Things to do when Camping in North East England

If you are a lover of the sea and wildlife, take a boast trip to explore around the Farne Islands, famous for puffins and seals and many other species including shags, kittiwakes, razorbills, eider ducks and guillemots, depending on the time of year. Lindisfarne is a little further up the coast if you want to explore the tidal Holy Island.

Whitley Bay and the surrounding area has some lovely sandy beaches which you can explore while staying at Old Hartley Club Campsite with St Mary's Lighthouse just a short walk away, when the tide is out. There are plenty of beaches to choose from in and around Whitley Bay including Cullercoats Beach, Long Sands Beach and King Edward's Bay which is a little further down in Tyneside. 

If you are driving up the A1 heading to Tyneside you will see The Angel of the North, an incredible piece of art constructed in 1998. If you want to take a closer look you can get up close and walk round the giant structure, with its wing span of 54 metres and a height of 20 metres.

Durham Castle and UNESCO listed Cathedral, built in the late 11th century is a stunning example of Norman architecture. You can climb the 325 steps of the Central  Tower and be rewarded with the breathtaking views of the city below, see the Cathedral in Lego at the museum, or if you are a Harry Potter fan, you can see where some of the movies were filmed at the Catedral or visit Hogwarts at Alnwick Castle.
