I have an excess on my Caravan Cover/insurance policy, what does this mean?
In the event of a claim, the excess is the contribution you must make towards the cost of your claim.
I’ve offered to be a volunteer and will be using my car. Does my car insurance policy cover me?
Your policy automatically covers you when you are doing voluntary work. In the current situation in relation to COVID 19 that means you are covered if the vehicle is being used for voluntary purposes to transport medicines or groceries to support people affected by COVID-19. If you are transporting people as a volunteer, please contact our partner broker, Devitt Insurance Services, for advice before doing so. Under no circumstances should you offer your vehicle for hire or reward (i.e., payment for these services). That would invalidate your cover.

Is our European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) still accepted in Europe?
UK EHIC's remain valid until their expiry date within the EU and Switzerland but not in Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland. Once an EHIC expires you can replace it with a UK Global Health Insurance Card which provides the same access to state-provided healthcare during your holiday in an EU country and Switzerland but not Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland. This is not an alternative to Travel Insurance but can provide basic medical care and some insurance companies waive excess charges if you use your EHIC/GHIC. For more information see: Apply for a free GHIC
What's the difference between caravan insurance and Caravan Cover from the Caravan and Motorhome Club?
The main difference between traditional caravan insurance policies and our Caravan Cover is that as we are a membership organisation we have been able to establish a product where all aspects of cover are dealt with by the Club.
For example we are responsible for all claims and can exercise discretion on claims settlements. This does not mean all claims will be paid - but you would be dealing with the Club rather than a third party organisation and so you can appeal directly to the Club if you feel your claim should be paid.
The Club takes on the liability for your caravan and we're able to do this because caravan insurance is voluntary, not legally required cover and the Club’s Caravan Cover is not an insurance product.
Will my insurance increase/decrease?
We cannot speak for individual insurances and would recommend that you get in contact with your outfit’s insurance provider to discuss potential storage arrangements as part of your decision making process.
Some insurances use a postcode risk factor and you may find your cost increases or decreases according to how much risk that insurer associates with the postcode area the site is in.
What's the difference between Caravan Cover from the Caravan and Motorhome Club and caravan insurance?
Caravan Cover is a discretionary mutual product that provides financial protection to members should their caravan, Contents and/or Equipment be stolen or damaged either by accident, fire, theft, storm, vandalism or flood.
It has been designed for your caravanning lifestyle by a Club that truly cares and understands your passion to get away and enjoy the great outdoors. For more information on how a discretionary mutual differs from insurance see here or full details of the features and benefits of our Caravan Cover please see our dedicated page here.
Does using breakdown cover affect insurance?
No, your breakdown cover and your vehicle insurance are completely separate, even if they are being provided by the same company. However, following an accident, you may need to use your breakdown cover before making a repair claim under your vehicle insurance.
Are there any restrictions in the Group insurance policy?
The Group Insurance Policy taken out by the Club reflects the Caravan Cover provided to members - we feel it’s important that the cover is mirrored to ensure members have the right protection. However, to provide that protection there are some scenarios the insurer of the Group policy is not happy to include - these are generally risks that are very unlikely to occur but the insurer considers could be huge if they were to materialise. Where these apply they are duplicated in the Caravan Cover document, so members are aware of them.
My Motorhome and Campervan Insurance policy is up for renewal, but I can’t use my motorhome / campervan, so can I defer my policy?
No, deferment is not an option for this policy. If you have any queries about your policy ahead of renewal, please contact our partner broker, Devitt Insurance Services, and they will help you to renew your cover.

I’ve SORNed my motorhome. What should I do about my comprehensive insurance policy?
If you have SORNed your motorhome or campervan it is worth remembering that your motorhome insurance policy provides cover for fire, theft, flood and storm damage, so it is worth keeping your policy live even if you are no longer planning to use your vehicle on the road in the near future. Additionally, if you have borrowed money to help you to buy your motorhome and you are continuing to make repayments, your finance provider will usually insist that you maintain full insurance cover in force until you have paid off the loan. Having considered all of the implications, if you wish to discuss your options, please contact our partner broker, Devitt Insurance Services.

I was away from home when we were required to stop travelling / self isolate. As a result my home is going to be unoccupied for more than 90 days. Will my home insurance policy cover me if anything happens?
We appreciate some people will be unable to get back to their homes as a result of the restrictions in place. Your home insurance policy will continue to cover you if your home is unoccupied for more than 90 days as a result of the current situation. You must arrange to get home as soon as possible after the travel restrictions have been lifted and you are well enough to do so.
Do I have to be a member to take out Caravan Cover or insurance?
Anyone can get a quote online or by phone, but you will need to become a member of the Club to purchase cover.
What is caravan insurance?
Caravan insurance is a voluntary, additional insurance that covers your caravan and its contents against accidental damage, fire, and theft.
Do I need caravan insurance?
No, although the third party liability cover would normally be provided by your car insurance when the caravan is towed on a public highway, this only protects you against your third party liability.
Importantly - your caravan and everything inside it may not be covered. Caravan insurance (and the Club's Caravan Cover, which is different from traditional caravan insurance) protects you against financial loss should your caravan and its contents be lost, stolen or damaged.
Is my caravan covered by my car insurance policy?
Car insurance will not cover any damage to your caravan or if your caravan was stolen. Car insurance will only cover any liability while you are towing a caravan or trailer - this means if your caravan causes damage or injures someone while you are towing it your car insurance will pay a claim from the third party. Car insurance also wouldn't cover a claim from a third party if your caravan injured someone or caused damage while you were manouvering with a motor mover or by hand on a site or in a storage compound, where Caravan Cover would.

There are a number of products and services that are only available to members. If you have one of these and you cancel your membership you’ll be notified before your product renewal date that your cover will cease unless you take out a new membership.
What products, services and insurances does the Club have?
We provide a wide range of products and services that are designed with touring and members in mind.

Do I need Caravan Cover or Insurance?
While there is no legal requirement for protection, accidents do happen - both to stored caravans and while out touring. Replacing or repairing caravans can be very expensive, so to make sure you aren't left out of pocket and can continue to enjoy the great outdoors you should consider taking out financial protection for your caravan.
What insurance and financial services does the Caravan and Motorhome Club offer?
As well as Caravan Cover, the Club offers a range of insurance products including Motorhome and Campervan Insurance, Car Insurance, Home Insurance, Bike and Ebike Insurance and Red Pennant Travel Insurance, as well as MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover and MAYDAY European Breakdown Cover. Are the website's online facilities accessible to joint members?
Joint members can register to use the Club’s online forum, Club Together, and write reviews. Only the Lead member can book sites online, use outfit matching, take out insurance and manage the membership.
Is there any difference to documentation I need to take on holiday?
See separate text for specifics on passports, driving licences, insurance documents, pet passports and EHIC. In general, not knowing what the enforcement regimes will be post Brexit, we feel it is prudent to check that you have all relevant documentation with you and ensure it is up to date, e.g. V5 vehicle registration document etc.
Visit the Club's Useful Information section for more.
I won’t be using my motorhome/campervan, so will I automatically get a refund for the time it’s not been in use?
No. This is because your insurance policy still provides cover for fire, theft, third-party impact, flood and storm damage. If you anticipate a significant change in use as a result of the current restrictions, please contact our partner broker, Devitt Insurance Services.
To support Devitt at this time we would ask that where possible you make contact with them by email on: contactus@devittinsurance.com, or via the Livechat facility on Devitt’s website: www.devittinsurance.com. What happens if I cancel due to exceptional circumstances?
In the first instance members should claim through their travel insurance. Of course, as a membership organisation we will sensitively manage cancellations due to exceptional circumstances.
If the Cover is discretionary, how am I protected?
To ensure our members have peace of mind when buying our Caravan Cover, we’ve taken out a Group insurance policy in the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s name to provide additional protection for members. The Group policy is the second layer of protection that members are able to claim under in the unlikely event the Club does not pay a claim or does not pay in full, as long as it’s covered under the terms and conditions of the Group insurance policy, which mirrors the Caravan Cover. (A copy of the Group insurance policy is available on request.)
What are the benefits of joining the Caravan and Motorhome Club?

Whose gadgets are covered and where?
The person who is named as the policyholder in the Insurance Schedule and their immediate family – e.g. mother, father, son, daughter, spouse, domestic partner who resides at the same address as them.
The gadget is covered for up to 90 days abroad within any 12 month period. Replacement or repair can only be dealt with once you are back in the UK.
I want to travel outside the EU, is my cover still valid?
Yes, our Caravan Cover is valid overseas for up to 182 days per year, our Car Insurance is valid in the EU and associated countries for up to 270 days, and our Motorhome/Campervan Insurance valid in the EU and associated countries for 365 days a year.
However, it is important to check your policy wording to make sure that the cover you take out on any of your vehicles is adequate for your purposes. We would also recommend you also check what documentation you may need when driving abroad, including the International Certificate of Motor Insurance, also known as a 'Green Card'.
You can find full details here.
What's different about the new website?
What happens if my touring vehicle gets damaged in storage?
You should always make sure that you have adequate insurance protection against events which could happen to your caravan at any time, this includes whilst in a storage compound e.g. flood, theft or damage.
If a third party were to damage your outfit whilst it is in the storage compound you may be able to recover the cost of any repair from the negligent third party provided adequate proof is available and they accept liability.
How do I make a Caravan Cover claim?
Information on how to make a claim can be found on our Documents and Claim Guidance page here, where you can download the relevant claim forms. You can also call the claims team on 01908 892 318. for further advice. If you need to claim on Motorhome, Campervan, Car or Home Insurance you can call 0345 604 4461.
Why should I get Caravan Cover?
Simply put, for peace of mind! Your caravan is most likely to be one of the most valued things you own. Which means, if your caravan was stolen or damaged, you could be left with a large financial loss, for either repairs or buying a replacement. Plus there is a risk of public liability claims. Car insurance can cover liabilities caused while towing, but once your caravan is detached any damage to property or injury to a person as a result of your ownership/use of the caravan would be your responsibility. And these liabilities have the potential to be very costly, which is why Caravan Cover provides liability cover up to £5m.
The Club has 50 years of experience in providing protection to its members and their caravans and we are a trusted membership organisation rated 9 out of 10 by our members for Caravan Cover claims handling - based on Caravan Cover Claims data 1 January to 31 December 2024. For more information on Caravan Cover or to get a quote please click here.

Please contact our partner broker, Devitt Insurance Services to update your policy details and make sure your vehicle remains covered. Please note a mid-term adjustment fee will apply, see www.devittinsurance.com/caravan-club-caravan-insurance/ for details.

Are there any restrictions for travelling to Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain and Portugal?
Yes, the FCDO advises against non-essential travel to Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg and anyone arriving into the UK from Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg must self-isolate for 14 days. Anyone travelling to Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg will be doing so against FCDO advice, which invalidates most insurance policies.
All arrivals to Spain by sea are asked to complete an online health form before arrival at the Spanish port, more details at www.spth.gob.es. Note this doesn't need to be completed if arriving at a land border. All arrivals to Belgium will need to complete an online passenger locator form within 48 hours of arrival to Belgium (exempt if total stay in Belgium is less than 48 hours) More details at https://diplomatie.belgium.be/en/services/travel_to_belgium
Everyone will also need to complete a passenger locator form for the UK authorities within 48 hours prior to your arrival at the UK border. Visit this website for details: https://www.gov.uk/provide-journey-contact-details-before-travel-uk
