For many people new to touring, the idea of manoeuvring a large vehicle can feel like the biggest barrier to getting started. Questions around safety, control and, perhaps most commonly, reversing can be enough to dent confidence before the journey has even begun.
That’s exactly why the training courses offered by the Caravan and Motorhome Club play such an important role in helping members build skills, knowledge and, crucially, confidence from the outset.
To understand what these courses are really like, I joined my friend Michele as she attended a recent manoeuvring course.
A key strength of the course is the opportunity to practise repeatedly in a controlled environment. With no pressure from other drivers and expert guidance on hand, learners can focus purely on developing their skills.
By the end of the session, Michele’s mindset had shifted noticeably. Where there had been nerves, there was now enthusiasm. She described herself as “excited” and, importantly, felt ready to pitch up at a campsite.
This transformation highlights the real value of a manoeuvring course—not just teaching technique, but changing how people feel about touring.
When asked how important a course like this is for beginners, Michele’s response was clear: “Very important—everyone should do it.”
With time to practise a range of manoeuvres, expert instruction and a supportive environment, these courses provide a solid foundation for safe and enjoyable touring.
For anyone feeling unsure, Michele’s advice is simple: “Go ahead and do it—it’s not as bad as you think.”
Learning motorhome manoeuvring is a significant milestone, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating one. With the right guidance, it becomes a skill that opens the door to greater freedom and enjoyment on the road.
As Michele summed up her experience in just two words: “Fun and confidence.”
And for many new tourers, that’s exactly what a manoeuvring course delivers.
