Our country getaway 15 minutes from Cardiff home

Tredegar House Country Park is 15 minutes from our home in Cardiff. It is our local CAMC getaway and we feel like we are deep in the countryside! The site is lovely; quiet (not affected by the M4 and A48), surrounded by trees, and spacious pitches (and not too close to neighbours). The Country Park is superb with small lake and acres of green space. The House and Gardens are National Trust run and well worth visiting. Saturday mornings there is a Parkrun, with the Junior Parkrun on Sunday mornings. We've visited (again) this weekend and enjoyed the annual Tredegar House Folk Festival. It really is worth a visit. I know that a lot of local people don't think of it as a location, but it's a gem for enjoying local!

Enroute overnight stop

We stopped at Tredegar House site for one night enroute to southwest Wales and for this purpose it was perfect. Being close to the motorway and main roads means there is traffic noise overnight but the good access, lovely surroundings and nearby walks, clean facilities and very friendly staff more than make up for this.

Lovely staff

Stayed a couple of times here whilst doing some business in Newport. So convenient for the centre. At my visit last week, I found the staff so lovely and helpful. The site is small which is good as I don't like huge sites. The facilities are kept very clean and nice. As someone else mentioned, all club sites close the toilet block 10.00-12.00 which is a bit early i think. Maybe 12.00-13.00. Anyway pleasant spot if near a busy road and of course Tredegar House Gardens are free to walk round.

Generally good

We have made several visits to this site and its convenience to the motorway and to Tredegar house is excellent. There are several bug bears though The pitches are large but so solid even steel pegs are bent, they are looking a bit shabby too and the lumps of clinker over the top gave for a sprained ankle! The toilet block is clean but again showing its age and 10-12 for cleaning with 1 unisex loo - come on please And the gate- after 4 you have to get out of the car unlock the padlock open it drive through stop lock it and if it’s pitch dark or pouring with rain when you arrive walk through the park to the site. Why there can’t be some kind of intercom or it be opened with the key card I don’t know. Having moaned we do like this site- like it’s small size and it’s position. It just needs a bit of TLC

Improved access would make this site so much better!

We have stayed at Tredegar a number of times. The site is well maintained and the welcome friendly. Due to the National Trust entrance, the gates giving access to the site are locked quite early, requiring a walk to fetch keys etc. The volume of traffic coming onto and off the site after the gate is locked is significant. I think the club could relatively easily operate a videolink to unlock the gate from the reception area on production of identification. That would help this site access considerably.

Friendly Staff and excellent Site

I stayed at this site during the Christmas and New Year period. The Wardens went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. They went that extra mile by giving a small gift to each caravan on Christmas day and New Years Eve. I stay on this site regularly during the year and aleays found the staff to be very friendly. The site is very clean and tidy and the amenities block is kept in a very clean condition. I would recommend anyone visiting Cardiff or Newport to base themselves at this site. I am looking forward to my next visit later this year.

Tredegar house

Lovely campsite with a lovely walk around the grounds on the doorstep, saw so much wildlife from Kingfishers to bullfinches and listening to the owls at night was amazing. Very clean and tidy site and it was nice that the shower room was nice and warm as we stayed for 3 weeks end of November and some campsites have not had all there radiators on, helpful staff at Tredegar park the only downsides are a little close to main roads so can be a little noisy at times and the Newport round about system is horrendous and very confusing if you don't know the area, I would rather avoid it like the plague and maybe they should think about selling gas bottles on site as the nearest place to buy is a local farm.

Staff a dantastic help to us newbies

Having been campervanners for years and previously stayed at this site, we chose this for our first 'try it out' stay in the caravan. We picked up the caravan from Highbridge caravans 4 hours before our stay. On arrival, staff were very happy and finding out this was our first use of a caravan, offered to help with any problems. Not long afterwards we had problems with water flow though our taps. Eventually we sought help from the staff. One came over and realised the brand new water pump was curled from being in the packet. He advised to warm some water in a bowl and place pump into it to soften the hose. Then to pull it straight and hold it as it cooled. This resolved the issue. 5 stars to the staff. The site was busy for a November but still quiet and no waiting for facilities. We are going back this weekend for a proper stay. Also, it rained a lot but the pitch and the site itself was very well drained.

Unfortunate experience

We have stayed at many CAMC sites and have usually had positive experiences. I have to say, this site was the exception to the rule. The location is lovely and it's a great base from which to explore the local area, excluding traffic conditions. However, it seems as if the wardens make things complicated which needn't be. When we arrived 7 minutes before 1pm, there was a queue of motorhomes and caravans. This unfortunately blocked the access road in and out of the site for the people already in. The wardens stood watching the queue grow and gave the 'okay' for the first campers at 1.01pm. When we eventually made it to check-in all seemed okay. We found the pitch and I rushed off to the bathroom, only to find a keypad not previously mentioned. I hurry to the office where they were still checking people in to ask for the key pad code. They refused to give it to me until I told them the pitch number... which I hadn't made note of before going to the bathroom. This meant back to the pitch again, back to the office again and then finally to the toilets. Ridiculous. The access/exit by foot is blocked so that everyone is herded through barriers which land in front of the office door. Awesome trying to manoeuvre through when queues are filled with dogs, children and people waiting to get access to the one person at time office. The inflexibility of the wardens was surprising and disappointing. We left our pitch early as a result. As lovely as the location was, we'll never return to this campsite.
