Adequate site for a short stay

We stayed at the site for 3 nights in our motor home. The site is in a good location for exploring the area. We did a lovely bike ride along the canal from the site. Facilities are also good. However the site is very close to a major road so you get a lot of traffic noise all night. We were also put onto a vey small pitch that was one of 13 that were along the edge of the road into the site. No grass - it seemed as if they had converted car parking spaces into additional motor home plots.

Adequate stopover, but read reviews before booking so you know what to expect

Busy, transient site by the river. Well located for visiting Colmar and also the Alsace Wine Route, during our stopover we only managed to visit Kaysersberg and Riquewihr, absolutely beautiful. Also enjoyed little train tour of Colmar. Huge supermarket and fuel 800 metres away. Friendly welcome, reception team spoke good English. Fresh bread, croissant etc can be ordered from reception. Site was full, the three facilities blocks were fine. Pitches were level but vary from threadbare to overgrown on the same pitch There is a swimming pool, a games room and a play area. Parents should be mindful of fast flowing river and traffic moving on site. Few points to be aware of- Reception closes 12-2. This caused long queue down the drive from the security barrier of people waiting to check in. For anyone trying to return to site, suggest you drive down exit lane, get out and open barrier from other side. Lot of traffic noise, day and night Biggest single issue for us was the only access to fresh water is down near reception and in same box as waste water is emptied. Not hygienic or convenient. We would love to return to the area ti explore further but would possibly look for an alternative site

Pros and Cons - Good location, pity the basics are poor

First the positives. This is a convenient NH with easy access from A35 Junction 25. At the end of the slip road you can go either left through the town, or right as we did to avoid rush hour traffic. Some road noise is to be expected but this didn’t bother us. Reception was welcoming and helpful and forgiving of our poor French! The refurbished toilet blocks are first class and were being cleaned as we arrived. Washing up area and chemical toilet disposal also fine. We didn’t use the pool or the eatery so cannot comment on these. The negatives are the three points repeatedly raised by previous reviewers. Firstly, the only practical source of potable water is the motorhome service point at the site entrance and we were at the far end of this long site. We were told we could get drinking water from the nearby toilet block, but could not get a hose on the taps or get a decent sized container under them. Frustratingly there was a perfectly good tap on the outside wall, but this was locked off, for staff use only we assume. Secondly, there are no drains to take waste water. Distributing this on the ground is fine for a CL but not on a big site with outfits very close together and a significant number of long term residents. Thirdly, the pitch itself. This would have been impossible to access without a mover as the upper road is narrow and lined with trees on the pitch side and a steep bank on the other. The pitching area can best be described as scruffy. The surface was poor, any grass was long gone and replaced by slithery mud. A delivery of hardcore and a shovel would not come amiss! The surrounding grass was long and unkempt so not much sign of regular maintenance. We suggest that it is well worth paying the extra for a ‘Riverside’ pitch on the lower road, as these looked better. We found all of this just about tolerable for an overnight stop but if you are contemplating a longer stay do consider carefully whether for you the pros outweigh the cons. We booked this site, despite the mixed reviews, because it is listed in the Club’s Venture Abroad collection, which says ‘we handpick and inspect our sites so that we have 100% confidence in endorsing them for you’. There must be very good reasons for its inclusion but we left feeling that it didn’t do the Club’s reputation or image any favours.

Be sure of what you are booking

For closeness to the town centre it would be hard to fault this site. However, do be aware it is only separated from the main motorway, running through/past the town centre, by the adjacent river. As a result you can hear road noise across the site pretty much all of the time. Staff seemed friendly, and the shower/WC block clean - although getting hot water out of the shower furthest along the run, when others were showering, seemed impossible in the gents. Our expected enjoyment of this site was perhaps marred by the fact that it rained for one whole day when we were there; and very soon our pitch, and others, became waterlogged - and the mud followed you everywhere. Despite the evident tarting up of some subsidiary shower blocks going on, we felt some money should perhaps be spent on adding some/some more gravel/hardcore to most of the pitches! If you are happy to do without full campsite facilities the 'aire' at the nearby canal port may be a better bet? - still a bit noisy, but close to town and much cheaper.

Great location for Colmar

We’ve just got back from a 7-night stay at this site outside of Colmar. Two brand new toilet blocks have been added this season - in fact the second was being finished during our stay. Yes there is definitely road noise but you do get used to it. Some of the pitches could do with tidying up but the main point with this site is the close proximity to Colmar. We cycled the 1.5 kilometres almost every day and enjoyed the town each time. So many choices of places to visit, to eat, drink or just wander around. Would thoroughly recommend location if happy to use bus or cycle into Colmar and brilliant for the vineyards if got a car.

What a shambles!

The site sanitary blocks are relatively modern but dirty, the pool is ok and appears clean. The staff are helpful to a point but are not interested in accepting Club Vouchers using the excuse that if your pitch is next to the river then the pitch price is higher so the voucher won’t cover the cost. The riverside pitches have no fresh water taps or waste water drainage. The electric points are up a height because of flooding issues. The site is noisy due to nearby traffic, but then it is a city site. The onsite restaurant serves unimaginative fare such as burgers and chips etc. I am at a loss to understand why the Club doesn’t recommend the 4star site Pierre de Coubertin at Ribeauville it uses for its Wines of Alsace tour. Baffling!

Do your homework

This site is fine so long as you know what your getting. The bar/cafe is very good The staff are very good Being able to order fresh baked goods was great The pool looked very nice The location on the outskirts of Colmar ( a fair walk ) is good The pitches - they varied considerably- we had a riverside pitch at the very far end of the site, you needed a motor mover to get the best of the pitch. The main toilets block is fine, lots of loos and showers, clean and warm The block at the part of the site we were on left a lot to be desired - so I didn’t use it I walked to the main one. My husband not so picky used it. Yes you tipped waste water in the hedges, but that’s what they do in France, and Spain, different but not wrong. And finally There’s a huge supermarket very close by so shopping for wine and food was easy.

July 2018 - Lack of site maintenance

We stayed here for 11 days in July 2018. Weather was fantastic the whole time and the area is a wonderful area to explore by car / bike / on foot depending on distance. There are lots of lovely towns and villages especially those on the Alsace wine route. Colmar old town is a good place to visit with lots of eating places to choose from as was Strasbourg. Germany's Black Forest is within easy reach and well worth a visit. We were welcomed at the site reception and shown our pitch which actually turned out to be one of the better ones but was still well overgrown and under large trees so the van and car got filthy from the tree sap. I pitied those on the pitches that looked worse than ours of which there were many. The toilet blocks were cleaned in the mornings although they could have been cleaned more thoroughly to be honest. The showers were hot and you needed to press the button often to keep the flow of water going. Early in our stay, a high number of the men's toilets were broken and by the end of our stay there were still a number not operating fully. There was no dedicated water or waste water points. Water had to be taken from the taps in the laundry sinks, grey water tipped in the hedges not what many will be used to. The bar / restaurant was basic and a bit overpriced for what you were getting. We didn't use the pool but it looked well used by families so don't imagine there were any huge issues on that front. All in a great holiday that would have been better had the site been better. It is a bit disappointing that we put our trust and our holiday money in sites based upon what has supposedly been inspected prior to being added to the overseas sites brochure. I personally would not recommend this site but the area is great.....

Visit between 3rd and 9th April 2018

We found the staff helpful. The shower block was good and clean. Bread and croissants are available in the site reception. The only strange thing about the site is the single water tap. It is located in a large post type pull out hose feed unit (used for motor-caravans) in a section of hard standing used by motor-caravans, and it was a long way from our pitch. I used the tap in the toilet emptying room. Our pitch was on the upper section overlooking the river, with a lovely view. The lower section may be susceptible to being damper on occasion as it is closer to the river. During our stay we had the hottest and driest weather in Europe. We did not find the traffic noise disturbing, but you could hear it. The advantage of the site is its closeness to Colmar, and we were able to easily cycle into the city in 10 minutes. We enjoyed exploring the city on several days., We find that sites in Europe tend to be different to Caravan Club sites, and you just have to 'go with the flow' with some of their foibles. I would not put want to put other members off staying on this site, which has many advantages if you wish to visit this very interesting area.

Very Disappointing - The most expensive and worst site on our France fortnight

We were very disappointed in this site after staying at this Companies Angers site in July 2017 which was excellent. Our allocated pitch was small and narrow. After a period of heavy thunderstorms it was very muddy. The site was busy but not full. Many of the other pitches were even muddier. Despite being unable to use our ACSI card as we were "out of low season" the restaurant and one of the sanitation blocks were closed. There were no recognisable drinking water points, and we were told by a member of staff to get our water from the sanitation block "As it was city water and all good." There was considerable traffic noise from the nearby motorway and its access roads. There is a nearby bus stop with a good service into the centre of Colmar which is definitely worth a visit. We were told by one of our neighbours that they had been told they had to book for a minimum of three nights. We were very glad to leave after one, and will not stay here again until it has had a major upgrade. At 23euros44 it was the most expensive of our 14 night stay in France, and, by a long way, the worst.
