Rooftop tent adventures in North Wales

Nadine enjoys a rooftop tent adventure at Coed-y-Llwyn in the beautiful North Wales countryside.

There’s nothing quite like packing up the TentBox and heading into the mountains for a weekend of fresh air and freedom. Our latest escape took us to Coed-y-Llwyn, a Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nestled just outside Ffestiniog in North Wales – and spoiler alert – it was an absolute gem for rooftop tent adventures.

We stayed for two nights and could easily have stayed longer. The site is perfectly placed for exploring Snowdonia and the surrounding areas, with the famous Ffestiniog Railway right on the doorstep and endless options for walking, biking, and sightseeing.

What really stood out for us was how welcoming the site was for rooftop tent campers. We booked a non-electric hardstanding pitch. We chose a lovely secluded spot tucked between two lines of trees – peaceful, private, and with just the right wild camping vibe (without actually roughing it). The pitches were spacious, and even though the site was popular, everything felt nicely spread out.

After setting up camp, we took a wander around and were genuinely impressed with the facilities. The toilet and shower block was spotless and super modern – plenty of toilets, basins, and showers to go around. There was even a washer and dryer, washing-up stations, and a handy dog and bike wash area complete with tools. If you’re travelling with your pup, there’s a designated dog walking area too, and even a playpark for the kids.

One of the best surprises was discovering the local pub just a short stroll from the site – a perfect spot to grab a warm drink when the Welsh weather turned on us. Hot chocolate in hand, we cosied up and waited for the drizzle to pass.

The highlight of the trip had to be hopping aboard the Woodland Wanderer at the Ffestiniog Railway. We lucked out with a first-class carriage all to ourselves – comfy seats, big windows, and some of the best scenery Wales has to offer rolling past. It was the kind of slow travel experience that really sticks with you.
