Registering your caravan - your answers
In the last Club Safety and Security newsletter we asked you to tell us about CRiS registration - here’s a summary of the responses we received.
We were delighted to find that over 90% of caravan owners who responded told us their caravan is CRiS registered.
Reasons why some members haven't CRiS registered their caravan:
- Plan to do so but haven't got around to it yet
- Unsure how to register
- Cost of the registration fee
- Value of caravan
Nearly 74% of you told us that you had bought a second-hand caravan; however, only 47% of those carried out a CRiS check before making the purchase.
Over 81% of members go on caravanning trips outside the UK, with 60% carrying CRiS documentation.
And 65% of members told us that they had sold a caravan, of which 30% didn’t notify CRiS of the sale.
Who is CRiS?
CRiS is the National Register of UK touring caravan keepers, similar to the DVLA for motor vehicles. It is recognised by most regulatory bodies, cover/insurance providers and nearly all Police forces.
Why is CRiS registration important for caravan owners?
- Proves you are the registered keeper.
- Links a caravan’s unique 17-digit VIN to a CRiS keeper record.
- Assists police and other law enforcement agencies in finding and identifying stolen outfits.
- CRiS have introduced VIN CHIP®, the new industry standard in touring caravan identification, which uses a caravan’s unique VIN within both visible and invisible VIN CHIP® Elements.
- Many caravan cover/insurance providers now require CRiS registration before processing a claim.
- Helps manufacturer product recalls and warranty.

How much does it cost to register my caravan with CRiS?
CRiS registration is a one-off fee for the lifetime that you are registered as the keeper of the outfit. The fee is £20.95.
If you are registering a brand new caravan please refer to the dealer you purchased the caravan from as this notification needs to be submitted by them.
Why get a CRiS check when buying a second-hand caravan?
A CRiS check (£17.95) will provide you with an accepted industry standard history check on any pre-owned touring caravan by checking:
- If a caravan has been reported as stolen to the police
- If it has been recorded with outstanding finance
- If it has been written off by a cover/insurance provider
- If it is already registered with a named keeper, please be aware that CRiS cannot release their name unless they have the authority to do so.
You do not have to be registered with CRiS to purchase a CRiS check.
How can I carry out a CRiS check?
OR
How do I notify CRiS about a sale or transfer?
OR
There is no fee for making CRiS aware of a sale or transfer.
Why is it essential to carry CRiS documentation whilst abroad?
If your outfit needs to be recovered by a third-party agent, they will need to show border control proof of ownership which can cause delays without proof of the registered keeper.
The responses from our members highlight the importance of CRiS registration in protecting caravan owners and ensuring peace of mind when buying, selling, or travelling abroad. Whether you are registering a new caravan, checking the history of a second-hand purchase, or updating ownership details, CRiS plays a crucial role in safeguarding your investment. If you have not registered your caravan yet, now is the perfect time to do so, helping to protect your vehicle and contribute to a more secure caravanning community.
