Nice stay

Had a lovely 4 nights on this site, busy main road, but can hardly be heard. Surrounded by horses in fields and rabbits running all over the place, wonderful. A 200 yard walk brings you to the Hayling Billy, a railway that closed down in 1964 and has been turned into a footpath, horse ride and cycleway and runs up the coast. Right outside the site is the bus stop to Havant or Hayling running every quarter of an hour weekdays and half hour Sundays. The only problem is the caravan club sign is completely worn out and the sign for the stables is behind a hedge, look out for 149 which is in big letters on the wall, the site is the next turning right on a left hand bend no 147.

Our first visit

This was our first visit to Hayling Island and we've just spent 5 nights at Westcroft. The field is beside the stables and all the activity that entails. There is limited hardstanding and if you pitch here during the wetter months of the year, the ground may be too soft, in which case the hardstanding will be crowded. The electric hookup for all 5 units is located at the lowest corner of the field so I would recommend an extension lead to be able to pitch away from the crowd. Yes the toilet is basic, located in the stable yard, but if you don't like that you don't have to use it. If you don't like long grass then stay on a manicured club site. We really enjoyed our stay. The site is just a short walk from the Hayling Billy Trail on which you can walk or cycle north passed the many wading birds etc on the mud flats and oyster beds to the harbour and beyond to the marina if you wish. If you go south you can eventually end up at the shingle beach. Just outside the site is a bus stop with buses every 15 minutes travelling either north to Havant or south to the beach. The nearby Esso garage has a Spar, there are also farm shops nearby or more shops nearer the beach for all your essentials. There are also pubs along the road serving food. The road is busy, but in October with windows closed we didn't hear the noise from inside our van. We'll definitely be back to visit Hayling Island again.

Value for money

The site is value for money at only £10 a night but the area you could use was very stony and we couldn't put up our porch awning. There was only one electric point for all 5 pitches so it restricted where you could pitch. But the main problem was the access to the site. It is on a very sharp bend and to turn right into the drive didn't do any good to the car & caravan. Our advice would be to keep driving another mile & a half and go round the roundabout and drive onto the site using a left turn. Ann was very helpful as we had to stay another night due to the high winds. She also came over and collected the money. The toilet was basic as it was in the stable yard.

Westcroft

This site needs reviewing by the club again. It is well below standard. The site is about half an acre only with just one box for electric so long, or multiple leads are needed. The ground is very bumpy so careful selection of site is required. The site is also a dumping ground for the horse manure from the adjoining Riding Stables and there is a large area of rubble and stones. When we arrived, we found a notice on the gate that tells us we may have to find another place on the Island to pay the money. I just pitched up and waited for them to find me. The toilets are very dirty and not safe to sit on. But then, what should we expect for £7 per night? As the wind was in the right direction, we did not suffer from the horse manure and stayed. The walk out to the coast path was nice, the bus stop outside the site with busses every 15 mins was nice and it was a quiet site. May 2013 in a Motorhome.
