a jewel but some things to be aware of

First visit to Carsington Water and found a jewel. Although quite a large site the pitches are in smaller areas surrounded by pine trees so when pitched the site doesn't feel large. The facilities are among the very best in the network and everything is maintained to a very high standard by the wardens. There are perhaps a few minor negatives which others may wish to know. The site is on a continuous slope from bottom (where entered) to top. The toilet block is in the middle. Unless pitched close to the toilet block the walk either to or from the toilet block is uphill. The pitches themselves are mostly not flat. And due to the pine trees surrounding the pitches most either don't receive sun until later than expected in the morning, or lose the sun earlier than expected in the afternoon. On a wet day the site can feel darker than a more open site would be. But these minor negatives are more than compensated by the standard of the facilities and general ambience, as well the close proximity of the reservoir. (Circuit is perfect for pre-breakfast run.) There are several National Trust properties within easy driving distance, Kedleston Hall perhaps being the closest and worth a visit.

Lovely site!

This was our first visit to the site and we have already booked another visit! The site was in a lovely location surrounded by pine trees. Although it is quite a large site the layout means that it feels much smaller and offers more privacy and peace and quiet than other larger sites we have visited. The wardens were very friendly and welcoming and the toilet block was always clean and I particularly enjoyed the music which accompanied my morning shower! We have 2 dogs and the dog walk is one of the best we have found which surrounds the park and the dogs loved it!  The only suggestion we could offer is that some of the pitches are on a slight slope so levellers would be an advantage.  We are looking forward to our next visit.

Edge of the Peak

Lovely site on the shore of Carsington Water. Friendly wardens, good facilities and lovely flowering tubs and baskets. Site well laid out with some lake view pitches. Good for families and everyone. Good dog walk on site, which is very clean. Glad to see dog leaflet being handed out to all dog owners and clean-up reminder notices on site.

Six Days in July

Our visit began on the 17 July  With a satnav it was straightforward to find. Signing in was easy and we were able to find our own pitch with no problems as there was good availability. Staff were helpful and pleasant.Toilet facilities were close at hand and were clean and adequate for our needs.  The site's position was good for touring the Peak District and for visiting our friends close by.  For anyone like ourselves wishing to investigate Carsington Water itself, as we did on our first evening, be aware that guidance to or around the reservoir from the site perhaps needs a little more description as what started off as a short walk to where we thought Cardington village was turned out to be a four hour walk round it and we got lost at the end. Our fault but signage back to our site on foot could have been better. Once you reach the dam get on to the road running by and the site is round the corner. Probably a good idea to bring heavy duty metal awning pegs as the ground on our pitch was quite hard. Access round the site is good and it reminded us of the Club's Mildenhall site. We would return to the site in the future.

Single person active but classed as elderly

Carsington Water camp site is located close to a number of dog walks, although most must be on a lead. Not particularly useful if you have a disability scooter but we managed. Used the High Peak trail, , hired the Tramper there, Carsington Water paths and the Cromford canal. This site and local amenities suitable for those with walking difficulties and use of scooters. BEAUTIFUL CARSINGTON

We returned from the site on Friday having spent a week there. It was just SO lovely. So neat and clean and the shower block was fantastic. Great reception shop with all sorts of essentials ou might need, for sale. Papers can be ordered too. Everything was ideal for us with a lovely dog walk around the perimeter of the site (but it's a bit tree rooty, so not so good for the infirm), however the dogs loved it. The walk to Carsington Water is a matter of minutes. A lovely flat walk so okay for unsure-of-foot people. Up the end of the lake is a Visitors Centre with couple of shops and nice clean loos and a place to get tea/snacks/ice cream. Back on site, the wardens are helpful and friendly and hardworking, they were constantly doing things like tidying up and cutting grass etc. Had a lovely little gesture from one of the other caravanners too. Since her husband had to go to work on Friday, we asked if she'd like to come for a dog walk with us round the lake. She declined. On Monday, when we got back to our caravan, after a day out the particular couple had left for home, but there was a note and a little bunch of wildflowers (Clovers and Buttercups), left for us thanking us for our kindness. I took the Clovers and buttercups in and put them in a wine glass. one small gesture that meant a lot. I smiled each time I looked at those flowers. Anyway back to the site. Fantastic in all ways. And close to good eating places. We particularly loved the Nags Head at Hulland Ward. HUGE portions of homecooked food at sensible prices and really good beers. Friendly staff too. Little town of Ashbourne worth spending some time in there. Lovely art gallery with coffee shop. Couldnt say too much about family usage as we dont have kids with us, but there was a play park in the middle of the site.

Lovely Site

This is a wonderful site in a good location - only a short walk to the reservoir which could be seen from some of the pitches. We walked around the reservoir which was almost 9 miles door to door, but there is a visitors centre there for refreshments. The site also has a fantastic dog walk which runs through woodland around the edge of the site. Shower block excellent with plenty of showers. Easy to get to the site and Ashbourne is only a short drive for supermarkets. I am sure we will be back.

Fantastic Carsington!

As we live less than an hour away from this site we use it as our local getaway and usually visit around two or three times a year. The site is great for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers, we always find a nearby footpath that we have yet to discover. The site is in a very good position for visiting nearby Matlock, Bakewell and other pretty peak district villages along with numerous National Trust properties, it is only around half an hours drive to Alton Towers. The site is always kept clean and tidy by the hard working wardens, we have travelled hundreds of miles to other sites but always enjoy our local site just as much.
