Great site

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this site. We are veteran campers, but new to holidaying in a campervan. Having read the reviews we were a little concerned at having booked here, but the site is great. It was very busy, full of families and loads of children, but then it was August. We used the shower and toilet facilities every morning, and found them clean and fully functional. I am sure it is a real challenge to keep everything clean and tidy during such a busy time, but I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and tidy everything was. We will definitely be back. The surroundings are stunning, with great views of the sea and countryside, and easy access to Brixham. The local buss didn't arrive on the morning we planned to get to Brixham, and as my husband was booked on a sailing trip, we needed to get to Brixham harbour urgently. Staff were really helpful in advising us on how to find a taxi and we made it on time. I stayed onsite with just my dog for three nights and everything was great. We didn't use the pool or club house as it's not our thing, but I do think the staff here should be praised for their hard work and support provided to campers.

Overpriced and cramped

At over £50 a night this is an exceedingly expensive site. As it was the school holidays then it is bound to be busy and for me a big mistake to visit at such a time. I wanted to camp in the area to visit local places of interest and Hillhead is fine for this. I didn't need or want the pool, restaurant, bar or entertainment. Perhaps the Club should make pitch fees cheaper and those wishing to access the bar, restaurant, pool and entertainment purchase a pass. I will not be returning as prices are too high.

Third time of staying

Third time of visiting the site and just love this area of Devon. This time we just booked a standard hs pitch as previously we booked a service pitch to find the larger service pitches taken up by small units and camper vans whilst the only service pitch left was literally with it overhanging and only just big enough for our twin axle. Perhaps allocation of these pitches based on outfit would be better. Love the facilities and found the staff in the club snd shop friendly. The shower toilet blocks are a little tired but adequate and clean. The location close to Brixham and Dartmouth with a bus service is great. Only gripe is the constant moving of motor homes every morning looking for to move to a better pitch meaning those turning up on their first day are not are left with very little choice. Allocation of pitches would be far better and I have to question are those people booking a cheap grass pitch then moving to a hard standing pitch the following day without paying the extra or to the knowledge of staff !

worn out in both the facilities and the staff.

Summary : The site has a pool, children's play area, open field space, dog walking facilities, 1 (!!) shower block (closed between 1030 and 1230) and an on-site shop. All of which are tired and looking a little worse for wear. Check-in and Pitching: We booked the site in January this year for a 1-week getaway with the grandkids. The children are 8 and 10. On arriving, we checked in without any issues. We had booked a fully serviced pitch, and the team there had reserved a good spot for us. Pitching onto the site was no problem for some of the pitches. Swinging a motorhome or larger caravan into some of the pitches may be tricky, and some of the lanes on the site are a little tight if others have not pitched completely sensibly, but overall the check-in and pitch setup was smooth and problem free. Toilet and Shower Facilities: 1 main shower and toilet block, with laundry facilities and family rooms (unused). This was closed for cleaning between 1030 and 1230 each day. I'm sure The cleaning staff did their best, but at least one of the toilet cubicles had the remains of someone's nose pickings all over the wall for the duration of our stay, so perhaps they were not quite as clean as could be. The two-hour close did not bother us, but it may catch some people out. There were a couple of days when the showers were in a real state before the cleaning session, and the cleaners did their best to bring it back to a standard. We did use the laundry facilities; these were good, the driers were effective, and the washing machines did the job. 4 tokens for the wash, one token for the dry (15 minutes dry), so on a par with most laundry facilities. Entertainment: There is a swimming pool (1.2m deep) and a splash pool. Both were good and clean, and well used. Pool is heated so even on a cold and wet day, it was Ok in the pool. There are staff on duty for the day at the pool. Towards the back of the site, there is a children's play area, a good number of play items, and the ground was the spongy stuff that will not cause hospital trips if you fall off a play item onto it. All seemed in good working order, and the grandkids with us really enjoyed the area. There is also a large field for ball games etc. The entertainment/clubhouse area was a good size, but the staging area was small and did mean if you wanted to watch the entertainment, you needed to get there early to get a viewing seat. Pricing of drinks was on the high side, we did not eat there, so I cannot comment on the food quality or pricing. On site shop was hit-and-miss. The staff did not seem that willing to sell items and would rather be on their phone. Hopefully, this was just our luck and not normal! It is a bus trip if you expect to get to the beach from here. It is not a walkable trip, even though it is (visually) close. Overall, as it's a flagship site, I can NOT recommend this place until it's had a bit of a revive and wake-up.

Facilities poor, site great

We have stayed on this site many times when our children were young & have now returned with grandchildren. Since then there has been no upgrade in the washroom facilities and this is unfortunately this site’s downfall. They are in desperate need of a rebuild. Quite dirty with heavy use but no amount of cleaning would make them any better. The club house and entertainment are very good, we definitely enjoyed the bingo, the children enjoyed watching Cosmo. The downside this year was that the staff were quite dour - not quite in the holiday spirit perhaps. Location of this site is perfect and as always the surrounding area is beautiful. Still worth a visit.

Hillhead Campsite - 03/08/23

This was our first time staying at this site. We found it good for our family, our 6yr old loved the playground which had a good variety of equipment and our dog loved the dog walk field which was well kept, clean and well fenced. The site is quite hilly, but not as bad as some we have stayed on. The pitches are not as well kept as other sites, many weeds etc, but nice to have the little privacy hedges. Decent waste and water areas dotted round the site. The shower and toilet facilities need a good overhaul, updating and cleaning more often. Toilets broken, some mould in the showers etc. The clothes wash facility was very good. Wifi is absoutlely useless! I even paid for 'Premium' and it was a waste of money! The pool is ok, but bare in mind the childs play section in the pool is not heated, our lad found it too cold, though when we stayed the weather wasnt great. Shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. Reception never answer the phone and could be friendlier! Overall it wasnt the best site we have stayed on but that said, we would stay again if we were down that way.

Very dissapointed stay

Honestly don't know where the 5 star reviews come from other people must be staying at a different site, where do we Begin firstly the 1oclock arrival time was not addeared to and people where arriving from 10 o'clock and being let on when it's drilled into you not to arrive early when others are arriving at the stated time. The facilities haven't changed for 15 plus years toilet blocks disgusting dirty and black mould allover the ceiling in the showers (health hazard) and the pitches themselves are a mess no proper up keep hard to get on to the only baby wash room we could use due to people hogging keys smelled of raw sewage so couldn't bathe my baby for 6 days unacceptable, secondly the staff at the club where so rude and unfriendly it's like they dident want to be there and people where and inconvenience to them and the food wasn't good and it was expensive. And in general the site is very run down and not worth the money just so dissapointed as this site was once really nice but now needs a serious overall so due to this will not be coming again which is a shame on a positive the location is lovely and the dog walk is nice such a shame the site has become so run down :(

Absolute Gem

I asked for recommendations on CAMC chat and this was recommended. I was so impressed by the facilities! we took the grandchildren and they loved it! I didn't actually know they did entertainment so this was a bonus. Nice private pitches and some little copses which hold four vans/caravans. Spotless showers, really really enjoyed this site. We will be back

Very relaxing stay on dog-, family-friendly site

I hadn’t booked so a short wait before I could get in but thereafter everything was great. Very friendly lady on reception, gave me map of site and guided to nice sheltered site (was very blustering when I arrived). Lots of relaxed families, dog owners on site. Great wildlife by my pitch kept my pup up and intrigued all night. Staff visible and available to help. Well stocked shop. Would have liked a coffee machine and maybe some fresh pastries on site but not fatal to the great time we had. Very enjoyable stay.

Disappointed

We have been coming here for years but will be giving it a miss next year until the long overdue improvement to the site is completed. Negatives, toilets are awful, broken seats toilets that don't, flush ,sewerage smell from family room when I went to bath my granddaughter. Loads of privacy hedges removed for whatever reason leaving some pitches exposed to the elements and no privacy. Meals in the club expensive and poor quality ,when we asked about something missing from one of the meals we were greeted with an abrupt response from a member of staff Who looked like it was too much trouble to sort it Site very quiet for peak season,
