Not as Good as Expected

Having read the positive reviews of this site we decided to stay here for a couple of days on our way back to the channel ports. I am so glad I did not book for longer. I booked direct with the site and asked for a serviced pitch. Apparantely to get a serviced pitch you have to go on a premium pitch with a shed which contains deck chairs, a table and chairs, a parasol and BBQ. We were led to our pitch by a lady on foot who took us down a very narrow track to a pitch opposite the Motor Home service point and a toilet block. The pitch was badly chewed up by the previous users as there were ruts everywhere and the grass was very long. Not what I would expect for a premium pitch at over 50 euro a night. It was impossible to pitch a caravan on this pitch without the use of motor movers which we had but the muddy surface meant the tyres would not grip so pitching was difficult. Pitching was not helped by the 3 bushes that had been planted in front of the pitch which only left a narrow access either side of the bushes. Exiting the pitch at the end of our stay was just as difficult as our 8ft wide caravan was touching vegetation on both sides of the road. The nearest toilet block was old but clean enough, there are better ones on other parts of the site. The restaurant and Cafe were good so we enjoyed our meal in the restairant and our trips to the Cafe for drinks. Having walked around the site, it was clear that we had one of the worst pitches and we would have done better to select a standard pitch rather then the so called premium pitchs. It may be that if you book via the Club you will get one of the better pitches but it was a last minute decision to stay here so booking direct was the only option. We have stayed at several better and cheaper sites in Normandy so will not be returning here.

Welcome to a real French family holiday.

The sort of site you dream about. The Manager and his family and staff were wonderful, they bent over backwards to help you enjoy yourself and made you feel so “one of the family”. Yes the grass on the pitches was not quite the regulation bowling green length, but it was all so wonderfully relaxed. Loved the wandering chickens, the apple trees, the great restaurant and bar, the sensible prices, the two free music evenings we had, the fantastic pool, the fishing/boating lake, the free b-b-as. The visiting families were so relaxed and welcoming, the kids were clearly loving the freedom. I can’t wait to go back.

Gorgeous site

Our 2nd time at Le Brevedent as we loved it so much the first time and hope to return again. Good location before getting the Caen ferry. Each time managed to have a pitch right by the lake, to watch the fish jumping, ducks, chickens and heron flying in. Love the rustic and laid back feel, with the location of the lake and buildings. Had 2 good meals in the restaurant. Huge modern showers, big enough to share! Good shop with local items for last minute presents. Friendly staff. Lovely pool.

Contradicting current reviews

I have read previous reviews and feel with some of the comments that we visited a different site. Rustic yes but we would have expected pitch grass cut before our arrival. Toilets, although basically clean, had a distinct smell of urine. The showers were large but no where to hang anything out of range of water spray. Push button water delivery needed pressing too often and in some showers the press button was hard to find especially when you have a face full of soap. Whilst there I witnessed young children in wellingtons running in and out of showers (not site but parenting problem) We were there for 4 nights and on 2 mornings there was no hot water in the shower block. No explanations as to why and no directions to other facilities. I feel that the washing up area is lacking in sinks as there are a lot of tents on site using these facilities . Whilst it is a good idea to teach children how to wash up, not a good idea when there is a queue for the sinks. The road down to the pitches was somewhat on the steep side and overgrown in places especially for a large van. Also perhaps a mirror opposite the site exit would make it safer when exiting as the hedging obstructs the view. I feel this site is more suited to tents and young families.

Rustic France at it’s best

A lovely site set around an old Château in the woods located in the green Calvados countryside. If you are looking for well marked pitches, manicured hedges and neatly mown grass then this site is not for you. We loved it’s unkempt appearance and would describe it as traditionally French rustic style. We loved it. The pitches are set randomly (but marked out individually) in the grounds of the Château including the orchard as well as around a small lake. There is a lovely open air swimming pool which we didn’t use but it seemed popular with adults and children alike. The outbuildings have been put to good use with reception and a well stocked small shop in one, cafe and one of three toilet blocks in another with a lovely restaurant occupying the third. The Château itself houses a cosy bar on the ground floor. There is plenty to do locally with the old city of Pont Eveque close by as is the cathedral city of Lisieux. Further afield the lovely coastal towns of Honfleur and Deauville are little over 30 minutes drive away with lovely sea fronts and beaches. Further afield the D Day landing beaches can be reached in no more than an hours drive. WiFi is only available on the green in front of the cafe so everyone tends to congregate in that area whether the cafe, bar or shop is open. This is a family run site, now into the 5th generation and they are deeply passionate about the environment and do everything within the site to minimise waste and promote recycling and reuse as well as energy and water reduction. They should be applauded for their commitment to this cause. We shall be back.

What a lovely place to stay

Spent 5 nights here a week ago. 2 adults pitched overlooking the lake - very nice! Great history with a lovely chateau on site. Good electric, decent sized pitches, lots of direct sun or shade from trees so whatever you like in that department! Fishing and boating on the lake if that's your thing too. Nice level pitches with only a little adjustment required. Wash/toilet facilities top notch. Very French being shared (not boys/girls) but not awkward (for us easily embarrassed British), showers very big and private, loos very clean and nice to use, washing up areas equally so. And modern so you actually want to use them. Location - a bit of travelling to the areas attractions is required but bearing in mind the peaceful location this for us was not a problem. We went to the D Day beaches etc during our visit and we were left in awe by the stuff we saw and did. If your holiday requirements are a quiet quality campsite with helpful English speaking staff and some interesting history then you will not be disappointed. Its not for the nightclub lovers. But that in our opinion makes it all the better!!!

Best site ever

The upgraded toilet facilities have made this site better than ever. The music nights are excellent and the restaurant cannot be faulted. The welcome is of the very best, nothing is too much trouble for the staff who go out of their way to assist.

Revisited after some years

We visited this site several times a start point ot a holiday when our family was young. They have now flown so a bit of a nostalgia trip. And- much as it was really. One toilet block still being refurbished, other could have been cleaner compared to some later used. Bar seemed a little disorganised compared to what it was. Nice walks- but a bit wet from recent heavy rain. That's Normandy! Pick you site- no problem if you use common sense- plenty of big flat pitches. Good start point to get into the holiday spirit Easy access to Lisieux or Pont L'eveque

Lovely site

First time taking 3 year old on a camping trip abroad to include a sea crossing. Close to port so easy to reach before boredom set in. Set in lovely countryside with beautiful wood and lake as part of the site. Pitches available on lake edge and beautifully peaceful. The 2 service blocks were very clean but a little tired and the 3rd block was closed for refurbishment - nearly finished and looked good. 2 lovely play areas for children both which could be viewed while sitting by restaurant or cafe enjoying a drink & meal or accessing the wifi. Pool lovely and clean with the toddler pool very safely away from the main pool. The pens of chickens, rabbits & guinea pigs a great hit for the children. Staff very friendly and helpful. Shop limited but adequate. Very close by was one of the best zoos you could go to. No public transport to go anywhere, as appears to be normal in France. Will be going back next year.

Beautiful site

We had a great welcome to this lovely site and were able to choose our own pitch from a range of grassy well kept pitches. Facilities were good, new block opening soon too. Pool heated and good size with children's play pool. Great last night when the host treated us all to a night of excellent French singing and playing in the chateau.
