Motorhome Security and Safety - March 2025 Poll Reveal

In our last newsletter, we asked you to tell us about the safety and security you use on your motorhomes and campervans. Here’s a summary of what you told us.

We had 231 responses, of which 59 (25%) told us they do not have an alarm on their vehicle.

Of those who do, over 50% had it fitted as an ‘aftermarket’ accessory by a dealer or a professional, while 40% had it installed pre-purchase at the factory. Less than 6% of you fitted an alarm system yourselves.

Well over half of you (57%) told us you have some form of wheel clamp, with Milenco and Bulldog being by far the two most popular brands, accounting for nearly 50% of all responses; while just over 75% of you also said you use a steering lock on your vehicle, with Milenco again being the most popular brand.

Over 70% of you also use a tracker on your vehicle, although a small percentage (3.5%) admitted to not having the tracker service active!

We also asked if you're planning to change or improve any of your security arrangements for your van in the next 12 months. We had 67 positive responses to this question, and the range of answers was widespread, but more popular responses included:

  • fitting an alarm (where one isn’t currently fitted)
  • investing in wheel and/or steering locks
  • fitting (or looking into fitting) foot pedal locks.

When we asked you to rank which aspects you thought had the most impact on security, your responses confirmed the ‘big three’, with trackers, alarms and wheel locks/clamps scoring significantly higher than all other categories - although window locks also scored quite strongly.

Finally, we asked you to share your top security tips with us, and 119 of you did just that, with the most offered advice centred around ensuring as much of your security was visible to would-be thieves; making sure you engage all your security devices whenever you leave the vehicle unattended, no matter how short the stay; and adding an extra high-security lock on the habitation door of the vehicle.

It was also noted that many insurance policies introduce more stringent security requirements (in particular the requirement to have a working tracker) as the value of the vehicle goes up. So keep an eye out for this at your next renewal.
