The Meek family attempt 20 holidays in 20 weeks

21/05/2014

It has become a fact of modern life that many children now spend more time watching TV and playing computer games than enjoying the outdoors and doing things together as a family, so, together The Caravan Club and Elddis have decided to try and encourage families back into the great outdoors with this challenge.

The Meek family from Arnold, Nottingham, hit the headlines at the end of 2013 for being the parents that set their two girls (Amy 10 and Ella 8) 100 outdoor challenges in an attempt to draw them away from the TV. They undertook activities such as rock climbing, building a campfire, sleeping in a bivvy and spotting a red squirrel; they completed all 100 challenges in a year. The family are passionate about the outdoor lifestyle and are now ambassadors for the cause, regularly talking at events and blogging to support and encourage other families.

The challenge will see them attempt to complete 20 caravan holidays across the UK and into Europe, within 20 weeks, while undertaking a further 100 activities along the way. Should they complete the challenge within the allotted timescale, they will win the Elddis Xplore 574 caravan that they have borrowed for the task!

They will stay on a mix of Caravan Club sites, with facilities such as showers and food prep areas, and the more remote and wild Caravan Club Certificated Location (CL) sites, which are maximum five van sites nestled on land including farms, stately homes and even pub gardens!

The Xplore 574 is the perfect family van with an end washroom; single beds in a separate sleeping area; a very practical kitchen and a good size double bed. Now named ‘Ellie the Elddis’ after a character in the movie ‘UP’, (who was a free spirit who loved to travel and who has greatly inspire the girls), the caravan will be the family of four and Sally the dog’s home-from-home throughout the challenge.

They collected ‘Ellie’ on 8 May from Derby Caravan Centre and spent their first night and “Holiday Number 1” at a CL nearby in Woodborough, Nottingham,  Followed by “Holiday Number 2” at a CL in Beccles, Suffolk.

Of the challenge, dad, Tim Meek, said, “We are excited to take on any challenge really, so when we were offered this challenge as a family we thought it was a brilliant opportunity to spend more time together as a family in the outdoors, to see the country and to engage in an outdoor adventure.”

Ten year old Amy continued, “We are definitely up for the challenge and I think we can do it. There are a range of activities which we are really looking forward to”, while eight year old Ella is most looking forward to “Having a different experience, fun, and sleeping in the beds!”

Tony Hall, Director of Marketing for The Caravan Club, Says, “The Club has over a million members who caravan and motorhome, many of whom are families or grandparents with grandchildren. We hope that the Meek family can help inspire and encourage them to make the most of their holidays.”
