Chester is situated in the English county of Cheshire, close to the border with Wales. It is one of the best preserved walled cities in the UK and so is fantastic for history buffs.
However, there's plenty for everyone to do in this cosmopolitan destination, from shopping in the medieval centre and watching a film at the Storyhouse arts centre to enjoying a trip up the river on a pleasure cruise.
There is also a racecourse, a cathedral, a Roman amphitheatre and the excellent Chester Falconry and Nature Gardens, where you can get up close and personal with birds of prey.
For animal encounters though, the world-famous zoo is a must-see and is just a short drive away from the city centre. It now includes a new play centre for young children too.
