Ferry Meadows Club Campsite? Here’s our guide to an idyllic spot on the outskirts of Peterborough...

If you’ve never stayed, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Ferry Meadows is simply a handy place for an overnight stop, given its proximity to the A1/A1(M). Indeed, it is convenient for many who are making longer journeys north or south. But those who have visited know that this large but peaceful site is actually the perfect place to unwind. A place where you can enjoy the local wildlife – anything from crickets and herons to rabbits and parakeets – and explore the country park on your doorstep.

Site staff were understandably keen to highlight the many attractions of Nene Park, within which the campsite sits. Guests can enjoy lakes, great views, traffic-free walks, cycling, boat trips and watersports (seasonal), while there is also a cafe, a restaurant and bar, a miniature railway and a separate station at which you can jump on board the Nene Valley Railway, a heritage line boasting steam and diesel-powered services.

Factor in the play area on site and the variety of visiting food trucks (pizza, curry, fish and chips, etc), and you could easily fill a weekend at Ferry Meadows without straying more than two miles from your pitch!

“We attract all kinds of members who enjoy the great outdoors, lots of dogs and families, especially at weekends and school holidays,” says Site Manager Sam, on behalf of the team. “We have been known to have over 150 arrivals on a Friday, which can bring its challenges, but with a fast-track check-in we keep everyone moving and smiling.”

This season, members have been encouraged to share their photos from Nene Park and on the Nene Valley Railway, with beautiful pictures from those staying depicting kingfishers and even The Flying Scotsman.

If you did want to wander a bit further, Peterborough’s city centre is only four miles away, so many choose to walk or cycle in. “There is a stunning cathedral and museum, both free to visit,” says Sam (although note that special events and exhibitions at the museum incur a cost, and Peterborough Cathedral welcomes donations).

“The recently renovated Queensgate centre has a great range of shops and an IMAX cinema and indoor games, along with a range of bars and restaurants,” Sam points out. “For something a little different, Charters Bar barge situated on the river often has live music and beer festivals to enjoy.”

We still haven’t strayed too far from the campsite. Day trips to King’s Lynn, Cambridge, Ely and Stamford might also appeal, but rest assured that if you want to park, set-up your outfit and indulge in some quality R&R, then Ferry Meadows Club Campsite is a super option. Stay a while here and you’ll certainly reap the rewards.
