Extremadura is a remote, historic, and rural region in southwestern Spain, known for its unspoiled landscapes, rich history, including Roman and Moorish influences, and the monumental cities associated with the Spanish Conquistadors. It offers a unique experience of authentic rural life and is a haven for nature lovers - birdwatchers, with vast natural areas and stunning, clear skies, yet it remains largely undiscovered by international tourism.

The region offers a refreshing alternative to crowded coastal beaches with its numerous freshwater bathing areas and natural swimming pools.

Major towns and cities

  • Mérida - It's a vibrant historical destination, famous for its remarkably preserved Roman past, which forms the heart of its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Archaeological Ensemble. It offers a unique blend of ancient history and modern life, where Roman monuments like the Theater and Amphitheater are still in use and visible throughout the city.   • Cáceres - Was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of the city's blend of Roman, Moorish, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. Thirty towers from the Islamic period still stand in Cáceres, of which the Torre del Bujaco is the most famous.
  • Badajoz - The largest city and provincial capital in Extremadura, known for its Moorish citadel, hot-dry climate, Iberian ham, and proximity to the Portuguese border, which influences its culture and economy. The city offers a unique blend of historical sites, such as the large Alcazaba, with modern industrial and agricultural sectors, alongside vibrant cultural events like its well-known Carnival.

  • Monfragüe Castle - Built by the Arabs in the early 9th century to defend the passages over the Tagus River, this ancient fortress is full of history and legends and affords impressive views of the Monfragüe National Park.
  • Temple of Diana (Mérida) - Located in the heart of Mérida, the Roman Temple of Diana is one of the most impressive architectural examples on the Iberian Peninsula. Renowned for being the best-preserved temple in the region, this monument is not only a relic of history, but also a living testimony to the different stages through which the city has passed.
  • Historic Center of Cáceres - Was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, is an outstanding testament of medieval architecture. It is the third best conserved medieval site in Europe, rivalled only by the Old Towns of Prague and Tallinn. The walled Old Town stands at the heart of Cáceres and is a remarkable example of a 12th-century Moorish fortification.
  • Alcazaba Badajoz - An ancient Moorish citadel and the largest in Spain, built mainly by the Almohads in the 12th century. Perched on a hill overlooking the Guadiana River, the fortress offers panoramic views of the city and was strategically important due to its location near the Portuguese border.

How do I book an overseas site?

Overseas campsite bookings can easily be made on the Club website and "combined deals" are common when you book a campsite at the same time as your ferry crossing. Booking online means you save the £20 Contact Centre booking fee.

Does the Club take deposits for overseas bookings?

Yes, deposits for overseas bookings are calculated at 20% for a site and 25% for a ferry (unless it is a non-refundable ferry/Eurotunnel in which case full payment is due at time of booking). The final balance is due 10 weeks prior to travel.

Is the standard of overseas sites similar to that of the UK?

European campsites are star-rated by their own local authorities and can have different standards and regulations to the UK. However, the Club's travel team handpick and inspect our campsites so that members can be sure of a high standard.
