A secluded setting up in the coastal Highlands awaits visitors to Dunrobin Castle. The grandeur of the 13th-century structure perfectly compliments the breezy surroundings, in a style that resembles a chateau of mainland France rather than the traditional image of a British castle. The castle’s gardens are also inspired by Versailles.
There are falconry displays on the castle’s lawn that showcase magnificent birds of prey and with over 180 rooms to discover, it’s a magnificent insight into the privilege of Clan Sutherland, who have made this home for over 700 years.

Another structure situated atop a cliff, Culzean Castle has overlooked the Firth of Clyde since its construction in 1569. There’s lavish room after lavish room to see, inspired by the architect Robert Adam. He blended ‘neoclassical elegance with a fortress-like exterior’ to create this Ayrshire gem.
There’s an extensive country park surrounding the castle that’s well worth a stroll though, with miles of woodland walks, a swan pond and secret gardens leading down to a rocky beach.
