Smart metering - use less, save more

New energy saving options that help you save more

As part of our roadmap we’re testing and trialing new ways to help our members and guests consume less electricity whilst staying on our UK Club campites with us. 

This page tells you about the smart-pitch metering we have in place at Steamer Quay Club campsite and Wyatts Covert Club campsite, plus, our ‘Non-electric Saver’, electricity ‘opt-out’ opportunity in place at our UK Club campsites which allows visitors to simply choose to use no electricity on any pitch, and save on pitch fees. On-pitch electric 'smart metering'

Many members and guests are keen for us to introduce on-pitch electric metering to help us lower campsite fees and put you in control of how much energy you use.

Our first ‘smart metering’ UK Club campsites are Wyatts Covert Club Campsite in Buckinghamshire and Steamer Quay Club campsite in Devon. 

Smart Metering gives members and guests direct control over the energy they use, encourages lower electricity consumption and allows us to set the lowest possible pitch fees. To date, smart-metering at Wyatts Covert has led to a reduced pitch electricity consumption of around 40%.

How does Smart Metering work?

Smart Metering enables us to measure the amount of electricity consumed by members and guests when plugging into the electrical hookup (socket on the bollard) allocated to your pitch. Similar to how many of us use a smart meter at home, we will only charge you for the precise amount of electricity you use. This allows us to reduce our campsite fees and puts you in control of how much electricity you use.

In addition to the ongoing trial at Wyatts Covert Club Campsite, we've added Steamer Quay to the smart metering trial. This is not the start of a larger roll out, but another opportunity for us to gather important information about member usage and feedback about metered pitches. Alongside this, we are working with our partner to help provide an improved and simplified member and guest journey through the smart metering app, alongside a new on site kiosk, which will be available at Wyatts Covert from 22 October, and at Steamer Quay from 12 November 2025.

Are site fees lower now that electricity is metered?

Yes. Wherever we have a smart-metered pitch, the pitch fee will have been adjusted to reflect the fact that electricity is paid by the member or guest separately.

How much can I expect to pay for electricity through the Smart Meter?  

You will only pay for what you consume, so the amount it costs will depend on your personal usage: using less means you save money.

The kWh charged to our members and guests will reflect the same costs that we are paying, with no additional charges other than VAT at 5% which is compulsory. As an organisation we do not benefit from any domestic energy pricing cap protections, and as such need to secure our energy based on business rates.

How it works - phase 2

Prior to your travel

Download the CAMC Electric App from your device's app store to speed up the connection process when you arrive. Open the app and click on the Account button, then enter your details to create an account.

Available on Android and Apple devices.

Once you’re at the campsite

To get started using the app:

  1. Select the campsite you are going to be staying at on the Electric app.
  2. Plug into the socket allocated to your pitch number.
  3. In the Electric app, click on “connect power”.
  4. Select the socket number you have plugged into.
  5. This will take you to the payment screen, where you also need to accept the terms of service.
  6. To turn the power on, you will need to enter payment details, or use Apple or Google Pay. This is the account that will be charged once you unplug from the socket.
  7. Once your payment method has been verified power will be turned on to your selected socket. You might see a nominal £1 value pending on your payment method which will not go out.

To get started using the kiosk:

  1. Plug your cable into the socket allocated to your pitch.
  2. Go to the central kiosk.
  3. Tap "connect power" and select your socket number.
  4. You'll be taken to the payment screen. Here, you'll need to accept the terms of service and use your chosen payment method to tap against the payment machine. This is the account that will be charged once you unplug.
  5. Once your payment method has been verified power will be turned on to your selected socket. You might see a nominal £1 value pending on your payment method which will not go out.

On both the app and the kiosk

  1. You will then be asked if you want to link this to your Electric account or treat it as a one-off session only.
  2. To link to your account, you will need to provide your account information (the email address or mobile number it was set up with).

Will my pitch fee reduce?

Yes. The pitch fee no longer includes the cost of electricity. This puts you in control, so you can save money and reduce your environmental impact.

Will someone be there to help?

Yes. Our site team will be on hand to help. The system has been designed to be intuitive and simple based on member feedback, so we hope you won't need much assistance.

Why is the electric unit cost more than I pay at home?

Club campsites are treated as commercial locations by electrical companies and are therefore subject to a higher charge rate than domestic properties.
