View and BookRussell and Angela invite you to visit Spears Ash Wood CL on the outskirts of the stunning village of Smarden in the heart of the Kentish Weald. We offer a relaxed, informal, natural site with the benefit of electrical hook up, drinking water point, waste disposal and recycling.
Smarden is one of the most beautiful villages in Kent blessed with a significant number of attractive timber-framed houses and a medieval church, known as the Barn of Kent due its massive roof span.
We are a small village with a big character boasting 3 pubs all serving food within a short walk of ½ mile!! Not only that but we have a traditional butcher’s offering local meats, a vibrant art gallery and a shop selling small antiques and bric-a-brac. Our volunteer-run community shop, Post Office and café is buzzing and open 7 days a week! A Heritage Centre is open in the Charter Hall on Friday mornings; a place which houses a small collection of museum artefacts and rich archives relating to Smarden’s history. As well as the C of E Church there is a thriving Baptist Chapel in the centre of the village.
In the summer why not enjoy watching a game of cricket on the Minnis. During the season football is played most weekends. We are gifted with many National Trust properties nearby or visit one of the many local vineyards.
We are ideally situated for walking; Smarden has numerous footpaths and a gentle stroll around Mill Lane is rewarding. This is also a great area for cycling. We are keen cyclists we can point you in the direction of some rides to suit your ability taking in many beautiful Kent villages not forgetting the orchards and hop gardens. Electric bikes can be hired from Headcorn Aerodrome only 1.5 miles away. Dering Woods has various trails and nearby Pluckley is supposedly the most haunted village in England!
Of course you may just wish to sit and relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the countryside. You might spot a Spitfire leaving Headcorn Aerodrome or hear the lions in the distance at the Big Cat Sanctuary (don’t worry they have big fences) or see barn owls flying, and other native wildlife in and around the woods, lanes and river Beult.
We welcome (max 2) well behaved dogs kept on leads. Due to the nature of the surroundings no wood-burning fires are permitted. Supervised gas barbecues only are allowed.

Russell and Angela, who were very friendly, have created a lovely site nestled in a lovely wood but with space to spare. EHU and water in easy reach of the caravan and waste a short walk. Electric was reliable with no problems, if you want TV signal isn’t great, for us not a problem, although found the nearest transmitter was to the West which gave a good selection of channels. Nicely mown grass pitches which were dry and level. There were 5 vans on site but didn’t feel too close. Nice to see that there are well kept areas left wild to give that natural feeling rather than simply an open field The 2 furthest plots against the perimeter seem to get the best of the sun in the evening but we saw the sun in the day and then in the evening simply had to move our seats, a wind break may help keep any wind chill down. Whilst the road is relatively close this didn’t bother us as it is fairly quiet and not the main road into Smarden. Short walk into Smarden which has 2 lovely pubs, The Chequers has a lovely garden and we ate at the Flying Horse which is just behind the lovely church, both recommended. Headcorn only a few miles away has a Sainsbury’s Local. If looking for fishing, Sam’s Lakes is a short drive and offers 2 large lakes. Overall a very nice site which we would visit again and would recommend.
