Breathe in

The site is well located for the south Hams and visiting Salcombe, Dartmouth, Plymouth and the English Riviera. It was quiet, clean and the wardens friendly when we stayed in the last week of September. There was a wide choice of pitches, including hard standing. Facilities are dated, my guess is twenty or more years old. Why? Well here's the rub. The (recommended) access roads are very narrow in parts and locals seem not too averse to shoving their, and your, vehicles deep in thorn hedges. We shall not return because we don't want a recurrence of either the journey to the site, or that leaving when we encountered a quarry wagon that seemingly lacked reverse gear and got within an inch of the habitation bodywork on our motorhome. My guess is many others have thought the same, which may explain why the Club has not renewed the facilities. But once on site it is a nice place to stay.

Well maintained quiet site

The roads on approach to the site can be a little tight in places, as long as you take it steady and anticipate there may be a tractor or van coming round the corner it is fine. Don't let this put you off, the site is well maintained and the week we were there it was lovely and quiet. The toilet blocks are slightly dated but lovely and clean and as previous reviews have stated the best showers I've experienced so far. We used the site as a base to walk the coastal path, although the site is some 10 miles inland, it is located in the middle between Dartmouth and Plymouth. This part of Devon is stunning.

Peaceful site near the sea and Dartmoor, but beware the narrow roads!

A great site if, like us, you don't mind the narrow Devon roads leading to it. Even many of the A roads have stretches of single track and for motorhomers venturing beyond B roads is quite risky! The usual Club high standards of cleanliness and friendly wardens are here and we were very grateful for a last minute transfer booking from another site that had suffered very heavy rain and could not offer any hard pitches (despite booking months in advance!).It seems preference for hard standings goes to members booking for longer stays (not fair really) unless you fork out for a serviced pitch when a hard standing is guaranteed. Anyway, we were pleased with all aspects of the service at Modbury and it was a treat to explore a different area from the one we had planned. The toilet block cubicles here are small but the dog walk gets a gold star from our spaniel!

Close to perfect.

Excellent site. Spotless facilities... thoroughly cleaned daily. Hot powerful showers (no stupid push buttons) Good variety of hard standing and grass pitches. Great location for visiting Salcombe, Bigbury, Kingsbridge and Noss Mayo Wardens Simon and Sarah could not have been more friendly and helpful...a credit to the site and the club. We WILL be back. Don't just take our word for it...go there and enjoy.

Entertaining access roads, Relaxing once on site

The roads leading to the Modbury site can be challenging in parts if faced with large oncoming vehicles due to the narrow roads with limited passing places. However this shouldn't put you off, patience is a vertue as once on the site the management are very helpful and freindly with a Wealth of local knowledge. The site is well maintained in both the facilities and pitches. Great secure site for children to play. The site is a great location for surrounding activities, including Dartmouth Zoo, Woodlands Park and Plymouth.

One Of Our Favourites

We have visited this site a number of times over the years and are always amazed at how underused it is. This site is immaculately maintained by the wardens who are extremely friendly and helpful. Toilet facilities are dated but perfectly useable and always clean. Brilliant dog walk - one of the best on the network - shame that some of the users cannot be bothered to 'pick up'!! Handy for visiting the coast or going up onto Dartmoor. Thanks for a great stay.

Friendly and helpful

My wife and I stayed on the Modbury site for two weeks in July and had the best stay we have ever had on a Caravan Club site. We arrived after a really difficult journey with the car breaking down, but Sarah immediately offered to help us find a garage that could fix our car. When she found out that my wife had a disability she immediately offered us the pitch next to the toilet/shower block and loaned my wife a RADAR key to the disabled shower/toilet, which made a massive difference to my wife's enjoyment of her stay. She and her colleagues were always friendly and supportive, including when we came across them on the site. In fact we found virtually every caravanner there to be friendly and open, which meant that we really enjoyed our stay. I liked the open feel to the site, and the fact that there was plenty of space between pitches. We noted the play equipment on the children's playground, and the big open field with the maze cut through the long grass, and thought that our grandchildren (aged 5 and 7) would really enjoy the site. We found the location to be really good for getting to beaches between Plymouth and right the way east as far as Exmouth. Modbury (2 miles away) has a well-stocked Co-op which we used regularly for food, and there's a petrol/diesel filling station with a good shop at California Cross a mile in the other direction. The only downside is the 2 1/2 miles of road before you reach the site with one or two stretches where it is difficult for a caravan and car to get past each other (the road is between high banks which restrict visibility as well as space) and traffic can back up. Best wishes, Sarah, from us both - and keep up the good work!

Nice but lacks atmosphere

Lovely site but is in the middle of nowhere. Washrooms clean but badly need updating ! .The pitches are small due the fact the distance between posts are not checked regularly! So we ended up being squashed in when seasonal people poled up with 2 cars and parked right up against our awning!!!! We couldn't move up and we were all set up and half through the holiday !!!!

Peace and Tranquility

Visited Modbury site in June this year. Wonderful site, clean.well looked after. Superb wardens. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly Sarah who spent time to tell us where the best pitches were for a sunny evening ........that's a first for me! The directions for the site are excellent, along lanes that are narrow with huge passing places and good visibility, no problem with our twin axle if you just take it steady. The Town of Modbury is blessed with a few pubs and takeaways that will deliver to the site. The nearby Devon coastline is stunning, well worth a visit. The site itself is immaculate, the toilet block was tired, but spotless and decorated with hanging baskets. We noticed that that the team of wardens never stopped cutting back hedges, mowing and tidying up in awesome heat, yet still found time to stop for a chat, smile and a friendly wave. It was Simon the assistant warden who told us about the takeaway delivery service, chatting whilst trimming our hedge! We can highly recommend Modbury site and hope to return again as there are so many beautiful places to visit close by. Top marks to the team
