Understanding Motorhome and Campervan Insurance
We explain the reasons why you should consider specialist cover for your motorhome or campervan.

As we gear up for another season of adventure across the UK and Europe, ensuring your outfit is properly protected is just as important as checking your tyre pressures.
While we all hope for smooth journeys, having the right insurance designed for your motorhome or campervan provides the peace of mind to truly enjoy the great outdoors.
Why specialist cover matters
Unlike standard van insurance, specialist motorhome and campervan policies are designed with the needs of the touring community in mind.
Buying just a van insurance policy may leave you without sufficient protection.
Here’s why choosing a good motorhome and campervan policy can make a difference:
- New for old cover
If you have a brand new or nearly new outfit, it may be worth checking if the insurance provider offers new for old cover. As many specialist policies offer "new for old" replacement for vehicles up to 24 months old, ensuring you aren't left out of pocket if the worst should happen early in the vehicle’s life. - Personal effects cover
From your favourite outdoor chairs to the portable TV, your "home away from home" is full of kit. Therefore, make sure your insurance has enough cover, as all this stuff adds up.
The Club’s Motorhome and Campervan insurance cover includes up to £5,000 for personal effects and equipment. - European touring
If you’re planning a hop across the Channel, make sure your insurance has you covered. Some will not cover you for such trips or will charge you extra, and may even have time limits.
With our insurance, we provide extensive cover, up to 365 days for journeys within the EU, allowing you to explore further for longer. - Emergency accommodation
Should your vehicle become uninhabitable following an accident, you don’t want to be left without a roof over your head miles away from home. So make sure your policy can cover the costs of emergency overnight accommodation.
Our insurance will allow you to claim back the cost of a hotel if you are left without the use of your motorhome or campervan while away. - Club event protection
We know that many of our members enjoy our rallies and national events, so make sure your cover offers protection when attending such events.
Our insurance offers cover while you are attending any Caravan and Motorhome Club organised event as standard.
Defaqto rating
Not all motorhome or campervan insurance policies are built equally. And all those different cover limits and features can be overwhelming. To help choose a policy that is right for you, Defaqto ratings can help.
Defaqto helps buyers choose an insurance product, beyond just price. They evaluate the quality and comprehensiveness of a policy's features. Defaqto provides expert, unbiased Star Ratings (1-5, where 5 is Execellent) that allow buyers to assess the level of coverage a policy offers at a glance. To help ensure you get the best level of protection for your needs. So when comparing options, make sure you know what the star rating of the policy is before buying.
Our insurance has a five-star Defaqto rating, the best that can be achieved. Giving you the peace of mind that our insurance is a quality product.
Navigating exclusions
All insurance policies, including the Club's, have standard exclusions. Knowing these common exclusions prevents unwelcome surprises during a claim. Insurance offers financial protection against the unexpected, but not for general wear and tear or maintenance costs.
Common exclusions:
- Wear and tear: Cover is for accidental damage, theft, injury, and liability from incidents, not gradual deterioration, mechanical failure, or vermin damage.
- Standard window exclusions: Windscreens are typically covered for accidents/break-ins; repairs often don't affect No-Claims Discount. Plastic, acrylic, or laminate windows may have different policy terms and higher excesses.
- Unsecured items: High-value items should always be kept out of sight when you are away from your vehicle. Your vehicle must be fully locked with all windows and skylights securely closed.
- Business vs. private use: Policies are for personal touring; business or trade use is a standard exclusion. Commercial policies are needed for business use.
- Mileage usage: Tip: Always check your Estimated Annual Mileage. Exceeding your limit can impact cover; notify your provider if you tour more than planned.
