Camping and surfing: the perfect autumn trip

Take the plunge this autumn by incorporating two passions and embark on one epic autumn adventure

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘surfing’? Do you think of crystal-blue Hawaiian water, songs by The Beach Boys, and Keanu Reeves in Point Break?

When we’re stuck behind screens or distracted by the daily grind, it can be easy to forget that the UK is an island nation. A nation surrounded by beaches and waves! Some of the world’s best surfing talent comes from our chilly seas, homegrown right here on our (marine) doorstep.

But you don’t have to be a professional surfer to experience the thrill of catching a wave. In England, we’re lucky to have lots of beginner-friendly surf beaches and excellent surf schools up and down the country. If you’ve never set foot on a surfboard, or you’re a committed surfer but would like to take your skills to the next level, why not consider taking a surf lesson or two on your next camping or towing trip?

There are numerous compelling reasons to combine camping and surfing. It’s the perfect mix of cosiness and adventure, and spending time immersed in blue and green spaces can do wonders for the mental and physical well-being of children and adults alike.

When the summer crowds have left the beaches and the nights are beginning to get chillier, an autumn surf trip can be fun for the whole family. If you’re really lucky, you might score that perfect combination of late summer sunshine and early autumn waves!

Only a surfer knows the feeling – but together, the Caravan and Motorhome Club and Surfing England can help you find it.

Surfing England, the national governing body for surfing in England, has a network of accredited surf schools at beaches around England. Many Surfing-England accredited surf schools are located close to Caravan and Motorhome Club Sites, meaning you can easily combine camping and surfing for your trip, wherever you’re headed.

Instructors at Surfing England-accredited surf schools are highly trained, professional, and friendly, with one aim: to help you enjoy surfing. Surfing England-accredited surf schools offer a variety of group lessons and one-to-ones aimed at all different levels, suitable for total beginners right through to seasoned pros.

Children are always welcome, as long as they’re accompanied by an adult. If you fancy trying something different, many Surfing England-accredited surf schools also offer stand-up paddleboard (SUP) lessons and hire, as well as other activities such as coasteering and snorkelling.
