of this, the site was not to my personal liking. I like to be reasonably close to towns or villages which I can explore and visit. Here, without a car to go further afield, you are really limited to Clumber Park itself, which I found really rather dull, or Worksop if you have a bike or like long walks (but I found the town as glum as its name suggests). Overall I could see no reason to be here for more than a couple of days. But I know this is a very personal view and many would take a different stance. Because the site is plainly popular. Even on a very cold weekend in March the number of late Friday arrivals was considerable with lots of families. For those looking for peace and quiet, relaxing in the van, or out of it in good weather, and walking in forests, this place is ideal. I accept I’m in a minority, but it’s not for me.
No wi-fi on site
I knew before booking this site that there would be no mobile signal, but it was not until we arrived and seen the notice on the reception notice board that there was no wi-fi on the site, this should be stated in the club handbook or at least in the club magazine. As I have paid for a years wi-if in advance I feel I have lost a weeks use.
The club should try and solve this problem Asap.
First timers
We chose clumber park as it was our local site and it was our first time both towing and caravanning, a lovely peaceful site even though it was fully booked, lovely clean ablutions and the staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. We have 3 boys aged 5, 3 and 2 and they loved the paths into the woods straight from the site and loved walking and cycling them. Didn't take a TV so can't comment on the signal but the children's play area was also great so after hours in the fresh air the kids were fast asleep without the need for a TV! Will definately be back numerous times as it's open all year with good spacious hardstanding pitches! The Ellis family
Maiden Voyage
This was the maiden voyage not only for our new caravan, but also for us as caravanners. We chose Clumber as it was only 10 miles from home,so far enough to be away for the weekend, but close enough to home should we have forgotten anything! We had what can only be described as I super time. From when we arrived we were greeted by the team on site with friendly smiling faces and a very well explained introduction to the site and its facilities. We found the facilities brilliant.Plenty of water points, waste points etc and the toilet and shower blocks were immaculate and were cleaned every day.Anyone who 'moans' about this site must moan about everything in life!Couldn't fault it,and if this sets the standard for the caravan club sites then we are chuffed that we joined. We will definitely be back
connectivity minimal, site office invisible
This site has an excellent National Trust estate location and the walking and cycling from the site is superb. I think that is why it is so popular and perhaps explains a lack of investment. There is no mobile signal on site and very very poor wifi and you need a tv booster cable. Needs investment Caravan club. Although we were there in early season, the site was full ( some pitches not in use) for the weekend and yet there is only one pair of wardens on site and only one toilet block open. Also, there was no sign indicating office opening hours and I would expect it to open before 0930 on a sunday morning when the site is full. Our needs were simple, we only wanted change for the tumble dryers, so we wouldn't of course ring the emergency number, but it was inconvenient not to know what time the office opened.Warden's attitude didn't appear member centric, but perhaps there should be two couples on this site, perhaps he is overworked.

First trip of 2015.
Third time we have visited Clumber, weather behaved, the dog had a great time. Great value with kids for a penny. Very relaxing and peaceful. Wish it had been for longer than a cheeky weekend break. We will return soon.
Dissapointed
Clumber is our local site and we have stayed here many times and loved it. This time when we arrived we were told to only use the top end of the site. I can understand that the grass pitches are off limits at times and even closing one of the toilet blocks when the site is quiet but we have never been denied our choice of hardstandings before. We did what was asked and kept to the top end but it quite took the enjoyment out of our stay. Also I think the toilet blocks are ready for a bit of refurbishment. I am very sorry to downgrade our opinion of this wonderful site but I will think twice before coming here again.
great relaxing site
Just returned from 5 day break heating in showers was ok bear in mind it was very cold outside so maybe that had a bearing on temprature wardens really helpful i turned up with no gas warden sorted me out no problem thanks.Lovely clean site great for dog walks great for children love this site will return.

Showers need attention.
Visited last week. During the 6 night stay I noticed the top toilet block showers getting colder each day. I visited at varying times ranging from 7am to 9.30am. Thought I would have a "friendly" word with the Warden who was cleaning the block. I was told, " boiler is working as it should you must be visiting at the wrong time"
I guess I must have imagined the issue and took the time to bring it to his attention for no other reason than to be an inconvenience to him. Where the hell do the club get these people, do they not get basic Customer, yes Customer because anyone who believes this is still a club would also believe the showers were hot get any training?
Apart from that small issue which would have not been an issue if it was not for the wardens attitude we would have enjoyed our stay at this wonderful site.
Dogs Heaven
No matter how many times We visit this site we always enjoy it, so many different walks from the site the car never moves. Good hard standings although a few are prone to holding water!! Two good amenities blocks but one is now closed until march?? as are some hard standings !(When site is full at weekends Come on CC Not good enough)
No phone signal as usual And again I found it impossible to get on the wifi!! As have many people! Come on club sort it out!! But as usual enjoyable stay and will be going back yet again!!
